Why Games May Become the Education of the Future

Why Games May Become the Education of the Future | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it
Parents and teachers are often wary of letting kids spend time playing video games, and would rather they spend time playing outside or reading. But a number of game developers are introducing exciting mods of popular games like Minecraft and SimCity into the classroom and re-imagining how video games can support traditional educational objectives, like learning about ecology, math, and physics.…

Amy Radley's curator insight, October 16, 6:06 AM

It is imperative that we get kids excited to learn these days, and games may be one of the most effective ways to do it. Teachers are now keen to inspire children to take their learning home with them too - perhaps a math based game they have been playing in class is so fun that they want to continue playing at home? This extends their learning time to outside of school hours - and doesn't seem like a chore! Homework in the form of online quizzes and tasks which can be digitally marked instantly makes a better experience for kids and teachers! Less marking and instant gratification for students!

‘Gamification’ is dead, long live Games for Learning

‘Gamification’ is dead, long live Games for Learning | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it
The “gamification” concept goes something like this: Take an existing set of activities – say banking, or exercise, or rote schoolwork (the more mundane the better, apparently) – apply a set of “game rewards” in the form of points (or leveling, or badges), and as if by magic the world will become more fun, workers more efficient, and learning more effective.

As a game designer of more than twenty years, this idea rubbed me wrong. Like, really wrong.

Most people understand that wearing the right baseball glove will not magically allow them to throw pinpoint fastballs, and they get that listening to K-Pop will not suddenly teach them to speak Korean.

Yet as a game designer, it was painful to listen to the education world talk about gamification as if it was a special sauce that can be applied to any existing task in order to improve performance. As a practitioner of game design, I know that this special sauce just does not exist, especially when it comes to K-12 learning.

Celebrate diversity, be open, share, listen and learn...

Dr. Pat McGuire's curator insight, October 20, 11:41 AM

When my children were small we spent a great deal of time being creative and playing the "what if" game to test out theories. That is not seen with children in my practice much anymore.  They are stuck in overly compartmentalized learning and playing.  Few of them know what to do if told to go outside.

We need to bring curiosity and creativity back into the forefront of child development and learning.  I see the loss of this as being as devastating as when children were told "Do it because I said so and don't ask questions."

What do you think?

Howard Gardner, creator of ‘multiple intelligences’ theory, launches new project on ‘good’ education

Howard Gardner, creator of ‘multiple intelligences’ theory, launches new project on ‘good’ education | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it
Armed with a set of criteria drawn from different disciplines, I identified seven separate intelligences. All human beings possess these seven intelligences, but we differ from one another in which are strong; and in any case, strength or weakness in one (say spatial intelligence) does not predict strength or weakness in another (say, interpersonal or musical intelligence).

I would now add a few more intelligences to the list, and others, most famously Daniel Goleman, have proposed yet other intelligences like emotional intelligence. I am no longer invested in my particular set of intelligences. For me, the important advance is that a multiplicity of intelligences has been acknowledged—wits, rather than wit.

In this era of succinct messaging, I’ve created a twitter-short formula: Multiple Wits and Good Grits Lead to a Success Beyond Selfies.
