Ask tons of questions, especially at the start

Ask tons of questions, especially at the start | Dialogue | Scoop.it

“They do not provide answers, they ask questions." Experts on how to think about your career give tips on starting with a blank page and questionnaire. This is about the setup of thinking about a problem, before actually strarting to *do* things. That's exactly what we like to focus on here at Orangutan Swing: preparing for brilliant outcomes by staging great upfront dialogue. Stuff like that and other insights in this article by Harvey Scachter in the Globe and Mail.

Orangutan Swing's insight:

"[Design Kompany] got a solicitation to apply to work with the Convention and Visitors Bureau. Design Kompany was too small for the job the bureau had in mind, Morita said, but the invitation started him thinking about how he would go about “branding” a community.

“I have a small problem with the way they try and promote a city and community with that same mindset that is used to promote a detergent,” he said.

“Even with detergent and deodorant, things are changing and you don’t just come up with a clever tag line or slogan and blast it out,” Morita said. “It’s about one-to-one relationships.”

Making Meaning | 15 Meanings

Orangutan Swing's insight:

Wonder is one of the things that are parto of what give us a feeling of meaningfulness, according to a book by marketing company Cheskin. While the book Orangutan Swing will write about meaning-making will slant more heavily towards the individual and not so much marketing, some of the themes here are appropriate and worthy of a footnote.

Poincare on Creativity

Orangutan Swing's insight:

Too many people shout about "what creativity is." They don't know. This guy knows. Among other things, he said this: "The creations involve a period of conscious work, followed by a period of unconscious work."

You have to let things steep for a while, if you overthink/overwork/overdo it, you lose the thread. The one that's tenuous, but that's perfect exactly because it is. You don't want to beat an idea to pieces, in the same way you don't want to get "monstrously overspecialized," as Robert Persig says in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, which I'm 3/4 through and had to just put down so I could Google "poincare fuschian equations."

A longtime editor on what makes for great books

"After 40 years in this business, I have come to the conclusion that what I want is to be engaged by books, to be drawn in at their beginnings and held to the very ends.

"Prevailing topics and styles aren’t of much interest to me. Real writers write from what strikes them as pressing and important and nobody should try to influence them away from that." ---Shannon Ravenel, former editor at Algonquin in Chapel Hill.

Want To Know Yourself Better? Ask Yourself These Questions. | Dialogue | Scoop.it

If you unexpectedly had a completely free afternoon, what would you do with that time?

As Christopher Alexander observed: “It is hard, so terribly hard, to please yourself. Far from being the easy thing that it sounds like, it is almost the hardest thing in the world, because we are not always comfortable with that true self that lies deep within us.”"

What Should I Do With My Life? by Po Bronson

What Should I Do With My Life? by Po Bronson | Dialogue | Scoop.it

When people heard this book’s title, the most common question I’d get asked was, "So is your book about life, or about careers?" And I’d laugh, and warn them not to get trapped by semantics, and answer, "It’s about people who’ve dared to be honest with themselves."
