Truckin' along.............

Truckin' along............. | Different people different lives | Scoop.it

Tim loves driving trucks.  He has been driving semi's since he turned 21 and has recently purchased a B-Double which is his pride and joy.  But to keep the wheels turning on his pride and joy, he needs to keep up the maintenance in which he uses a service pit.  All of the tools he uses for maintenance is kept in his truck (in case he breaks down while out on a job) and brings these same tools out and keeps beside him when servicing at home.

Ingrid Baldwin's insight:

The service pit is very slippery and greasy due to there being no 'run off' hole.  The access ladder into the pit is extremely steep and Tim needs to hold on with both hands.  Sometimes the angle he has to work on (such as in the photo) causes neck and shoulder pain, so he does this particular job in short bursts, with breaks in between.

The hidden safety issues of hairdressing

The hidden safety issues of hairdressing | Different people different lives | Scoop.it

Stacey has her own salon and has been hairdressing for 15 years now.  She juggles her career with 2 primary school children and a husband that also owns his own business.  She has one full time hairdresser as well as Cassie (background), who is doing a school-based apprenticeship.  It is always very busy in the salon with clients getting their hair done, clients waiting and people coming off the streets to buy her products - she needs to keep her eye on everything.

Ingrid Baldwin's insight:

Stacey has just remodelled her shop and it was very important for her to think about the health and safety aspects while doing this.  On non-slip floor was first on the list.  Next on her list was posture stools for her and her staff.  Sitting on an ordinary stool while cutting hair all day gave Stacey neck and back pain - the posture stool helps to alleviate this.  Ammonia in the hair perming solution and colours are a cause of concern for Stacey, mainly because she doesn't smell it anymore.  She doesn't wear a mask, but stated that she will bring it up with her staff in the next meeting.

IT'S HARD BEING A KID..............!!

IT'S HARD BEING A KID..............!! | Different people different lives | Scoop.it

Zac has been involved in many sports during his 13 years, but golf is his favourite!

Swimming, soccer, athletics and tennis are the sports he has participated in until a few months ago.  He has given them all up for the love of golf!  Recently the local golf club received a grant for professionals to come and give free invaluable lessons to the children which Zac enjoyed immensely.

Ingrid Baldwin's insight:

Ingrid’s insights……………………………..

As a person who has no interest in golf and assumed it was just hitting a ball and walking, there are many health and safety issues to deal with.  The sun is the most challenging for Zac as he concentrates on golf he often forgets to reapply suncream and to keep himself hydrated.  His hands are always forgotten and at the end of a game of golf the back of his hands are sunburnt.

Health and safety in sport

Health and safety in sport | Different people different lives | Scoop.it

Toni-Ann has just finished her first sprint triathlon - which is a 750m swim, 20km bike ride and 5km run.  She has been training for this for the past 8 months and is very proud to finally complete one.  She also managers the local pool and all the learn to swim classes.  Fitness has come later to her in life and she is quickly becoming very aware of not only the health and safety issues of her chosen sport, but also the impact of training on her body and how important it is to fuel your body properly to maintain her training, but also aiding her recovery.

Ingrid Baldwin's insight:

The difference of eating junk and fatty foods as opposed to eating lots of fruits and vegetables is huge when it comes to exercise.  Toni-Ann explained that when her diet goes 'of the wagon', she cannot train as long as she usually does and does not recover well.  She has fallen off her bike 3 times in the past 8 months, and every single time she has blamed fatigue.

Toni-Ann lives in a small country town where the roads are very narrow.  Trucks and cars are a major safety concern for her, but hopefully the drivers are aware of the new laws where they need to be 1.5m away from the rider when passing.

BIG BOYS TOYS............

BIG BOYS TOYS............ | Different people different lives | Scoop.it

Brad has been driving all sorts of machinery for over 20 years.  Not only the loader, but also the excavator, backhoe, grader, semi trucks, body trucks, B-Doubles and also operating and working crushers.  All this can be dangerous work if appropriate checks are not put into place

Ingrid Baldwin's insight:

While operating the loader it is imperative that the operator is aware of any other people or objects in the area.  There are been near misses in the quarry that Brad owns where the driver has become complacent and could have caused extensive damage to other machinery nearby.  The operator in this photo is using the loader to flatten scalp for a house pad.  He needed to be aware of the trucks that were delivering the scalp, and also the roller nearby that was rolling the pad after the loader.  Constant communication via a radio is what Brad expects of his workers.
