Great Review Games for the Classroom That Isn't 1:1 | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it

A comment that I frequently hear during or after my workshop on backchannels and informal assessment goes something like this, "I would love to do these things, but not all of my students have computers to use." Fortunately, there are some great review games that can be played in classrooms that only have a handful of web-enabled devices.l

Game-Based Learning: Is It the Future of Education?

Maria Angélica Morales Valencia's curator insight, September 21, 12:08 AM
Nowadays, games are very useful in teaching settings since it is very popular in children and adolescents population, “Specialists have discovered that game-based learning is the best experience not only for children but also for adults who need thrilling experiences to make learning easier” Teachers around the world, are trying to implement games in their teaching process as tools and new strategies to motivate and engage students in different subjects and topics. This new strategy is not only efficient, is funny and offer a lot of benefit to the learning process.
Sebastián Vásquez's curator insight, September 21, 9:51 PM
Game-based learning is a very powerful and engaging trend in terms of teaching. It has many different advantages such us varied ways of engaging students, learning while entertaining, raising motivation towards subject-matter content as well as providing an opportunity to understand things in different formats. Those are reasons why these types of teaching trends deserve a space into our classrooms. However, making of it the "future of education" would probably end up being the "torture of education" as it would make from diversity and riches of educational practices a total monotony by only having one way of doing things. This is a justification for the need of awareness about understanding the thin line between use and abuse.

Never Too Young To Code - School Library Journal | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it

Coding brings young children rich opportunities for language development and the “notion of learning from mistakes,” says Chip Donohue, the dean of distance learning and continuing education at the Erikson Institute in Chicago, a graduate school in child development. “We actually don’t do enough of that with young kids.” The sequencing and patterns involved in programming reinforce skills that have always been taught in the early years, but now also create “habits of mind that are essential for the 21st century,” adds Donohue, also senior fellow at the Fred Rogers Center, which provides resources and information on media use with young children. When children code together, they are also learning from each other.

App of the Week: Free science and math simulations for all ages

App of the Week: Free science and math simulations for all ages | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it
There’s no shortage of ways to use PhET simulations in (or out of) the classroom. Effectively, any time you’d use a static PowerPoint slide or textbook image to demonstrate a concept, it’s worth checking PhET to see if there’s an interactive version. Chances are high there is already one on the site. There are also virtual versions of common lab experiences, and it might be worth using the simulation if you’re short on class time or resources. Even if you have really great videos of experiments, the interactivity of these simulations will contribute so much to your lessons that it’s hard not to use both.
