Whenever VRLA hits the L.A. Convention Center, it brings with it a wave of excitement and anticipation for the future of a nascent medium. Part trade show for virtual reality makers and part fan con for virtual reality users, this weekend's iteration had everything from virtual meditation to a mixed-reality Easter egg hunt. But off the expo floor, inside a small room on an upper level of the convention center, a group of teenage girls in matching T-shirts working on large, powerful computers may have been the most shining example of VR's bright future.


"As girls ourselves, we think it's super important that we're all playing with this fun world," says Georgia Van Cuylenburg, with a hint of an Australian accent in her enthusiastic voice. Van Cuylenberg is a founding member of Girls Make VR, a program formed through VRLA, which aims to train girls between the ages of 13 and 18 on how to create virtual reality. Girls Make VR launched at last summer's VRLA event and, so far, it has been a success. Van Cuylenberg notes that some of the students here had been a part of that inaugural workshop. This time around, there are a couple young boys in the class too, but really it's designed for female students.

Video games is something teachers fear to use because of their lack of awareness of the new technological tools being implemented around the world, this mostly happens with older teachers from the past generation who tend to be more traditional. But just imagine being able to teach your students through a game known worldwide: Minecraft, A great game which combines the art of storytelling, fine arts, music, video production, and appropriate player engagement to create an immersive, memorable experience of learning. It might be hard at first but after you get the hang of it, it becomes at easy as pie to incorporate the game into your classes.

Whether we like it or not, artificial intelligence, algorithms, advances in genetic engineering, nanotechnology and biology are already shaping our world at a pace we can scarcely comprehend. Rather than adding another ‘subject’, we should be looking at the whole purpose of education and asking whether our current systems are still fit for purpose.

For generations now we have viewed children as either tabula rasa, blank slates waiting to be filled with knowledge, or, as those who adhere to innatism maintain, minds brimming with knowledge from day one.

Both philosophies fed into the assembly line pedagogy, funneling talent into the narrow and restricted neck of an hourglass, to prepare them for world of work and leisure. What is increasingly evident, however, is that this approach is inadequate, even for those leaving school in the next decade.

LEAP (Listen - LEArn - Play) is a series of free opensource computer games specially designed for blind children.

Πριν ένα χρόνο μία μικρή ομάδα προγραμματιστών της ελληνικής μη κερδοσκοπικής εταιρείας SciFY.gr και επιστημόνων από το Τμήμα Τεχνών Ήχου και Εικόνας του Ιονίου Πανεπιστημίου ξεκινήσαμε να κυνηγάμε ένα όνειρο άπιαστο, για κάποιους: Να φτιάξουμε ηλεκτρονικά παιχνίδια ειδικά σχεδιασμένα για τυφλά παιδιά! Να τα μοιράσουμε σε ανοιχτό κώδικα (open source) ώστε να είναι επεκτάσιμα από οποιονδήποτε προγραμματιστή θέλει να τα βελτιώσει ! Να τα προσφέρουμε δωρεάν, σε δύο γλώσσες ελληνικά και αγγλικά, σε όλο τον κόσμο! Σήμερα, αισθανόμαστε ότι το "βότσαλο που ρίξαμε στη λίμνη" έχει αρχίσει να σηκώνει… κύματα στον τομέα των δωρεάν υποστηρικτικών τεχνολογιών για ανθρώπους με αναπηρία, στην Ελλάδα!
