Why we should all think about the gamification of education

Why we should all think about the gamification of education | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it
The educational system as we know it needs a revamp. Actually, a revamp is not enough. The educational system needs to be restructured. A lot of things need to change, and the sooner that happens, the better. Too many students drop out of school, and this isn’t the way to get successful... http://elearningfeeds.com/why-we-should-all-think-about-the-gamification-of-education/

Transcend the Classroom with Virtual Place-Based Learning

Transcend the Classroom with Virtual Place-Based Learning | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it
Simulation-based learning allows us to play in a highly immersive environment that reflects aspects of the real world. In virtual simulations, we can explore and create with much lower stakes than we would encounter in the real world. Questions of “What if?” flourish in a virtual simulation as we create and experience new possibilities with increasing realism. With smartphones making access to virtual reality easier and easier, virtual simulations can now become part of place-based learning in the classroom.

Robotics and Computer Science for Elementary Level Learners @JackieGerstein

Robotics and Computer Science for Elementary Level Learners @JackieGerstein | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it
I absolutely love all of the new robotics toys that have been coming out for elementary age learners.  I have been using them for my summer maker camp, with my gifted education classes, and for my upcoming Saturday morning program. One of my gifted girls noted, “Where do all of these robots come from?” I laughed and told her, “It’s actually has become one of my passions. Collecting them has become a major hobby of mine.”

I usually use them for an hour per week with my two groups of gifted learners.  I am an advocate of student-centric learning and giving them choices as to which instructional activities they would like to engage. For their robotics hour each week, I am giving them the following choices with their goal of using five of the robotics to complete five of the tasks provided.

Ng Lingshan's comment, Today, 5:42 AM
There is no doubt that technology has evolved and developed to the point where it has become so rampant and common in our daily lives, especially in our education of young children. Educational apps and games offered on electronic devices are often used as a means of educating children due to their appealing and interactive nature, as opposed to books. Because such apps are so effective in capturing children's attentions, parents view it as a convenient tool to get some time on their hands, leaving their child to play and learn on their own. However, as the article had clearly stated, this method is not effective in educating the child. As capable as it is, apps are not able to deliver the guidance that a parent would be able to offer. Parents should assist their young children in bridging the gap between the virtual and the reality as their small minds are still unable to perceive and apply what they have learned to practice. In the early stages of learning, it is better for parents to teach their child personally to minimise confusion and allow for effective learning. There is, after all, a big difference between how blocks, for example, work in the app and in reality. However, parents should still use technology to assist them in educating their child, in addition to real life interactions, so that the child can get the best of both worlds.
Xu Hui Jin's comment, Today, 10:27 PM
At this age of technologies, information of any kind is all simply one tap on your phone-screen away. With much easier access to all information all over the world, parents are now worried about what their children can find, with the help of internet. Sure, the Internet does have its benefits when it comes to entertainment and even learning, but I believe that children should still approach the ‘brave new world’ under supervision of adults. Adult should filter through the content their children are viewing so as to avoid any wrong concept or ideas to be implanted into capricious young minds. Children should also be encouraged to take part in more outdoor and social activities so as to develop their psychological well-being. However, the access to technology should not be fully banned from children, as they do have their rights to enjoy what this fast-moving world of sciences has for us.
Constance Tan's comment, Today, 10:30 PM
In modern days context, it is common to see almost everyone using electronics and technology on a daily basis. Therefore I will have to agree that there will be an increase in 2-3 year olds using iPads and other devices for educational purposes. However I do not encourage learning from such devices at this age as children should be exploring the outside world and learning through ones own experience at this point of time instead of watching it take place through a screen and to a fictional character. Hence I feel that parents who will still like to use applications to teach their children should definitely be by their child side at all times to guide their child along with the process of learning how to use the devices. This is to enable more effective learning and to also prevent the child from being overly addicted to them. Parents need to ensure that the child has a healthy balance of time spent experimenting in the real world and time spent simply learning from their iPads.

How virtual reality technology is changing the way students learn

How virtual reality technology is changing the way students learn | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it
For many years, schools and universities have had to change the way they work and teach in order to fit in with technology.

Software like PowerPoint, for example, which has long been used as an education tool, wasn’t designed for education. Nonetheless, it has been a staple tool in education settings, used as a way to present information in template, bite-size formats.

But this isn’t always a good thing.

The use of digital technologies sees some teachers and students presenting information using templates, which means much of the individual character of teachers’ practices can be lost.

Research shows that software such as PowerPoint can homogenise and sanitise the way teachers present information to their students.

Only more recently are we seeing technology being designed and utilised specifically for education contexts, and it’s changing the way students learn and understand things.

How To Use Brain Science To Be Your Best Self In 2017

How To Use Brain Science To Be Your Best Self In 2017 | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it

Resolutions are often an exercise in wishful thinking. People rarely keep them, mostly because they’re vague about their goals and don’t have a plan for following through. But that isn't the only thing that may weaken resolve or slow progress toward a goal. Failing to understand some practical brain science can just as quickly do you in.

Neuroscience has shown us this year that we may actually have everything we need to stay focused, be more creative, remember more, and make better decisions—just as long as we can work a bit more with our brains, not against them. Here are a few things we learned that can take you closer toward being your best self in 2017.

Degrees don’t matter anymore, skills do

Degrees don’t matter anymore, skills do | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it
More and more, employers are going to want to see some proof that a potential employee has actually gained particular skills. So certificates that can credibly attest to someone’s ability to write computer code, write a decent essay, use a spreadsheet, or give a persuasive speech are going to be worth more and more. And any training program that takes the need to maintain its own credibility seriously can help students gain those skills and certify them for employers in a way that bypasses the existing educational establishment.
