How to Prepare for the PhD Defense

How to Prepare for the PhD Defense | Didactics and Technology in Education | Scoop.it

The preparation for the PhD Defense was just one step in the long road to the defense, that started with the first draft, then dealt extensively with the committee members, and ended with the celebration of getting my degree (I got the diploma in my hands right after my defense). PhD: the extreme fieldwork edition

PhD: the extreme fieldwork edition | Didactics and Technology in Education | Scoop.it

This post was written by Linda Murray who recently submitted her PhD on Maternal Mental Health in Central Vietnam through Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane. Her thesis was completed on nine desks, in four cities and two countries. She now lives in Hobart, Tasmania and works part-time at the University of Tasmania teaching Global Health. This post details how she broke the PhD ‘rules’ – and lived! (...) - The Thesis Whisperer, April 21, 2013

The Changing PhD – Turning out millions of doctorates

The Changing PhD – Turning out millions of doctorates | Didactics and Technology in Education | Scoop.it

As more and more universities around the world graduate ever-increasing numbers of students with PhDs, governments are beginning to ask if it is time to slow the production line. A new study notes that China is the world leader in producing PhDs, having outnumbered the United States on a per year basis for the first time in 2008.

By then, the Asian giant had awarded more than 240,000 doctorates over only the previous 30 years after its PhD programmes were stopped during the Cultural Revolution. These did not restart until 1978 when a mere 18 students were undertaking doctorates – but since then PhD enrolment has expanded by 24% a year. Writing a Thesis is Like Weaving on a Loom

Writing a Thesis is Like Weaving on a Loom | Didactics and Technology in Education | Scoop.it

This is a guest post from Rod Pitcher, a PhD student in Education at The Centre for Higher Education, Learning and Teaching at the Australian National University, Canberra, Australia. The focus of his study is the metaphors that doctoral students use when describing their research and other matters related to their studies. In this post he shares a particularly useful metaphor… - By Ingermewburn in The Thesis Whisperer, July 31, 2012

Anatomy of a Disastrous PhD Experience

Anatomy of a Disastrous PhD Experience | Didactics and Technology in Education | Scoop.it

In the comments of my last post, it was asked how it was that I managed to be “shunned” by my program during my PhD. I have held off addressing the subject because, despite the fact that my experience within the politics and dynamics of my particular program were toxic and destructive, I love and appreciate all that the institution itself did for me. I also didn’t want to burn any more bridges than I already had, but seeing as how one of the key players in the entire saga was revealed to have been working at two different institutions at the same time without either knowing, well, I really don’t think I can make things worse by writing here about my experiences. Who will hire all the PhDs? Not Canada’s universities

Who will hire all the PhDs? Not Canada’s universities | Didactics and Technology in Education | Scoop.it

A persistent theme in current discussions about graduate education and its outcomes is the question of whether Canada is “producing too many PhDs.” While enrollments (and numbers of PhD graduates) have increased with the encouragement of policy, more of these grads now struggle to find employment that matches the level and nature of their education – particularly employment in universities, as tenure-track faculty. The situation in Canada is not as dire as in the States where just this week it was reported that three quarters of faculty work as adjuncts, but accounts of under-employed PhDs working as waiters and cab drivers have become more common.

Turning the Dissertation into a Book

Turning the Dissertation into a Book | Didactics and Technology in Education | Scoop.it

At the most recent conference of the Association for Slavic, Eastern European and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES), held last November, representatives from several academic presses and scholars who had recently published monographs based on their dissertations held a roundtable dedicated to giving current grad students tips on what they should prepare for if they intend on turning their dissertation into a book.
