The Gun Lobby’s Dumbest Argument

The Gun Lobby’s Dumbest Argument | DidYouCheckFirst | Scoop.it
Do we expect that anti-pollution laws will end all pollution? Of course not. And neither, argues Michael Tomasky, should we expect that gun laws will prevent all violence. This absurd argument shouldn’t be taken seriously.
Greg Russak's insight:

"...no one thinks laws against pollution will prevent all pollution. Similarly, no one supposes that laws against armed robbery will prevent all armed robbery. No one expects that laws against tax evasion will stop the selfish and the stingy from hiring their selfish and stingy lawyers to identify for them various selfish and stingy new ways around the laws. We do not presume man’s perfectibility. And yet somehow, gun laws are supposed to meet the standard of being able to prevent all future massacres and are criticized as total failures if they don’t? Absurd." - Michael Tomasky, Newsweek/Daily Beast special correspondent and editor of Democracy: A Journal of Ideas.

Jeb Bush: It's 'Arrogant' To Say Science Is Decided On Climate Change

Jeb Bush: It's 'Arrogant' To Say Science Is Decided On Climate Change | DidYouCheckFirst | Scoop.it
Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) said Wednesday that it's "really arrogant" for people to say there's a scientific consensus on man-made climate change.
Greg Russak's insight:

Assuming he's not as stupid as his statements imply, I'm left to conclude it's an abhorrent and disgraceful political strategy meant to pander to Big Money, the Fox News propaganda machine, and the Evangelical science deniers on the extreme right who make up the reliable voting blocks in GOP primaries.

FIGHT WALL STREET'S ATTACK ON DODD-FRANK!

Wall Street's at it again.

They're hoping you've forgotten how they crashed the global economy in 2009, and are setting the cronies they fund in Congress to dismantle the protections in the Dodd-Frank financial reform bill.

Sign this petition: tell Congress we need stronger rules keeping the big banks in check, not carveouts and giveaways to let them run wild.

Deal Reached on Fast-Track Authority for Obama on Trade Accord

Deal Reached on Fast-Track Authority for Obama on Trade Accord | DidYouCheckFirst | Scoop.it
Congressional leaders agreed on legislation to give President Obama authority to finish negotiating one of the world’s largest trade accords, starting a battle that aligns the president with Republicans.
Greg Russak's insight:

Headlines can be so misleading. Come in off the ledge.

There's no "deal reached." The only "deal" is Wyden's sellout in the Senate Finance Committee, along with the invitation to let Ayn Ryan sit in.

There's a long way to go yet on Fast Track. It should make for good political theater, and it's bound to only get better as soon as conservatives and armchair Republicans start paying attention. just wait until they figure out the the GOP in the House and Senate are jumping into bed with the president. It would really frost their asses if they actually paid attention to what is already known about the TPP.

At any rate, according to GovTrack, S.995 has only a 35% chance of even getting past committee.

A trade pact might change local land use decisions in a big way

A trade pact might change local land use decisions in a big way | DidYouCheckFirst | Scoop.it
A key principle of land use in the United States is that homeowners can often veto new buildings on nearby land that other people own. A trade agreement that's currently in the works could have a huge impact on that long-established system of local control.
Greg Russak's insight:

"The cure for these ills is more democracy, not less. Land use regulators should answer to the entire electorate, not to small groups of influential landowners and not to unaccountable tribunals that put the interests of big money ahead of the common good."

What a Rand Paul World Would Look Like: 6 Things You Should Know About the War-Mongering, Faux Libertarian

What a Rand Paul World Would Look Like: 6 Things You Should Know About the War-Mongering, Faux Libertarian | DidYouCheckFirst | Scoop.it
Many young people and progressives who are wary of a Clinton presidency are seeking potential alternatives, even outside the Democratic Party. Unfortunately, much of the attention of voters seeking an alternative to mainstream candidates of both parties has focused on Rand Paul. This is no accident: Rand Paul has carefully positioned himself as "the most interesting man in Washington" for supposedly being a different kind of Republican, hip and able to connect with younger voters. Paul has made it his mission to bring more of the increasingly progressive youth vote back to the GOP fold, and polling shows that Paul does have greater support among younger voters than older ones. Paul has also mounted the most aggressive social media campaign of the GOP hopefuls for president, again partly in an effort to reach younger voters.

But Paul's delicately crafted maverick image is far from the reality. Here are six things younger and more progressive voters need to know about Rand Paul.

Via Jocelyn Stoller
Greg Russak's insight:

It's especially important that young voters read this article.

You can read more about who Rand Paul really is at: post:https://didyoucheckfirst.wordpress.com/2014/03/23/young-and-old-people-do-not-be-fooled-by-rand-paul/

....and who Libertarians really are at https://didyoucheckfirst.wordpress.com/2014/11/15/the-dirty-little-secret-of-libertarianism-theyre-really-corporatists/

Then, in November, do the patriotic and sensible thing and vote.
