College life can be highly stressful at times and students need to find a way to cope with it and find some comfort.
The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a relationship between types of internet use and well being. The researchers wanted to learn if internet uses some how connects to well being of college students. Thus, they chose 312 college students among whom 67% were females, between ages of 18 and 49. Thirty three percent were males, ranging between 21 and 34 years of age. what the study had shown was that college students mainly use internet for purposes of meeting People, Information Seeking, Distraction, Coping, and E-mail. The results also showed that coping needs involved complications such as depression, social anxiety and family cohesion.
The researcher Keith Anderson decided to conduct a research amongst 1,300 college students to look for any evidence that would show if internet use has an influence on college students' social or academic skills. the study results showed that there were relatively few student whose academic progress was negatively use by online use.On average, majority of the students who were surveyed spent 100 minutes/day on Internet. The 100 minute time period was comprised of 39 min/day cruising on internet, 35 min/day checking and replying to e-mail, 8 min/day playing games, 7 min/day on chatting, 5 min/day for usenet activities, 4 min/day on FTP and 1 min/day for MUD activities. Thus, majority of time was spent on browsing the internet and an checking e-mail inbox.
Furthermore, the researchers had divided the sample in 3 groups: hard sciences (chemistry, engineering, physics computer sciences and math), arts and sciences ( allied health, anthropology, sociology criminal justice) and liberal arts (political science, communications, history, business or undeclared major). The study of these three groups had shown that those who are in hard sciences tend to use internet the most, an average of 123 min/day comparing to arts and sciences 81 min/day and liberal arts 79 min/day.
