Campaign-Finance Reform Has to Be Cross-Partisan

Campaign-Finance Reform Has to Be Cross-Partisan | DidYouCheckFirst | Scoop.it
Democrats love to talk about cutting the influence of money in politics, but are they actually any more eager to fix it than Republicans?
Greg Russak's insight:

The single central flaw in American democracy today is not the speech within elections—not how much or how nasty or by whom. The single central flaw is the fundraising. America has outsourced the funding of campaigns to the tiniest fraction of the 1 percent. That tiny fraction then leverages its power to enormous effect. It turns otherwise conservative Republicans into “crony capitalists”—the tag David Brat successfully attached to Eric Cantor. It turns otherwise progressive Democrats into the “tools of Wall Street”—think Clinton-led deregulation in the 1990s. Bending goes both ways, pushing the principles on both the right and left off the table. The reality of the need to fundraise is the reality of everything in D.C. And thus it is no surprise that the largest empirical study of policy decisions ever in the history of political science finds a government responsive to the wants of the “economic elite” and “business interests,” but finds “average citizens ... have little or no independent influence.”

Political spending can only be limited if it gives rise to corruption or the appearance thereof. Which raises the question, what does corruption look like?
Greg Russak's insight:

Money corrupts our government and that corrupts everything else - the environment, the economy, our health, and our freedoms.

TOP PICKS
Greg Russak's insight:

Target gets no more of my money until they come out against open carry. It's that simple.

Am I the only one who thinks open carry is actually a mental health issue?

Look. If someone thinks the only way they can feel safe outside their home is by carrying a fully loaded semi-automatic rifle - or any firearm, for that matter - then they need mental health services. Come on. No one should have to go through life with that much irrational fear and anxiety. Isn't it our duty and obligation as their friend, family member, or neighbor to help them to get the help they need?

Here's how you can help. Make sure they know the good news.

Mental health services are among the Essential Health Benefits covered by law now thanks to.................wait for it................. the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, often fondly referred to as Obamacare.

New legislation targeting members of Congress would do just that.

I'm all for a lifetime ban on lawmakers becoming lobbyists.

Oregon's Governor Seeks Legal Action in Oracle Website Failure

Oregon's Governor Seeks Legal Action in Oracle Website Failure | DidYouCheckFirst | Scoop.it
Will seek to recoup the state s payments to Oracle plus damages, citing bugs in the system and missed deadlines.
Greg Russak's insight:

Projects of this size are extremely complex. It's unlikely the fault lies exclusively with any single party. Still, it seems pretty clear that whatever the causes and reasons, Oracle failed to deliver. Technology services contracts that I've been involved in over the years lead me to believe that Oracle owes Oregon a refund of a pretty big chunk of the fees paid to them.

Beating the odds: Why one bill made it through a gridlocked Congress — and so many don't

Beating the odds: Why one bill made it through a gridlocked Congress — and so many don't | DidYouCheckFirst | Scoop.it

Here's what Schoolhouse Rock left out.

by Andrew Prokop on May 22, 2014

Tousands of bills are introduced during each Congress. Vanishingly few of them end up becoming law — fewer each year, as Congressional gridlock anddysfunction worsen. Out of 7,207 bills and joint resolutions introduced during this Congress, only 103 have become law — fewer, by this point, than in any other Congress since at least the 1970s.

Poor governance and a reliance on contractors who were good at procurement but not as strong in technology were two of the many factors that contributed to the botched rollout of Healthcare.gov and the ongoing issues in many states.
Greg Russak's insight:

A speculative question that I haven't heard asked or debated yet is, "How might these projects have gone if NO outside contractors were used and ONLY government workers were assigned and managed to implement these systems?"

Now before you lambaste government employees as somehow inferior or incapable of large technology projects, I have one word for you.

Reform.to

Greg Russak's insight:

Reform.to tracks members of Congress as well as candidates for Congress, and highlights their support for specific legislation that would effect fundamental reform of the corrupting influence of money in politics.

By "support" we mean that they have either co-sponsored specific legislation, or, they have pledged to us to co-sponsor specific legislation.

If a Member or candidate supports any of these reforms in this sense, we mark their profile with the AC tag. "AC" means they are working "Against Corruption."

If Member or candidate has not indicated support for these reforms in this sense, we mark their profile with a DC tag. "DC" means business as usual.

Energy and Natural Resources: Industry Influence in the Climate Change Debate | OpenSecrets | DidYouCheckFirst | Scoop.it
Presenting political news, and the actual political positions of the parties and candidates, as well as disclosing how much campaign money they have raised and where it came from.
Greg Russak's insight:

Outside of Congress, on June 2, 2014, the Environmental Protection Agency announced a proposed rule aimed at decreasing carbon pollution from power plants by 30 percent over 2005 levels by 2030. Aimed mainly at shrinking pollution from coal-fired power plants, the rule would assign each state a target reduction level, but also gives states a range of options to use to achieve their targets. The proposal must go through a public comment period, and immediately drew protests from industry, from Republicans and from Democrats in states that depend heavily on coal-generated electricity.

As the EPA proposal moves forward and energy and climate change legislation is discussed in Congress, this page will summarize the money in politics aspect of the debate.

Obamacare Weighing Less on Hiring Plans

Obamacare Weighing Less on Hiring Plans | DidYouCheckFirst | Scoop.it
The effects of the Affordable Care Act may be weighing less heavily on the hiring plans of U.S. privately held companies this year, according to a survey of accountants who work with small businesses.
Greg Russak's insight:

“Private companies in the United States are continuing to grow at a healthy rate, and while planning for the Affordable Care Act is still impacting many businesses’ plans for hiring, it is causing significantly fewer businesses to slow hiring in the coming year in comparison to last year, which is positive," said Sageworks chairman Brian Hamilton in a statement.
