How To: Use Wikipedia in the Classroom Responsibly

How To: Use Wikipedia in the Classroom Responsibly | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it

The problem is that Wikipedia in the classroom has gotten a bad reputation in the K-12 world, undeservedly so I think. I would suggest that Wikipedia can be used for a multitude of educational purposes at a wide variety of grade levels. Too many teachers are still afraid to use it in class, so I’m here to right that wrong and show our educators how they can responsibly integrate Wikipedia into their lessons.

Be sure to check out Wikipedia’s own resources for teachers as well. They have an awesome 12-week syllabus showing you exactly how you can integrate Wikipedia into your classroom. They also have training designed especially for educators."

Many schools don't allow students to use Wikipedia for projects, but could they be teaching their students how to use Wikipedia effectively instead?

Ugh. I hate it when I do this. I accidentally scooped this article instead of rescooping yours. Thanks for sharing. Sometimes opening too many tabs causes bad habits for me.
Ness Crouch's curator insight, May 25, 2013 6:12 PM

Giving these types of skills to students can help them with their understanding of writing and also help teachers with avoiding the copy and paste syndrome in tasks.

Why we should all think about the gamification of education

Why we should all think about the gamification of education | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it
The educational system as we know it needs a revamp. Actually, a revamp is not enough. The educational system needs to be restructured. A lot of things need to change, and the sooner that happens, the better. Too many students drop out of school, and this isn’t the way to get successful... http://elearningfeeds.com/why-we-should-all-think-about-the-gamification-of-education/

These are the top 10 workforce skills students will need by 2020 | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it
Today’s workforce, as nearly everyone knows, is increasingly global. And with that global nature comes fierce competition–students will need an arsenal of workforce skills in order to stand out from their peers.

According to a recent McGraw-Hill Education survey, just 40 percent of college seniors said they felt their college experience was helpful in preparing for a career. Alarmingly, that percentage plummeted to 19 percent for women answering the same question.

That same survey also found that students in STEM majors were the most likely out of any group to report that they are optimistic about their career prospects (73 percent).

According to data from the nonprofit Institute for the Future, there are 6 drivers of change in today’s workforce:

The massive shifts technology and globalization are expected to wreak on the workplace have already begun. In many industries and countries, some of the most in-demand jobs didn’t even exist five or 10 years ago — and the pace of change will only accelerate.

We have always prepared children for jobs and work that did not exist. Tools are part of living day-to-day and have been from earlies times. What if focused on skills, problem solving, cooperating, and critical thinking through projects? What if we made less about the tools and more about the skills needed to choose and use existing tools?

MIT and Stanford researchers have developed a way to control gene expression in neurons when they become active, essentially providing a snapshot of their activity at a moment in time. Problem solving and critical thinking are essential skills in teaching and learning. Dewey's quote is right on. When we learn and teach, it is not as spectators. We are active participants performing in ways that respond to problems we are trying to solve and re-solve. David Bohm wrote that paradox is the way to think about what we call problems. As Parker Palmer puts it, there is a continuing tension in paradox.
