Diaspora philanthropy has changed the landscape of foreign aid surpassing official development assistance long ago. The literature to date has treated Diaspora philanthropy as a uniformly positive developmental actor. Changing rates and patterns of migration, and the related growth of remittances have bolstered the belief that the emerging role of Diasporas in national development is crucial. I am interested in learning the real impact of Diaspora philanthropy
Diaspora philanthropy represents charitable giving from individuals who reside outside their homeland, maintain a sense of identity with their home country, give to causes or organizations in that country, and give for public benefit . Diaspora philanthropy is part of a larger phenomenon of financial remittances, and is often accompanied by the transfer of ‘social remittances, defined as the ideas, practices, identities, and social capital that are transmitted through the migration circuit. To understand the impact of Diaspora philanthropy requires better understanding of social capital.
