Ready for Ben Carson? Not for president. | DidYouCheckFirst | Scoop.it
The nation very well might need strong medicine, but the famed neurosurgeon and conservative heartthrob is not the one to administer it.
Greg Russak's insight:

We're not all cut out to be leaders. Looks like we can add Carson to that list.

"Last April, Carson linked gays to pedophiles and “people who believe in bestiality.” His“That’s not an orange. …That’s a banana’ attempt to explain himself a few days later stretched the limits of ridiculousness. And what he said about Obamacare at the Values Voters Summit last October rendered him unworthy of high office. “You know, Obamacare is really, I think, the worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery,” Carson said."

Today is the 4th anniversary of the Supreme Court's infamous "Citizens United" decision. Why should you care? Watch the 2 1/2 minute video at... ... to get a sense of what money in politics is doing...

Greg Russak's insight:

It all boils down to money, and unless and until we – you and I and everyone we know – does something – ANYTHING – to get money out of politics while we get out and vote in every election, well then we shouldn’t expect much to change for the better.

We can do this. You can do this. Why not do it right now?

TPPA Environment Chapter & Chair's Commentary Posted by WikiLeaks Issues for NZ

TPPA Environment Chapter & Chair's Commentary Posted by WikiLeaks Issues for NZ | DidYouCheckFirst | Scoop.it
Greg Russak's insight:

"The Environment Chapter addresses matters of conservation, environment, biodiversity, indigenous knowledge and resources, over-fishing and illegal logging, and climate change, among others. It might be expected to provide balance to the commercial interests being advanced in the other chapters, and genuine protections that are consistent with international environmental law.

Instead of a 21st century standard of protection, the leaked text shows that the obligations are weak and compliance with them is unenforceable. Contrast that to other chapters that subordinate the environment, natural resources and indigenous rights to commercial objectives and business interests. The corporate agenda wins both ways."

Leaked TPP 'Environment Chapter' Shows 'Corporate Agenda Wins'

Leaked TPP 'Environment Chapter' Shows 'Corporate Agenda Wins' | DidYouCheckFirst | Scoop.it
US called main 'outlier' when it comes to strong protections; Leak comes as Obama tries to ram trade deal through Congress
Greg Russak's insight:

"On 9 January 2014 a Bill seeking fast track authority was presented to the Congress. The controversial fast track process requires the Congress to accept or reject the deal as a whole and imposes a strict time limit on debate. The numbers were already stacking up against the Bill, with Democrats especially critical of the erosion of their powers and the secrecy of the negotiations, as well as the reported content. This leaked environment chapter will further erode support among Democratic members of the House of Representatives who are up for re-election later this year. Obama is going to have to rely heavily on unfriendly Republicans."

Consider the above carefully. The Democrats are refusing to kowtow to the president.

Now consider what would be happening had Romney won, and ask yourself which party behaves more - even as poorly as it does - in the interest of American citizens over corporations.

Make no mistake. Both parties are corrupt, but NOT in equal measure. Remember that in November and resist any temptation you may have to vote against your own economic, social, and legislative self-interests.

Chomsky Describes US Domestic Policy in Two Words: 'Pure Savagery' | DidYouCheckFirst | Scoop.it

"The refusal to provide very minimal living standards to people who are caught in this monstrosity — that's just pure savagery," Chomsky said during an interview with HuffPost Live. "There's no other word for it."

Greg Russak's insight:

The negotiation, expected to wrap up by next week, arrives two months after U.S. lawmakers allowed a separate stimulus boost to SNAP to expire, cutting a universal $5 billion in funding that gouged food assistance for 47 million food stamp recipients, 49 percent of whom are children.

49% of 47million is 23 million.

Say what you will and believe what you want about the adults, but how do we collectively look ourselves in the mirror while food is taken away from 23 million children?

This article, Gun flight: Smith & Wesson, Ruger quit California over stamping requirement, by Perry Chiaramonte is a classic example of the complete bias and total lack of journalistic integrity that is the hallmark and the brand of Fox News.
Greg Russak's insight:

It doesn’t seem possible, but Fox News seems to be getting progressively lazier and more lackadaisical than was even imaginable. Even worse, it seems perfectly clear that they believe their audience won’t notice.

That said, it’s actually more likely that Fox is simply pandering to an audience who consciously selects them and embraces them precisely for their incredibly biased and yellow journalism; the same type of journalism so obviously on display in Mr. Chiaramonte’s article.

FEC votes on partisan lines not to punish Karl Rove's Super-PAC for violations of law during 2010 election

FEC votes on partisan lines not to punish Karl Rove's Super-PAC for violations of law during 2010 election | DidYouCheckFirst | Scoop.it

by THOMAS CATAN, Wall S. Journal

Campaign-finance activists vowed to take the Federal Election Commission to court Thursday after it disregarded a finding by its staff that Crossroads GPS, conservative nonprofit backed by Karl Rove, likely broke campaign laws during the 2010 elections.

On Friday, the FEC quietly released a legal opinion by its staff lawyers that found that the “major purpose” of Crossroads GPS was to elect federal candidates, despite being registered as a “social-welfare” nonprofit group. The FEC’s general counsel recommended holding a formal investigation into the group.

However, the FEC decided not to take any action after a deadlocked 3-3 vote by its commissioners along party lines. On Thursday, that decision drew sharp criticism from campaign-finance activists.

“The rationale of the Republican bloc of commissioners is tortured and obstructionist,” said Craig Holman of Public Citizen, one of the groups that brought the original complaint. The groups said in a statement they plan a new suit that will argue the FEC’s dismissal of the case “was arbitrary, capricious, an abuse of discretion and contrary to the law.”

Crossroads GPS declined to comment on the FEC staff findings or the latest threat by campaigners to sue the election regulator. But it repeated earlier denials that it’s a political committee or mainly engaged in electioneering.

“I’m pleased that the Commission decided that GPS is not a political committee, and now we can move on from this politically-motivated complaint,” Tom Josefiak, general counsel to Crossroads GPS, said in an emailed statement.

If the FEC had decided to act on it and forced the group to register as a political committee, it might have had to disclose the identities of anonymous donors that contributed hundreds of millions of dollars to the Republican group.

Crossroads GPS “has spent nearly $100 million on election ads since 2010 without disclosing its donors,” said Paul Ryan, Senior Counsel at the Campaign Legal Center, which will also join the lawsuit against the FEC. “A ruling by the FEC that Crossroads GPS is a political committee would result in this disclosure for past and future elections.”

Social-welfare groups, known in the tax code as 501(c)(4) groups, aren’t supposed to make electioneering their primary activity.

But their use in campaigns has soared in the last two years, in part because they can accept donations of unlimited size and don’t have to disclose the names of their donors. [MORE]

The Disenchantment Of American Politics (And The Coming Uproar ... | DidYouCheckFirst | Scoop.it
If party politics are weak, muddled, and contradictory, the divisions between Americans are starkly clear: wealth in America has never been so unevenly distributed — the fabled one percent versus everyone else.
Greg Russak's insight:

Hard to argue against anything I read in this blog post. This is a telling passage.

"There will probably always be some alignment of Left and Right in politics, but from time to time the packages they come in and the ideologies they contain are in desperate need of either rehabilitation or dissolution. I’d bet that we may soon see the demise of both the Democratic and Republican parties as they are currently structured. They’ve been around an awful long time now, and their presence probably provides a certain reassuring familiarity, but that is also the same growth medium as contempt. The useless and tiresome public quarrels they spawn these days, the kabuki theater debt ceiling showdowns, the can-kickings, and other evasions of responsibility, erode basic institutional trust to a dangerous degree; the people lose faith in the courts, the news media, the banks, the value of their money, and eventually all authority.
