The Four Biggest Right-Wing Lies About Inequality

The Four Biggest Right-Wing Lies About Inequality | DidYouCheckFirst | Scoop.it

Published on Monday, May 5, 2014 by RobertReich.org

by Robert Reich

Even though French economist Thomas Piketty has made an air-tight case that we’re heading toward levels of inequality not seen since the days of the nineteenth-century robber barons, right-wing conservatives haven’t stopped lying about what’s happening and what to do about it.

Herewith, the four biggest right-wing lies about inequality, followed by the truth.

Greg Russak's insight:

Lie number one: The rich and CEOs are America’s job creators.

Lie number two: People are paid what they’re worth in the market.

Lie number three: Anyone can make it in America with enough guts, gumption, and intelligence.

Lie number four: Increasing the minimum wage will result in fewer jobs.

Deal Reached on Fast-Track Authority for Obama on Trade Accord

Deal Reached on Fast-Track Authority for Obama on Trade Accord | DidYouCheckFirst | Scoop.it
Congressional leaders agreed on legislation to give President Obama authority to finish negotiating one of the world’s largest trade accords, starting a battle that aligns the president with Republicans.
Greg Russak's insight:

Headlines can be so misleading. Come in off the ledge.

There's no "deal reached." The only "deal" is Wyden's sellout in the Senate Finance Committee, along with the invitation to let Ayn Ryan sit in.

There's a long way to go yet on Fast Track. It should make for good political theater, and it's bound to only get better as soon as conservatives and armchair Republicans start paying attention. just wait until they figure out the the GOP in the House and Senate are jumping into bed with the president. It would really frost their asses if they actually paid attention to what is already known about the TPP.

At any rate, according to GovTrack, S.995 has only a 35% chance of even getting past committee.

Coming to Terms With the American Empire

Coming to Terms With the American Empire | DidYouCheckFirst | Scoop.it
Although the United States became an empire unintentionally, it must learn to act like one.
Greg Russak's insight:

"It is true that the United States did not genuinely intend to be an empire. It is also true that its intentions do not matter one way or another. Circumstance, history and geopolitics have created an entity that, if it isn't an empire, certainly looks like one. Empires can be far from oppressive. The Persians were quite liberal in their outlook. The American ideology and the American reality are not inherently incompatible. But two things must be faced: First, the United States cannot give away the power it has. There is no practical way to do that. Second, given the vastness of that power, it will be involved in conflicts whether it wants to or not. Empires are frequently feared, sometimes respected, but never loved by the rest of the world. And pretending that you aren't an empire does not fool anyone."

Political Smears in U.S. Never Change: the NYT's 1967 Attack on MLK's Anti-War Speech - The Intercept | DidYouCheckFirst | Scoop.it
Nixon officials smeared Ellsberg as a Russian agent, while The New York Times attacked King for "slandering" the U.S. and "whitewashing" Hanoi's crimes. All of that should sound familiar.
Greg Russak's insight:
"I defy anyone to listen to any Democratic apparatchik insinuate that Snowden is a Russian agent and identify any differences with how Nixon apparatchiks smeared Ellsberg (or, for that matter, how today’s warnings from Obama officials about the grave harm coming from leaks differ from the warnings issued by Bush and Nixon officials). The script for smearing never changes — it stays constant over five decades and through the establishments of both parties — and it’s one of the reasons Ellsberg so closely identifies with Snowden and has become one of his most vocal defenders."

Seattle City Council Unanimously Opposes Fast-Track for the Trans-Pacific Partnership

Seattle City Council Unanimously Opposes Fast-Track for the Trans-Pacific Partnership | DidYouCheckFirst | Scoop.it
The Seattle city council just unanimously passed a resolution that comprises some of the strongest statements about the Trans-Pacific Partnership—and its twin proposal to speed the deal through Congress—a local governmental body has made. The TPP, a giant, hardly-transparent international trade deal currently being negotiated by the federal government, has inspired loud opposition from environmental and labor groups. Despite what little we know about the deal, it would appear that all nine council members are...

I honestly can't believe there isn't 100% outrage about what Gov Pence and the Indiana legislation has done.

Has the right-wing in this country finally and completely abandoned its last shreds of humanity?

A Christian Nation? Since When?

A Christian Nation? Since When? | DidYouCheckFirst | Scoop.it

Big business promoted “Christian libertarianism.”

Greg Russak's insight:

Keep this one handy for the next time someone claims that we're a Christian nation and always have been. It will also be useful in helping your libertarian friends and family to understand a bit more of that movement's history; i.e., how they are actually in many ways the spawn of an ugly marriage between corporatists who were losing the public relations battle with progressives and religious leaders like Pat Robertson who gladly became their toadies by cherry-picking the Bible in order to justify greed, corruption, and the treatment of other human beings as disposal assets. You know. Objectivism.

#FightFastTrack: Coalition Takes Aim at Lawmakers over Corporate-Friendly 'Trade' Agreement | DidYouCheckFirst | Scoop.it
Environmental, labor, and community groups are organizing rallies, public forums, and creative direct actions this week urging their congressional representatives to say "no" to a renewed bid to rush through the controversial Trans-Pacific Partnership "trade" deal by passing "fast track" legislation.
Greg Russak's insight:

"Senate Finance Committe Chair Orrin Hatch (R-UT) is saying he wants to reintroduce Fast Track legislation for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) this month — right after Members of Congress return from the Presidents Day recess," explains Citizens Trade Campaign, referring to legislation that would allow the Obama administration to avoid transparency and full congressional review of the deal. Greg Russak's insight:
Congress is about to introduce a bill to fast track a secret deal that could lead to global censorship. It’s called the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). We think Internet users everywhere should have a say in decisions that affect the Internet — but if “Fast Track” legislation passes, there is no chance that the public will see the text before the deal is approved. Join the Internet Vote on April 23rd and let’s make it clear to DC how we’re voting: against Fast Track and against Internet censorship.

Greg Palast | Investigative Reporter "From White Sheets to Spreadsheets" | DidYouCheckFirst | Scoop.it

The struggle for civil and human rights did not begin 50 years ago, and it will not end in another 50. It is a centuries-long story of advance and retreat.

And that’s the lesson. The movie’s over, but not The Movement. It is left to us to march over the bridge again. And again. And again.
