5 Practical Learning Tips Based On How People Do--And Don't--Learn

5 Practical Learning Tips Based On How People Do--And Don't--Learn | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it

"There has been a large body of work in neuroscience, psychology, and related fields offering more and more insight into how we learn.

Below are five of the top tips from Barbara Oakley, Professor of Engineering at Oakland University, who has faced her own learning challenges (failing middle and high school math and science classes), and has made a study of the latest research on learning. She is also offering a free online course, Learning How to Learn, which starts August 1 on the Coursera platform with co-instructor, Prof. Terrence Sejnowski, a computational neuroscientist at UC San Diego and the Salk Institute."

Are you interested in learning how to learn? This post provides 5 tips that may help you.

1. Get enough sleep to de-toxify your brain

2. Outwit procrastination with the Pomodoro technique

3. Use spaced repetition to remember key facts

4. Use recall rather than re-reading to see whether you’ve learned the content

5. Vary learning/studying environment

Each of these is explained in more detail in the post.

As teachers we are also learners, and it is never too late to become better at learning. Sharing these five tips with our students may help them become better learners. And if this is a topic of interest to you, consider checking out the Coursera course Learning How to Learn that will begin on August 1st.

The use of mobile technology has increased, esp. in locations like Africa, and this is changing the way people learn. It is important to note that the mobile technology that is in used is often less "sophisticated and powerful than cell phones and have fewer features." Yet the tiny screen on the cell phone is a window to the world.

This post lists seven people/organizations from around the world who are making a difference.

It then goes on to look at what you can do with mobile learning to make a difference. There are 13 suggestions. Three are below.

* Encourage the use of apps that work on cell phones and basic phones alike.

* Create open, educational resources with a mobile, international  audience in mind.

* Spend more time explaining content than creating it.

Each of the suggestions above are described in more detail as are ten additional suggestions found in the post.

The recommendations for developing a “classroom culture grounded in metacognition” are great teaching insights and this serves as a powerful link to the research. The following excerpt is one nugget."Giving Students License to Identify Confusions within the Classroom Culture:  ask students what they find confusing, acknowledge the difficultiesIntegrating Reflection into Credited Course Work: integrate short reflection (oral or written) that ask students what they found challenging or what questions arose during an assignment/exam/projectMetacognitive Modeling by the Instructor for Students: model the thinking processes involved in your field and sought in your course by being explicit about “how you start, how you decide what to do first and then next, how you check your work, how you know when you are done” (p. 118)

To facilitate these activities, she also offers three useful tables:
