Keeping the Bracelets On
I'm so not ready to go back to the real world.

Children With Diabetes Friends for Life Conference 2012 was AMAZING!!! There are a lot of things I want to tell you about. But I need to gather my thoughts and catch up on some sleep first.

It was so wonderful to see some of my best friends, and make some new ones. It's always so incredible when you meet people from D blogs or twitter in person, because you already know them. It's a feeling that's hard to describe. And I got to meet some incredible people this week. And spend time with great friends....

Pump Their lives … Children Diabetes Campaign 2012 | RamadanBuzz | diabetes and more | Scoop.it

It is with great pleasure that BSC has teamed up with the Kuwaiti Red Crescent and the Dasman Diabetes Institute for its rst project, to raise funds to provide insulin pumps for children with type 1 diabetes in Kuwait. This form of therapy has numerous advantages relative to other forms of treatment, however due to its high cost only 10% of children in Kuwait have access to the insulin pump. Kuwait has the seventh highest incidence rates of type 1 diabetes in children 14 years or younger, which highlights the importance of the cause BSC has chosen to support.

CWD FFL 2012: Parenting with Type 1 Diabetes.

The first time I sat in the Parenting with Type 1 diabetes session, I was a first time mom, and a new one. My daughter was about 14 months old and I was just starting to process the fact that I spent years planning for my pregnancy but I hadn't thought much about what to do once she had escaped my womb.

This year, I was able to function during this session without crying. (Which is a good thing, since I was part of the faculty leading the sessions, along with Scott Johnson and Stefan Rubin.) I'm not sure why it was easier this year - nothing has changed in terms of me being more or less emotional. I still feel weak when I think about how diabetes might affect my daughter. I still feel lost when I think about the hypoglycemic episodes my own child has experienced. But maybe that's what makes it easier, in a sense. She's been in my life for over two years, and we've had some health issues (like Pukefest 2012), so I'm not as scared of "what to do." I've already had to do a few "things."....

Zonulin and Its Regulation of Intestinal Barrier Function: The Biological Door to Inflammation, Autoimmunity, and Cancer

Next Section
Abstract

The primary functions of the gastrointestinal tract have traditionally been perceived to be limited to the digestion and absorption of nutrients and to electrolytes and water homeostasis. A more attentive analysis of the anatomic and functional arrangement of the gastrointestinal tract, however, suggests that another extremely important function of this organ is its ability to regulate the trafficking of macromolecules between the environment and the host through a barrier mechanism. Together with the gut-associated lymphoid tissue and the neuroendocrine network, the intestinal epithelial barrier, with its intercellular tight junctions, controls the equilibrium between tolerance and immunity to non-self antigens. Zonulin is the only physiological modulator of intercellular tight junctions described so far that is involved in trafficking of macromolecules and, therefore, in tolerance/immune response balance. When the finely tuned zonulin pathway is deregulated in genetically susceptible individuals, both intestinal and extraintestinal autoimmune, inflammatory, and neoplastic disorders can occur. This new paradigm subverts traditional theories underlying the development of these diseases and suggests that these processes can be arrested if the interplay between genes and environmental triggers is prevented by reestablishing the zonulin-dependent intestinal barrier function. This review is timely given the increased interest in the role of a “leaky gut” in the pathogenesis of several pathological conditions targeting both the intestine and extraintestinal organs.
