Transforming creativity: Personalized manufacturing meets embodied computing

Abstract: This paper discusses aspects of a collaborative investigation of  embodied computing and personal manufacturing. We describe the  NeuroMaker 1.0, an artwork that playfully implements the concept of  “translating of the designer’s ideas into a product”. Visitors to the installation were invited to use their own EEG to fabricate personalized physical objects. While primarily intended to provoke thought about the process of creativity, we also demonstrated that, with the right team, radical new interfaces are well within the reach.

Topic Modeling

Topic Modeling | DHHpC12 @ICHASS | Scoop.it

FROM SITE: Topic models provide a simple way to analyze large volumes of unlabeled text. A "topic" consists of a cluster of words that frequently occur together. Using contextual clues, topic models can connect words with similar meanings and distinguish between uses of words with multiple meanings.

TESTING MULTITHEORETICAL, MULTILEVEL HYPOTHESES ABOUT ORGANIZATIONAL NETWORKS

TESTING MULTITHEORETICAL, MULTILEVEL HYPOTHESES ABOUT ORGANIZATIONAL NETWORKS | DHHpC12 @ICHASS | Scoop.it

ABSTRACT: Network forms of organization, unlike hierarchies or marketplaces, are agile and are constantly adapting as new links are added and dysfunctional ones dropped. We review some of the theoretical and methodological accomplishments and challenges of contemporary research on organizational networks. We then offer an analytic framework that can be used to specify and statistically test simultaneously multilevel, multitheoretical hypotheses about the structural tendencies of organizational networks. We conclude with an empirical study illustrating some of the capabilities of this framework.

Day 4. Wed. June 13, 2012; 11:00-11:50am

Alex Yahja

Social Media & Networks

Social Media exists because of social needs and drivers.

Social: it's who you know

Cognitive: it's who they think you know

Knowledge: what they think you know

...

Theories of Networking (I didn't get them all...hoping for slides)

Self-Interest

Mutual Interest & Collective Action

Contagian Theories

Cognitive Theories

Exchange & Dependency Theories

Homophily and Proximity

Balance Theories

Coevolutionary Theory

Definition: Social network analysis is the mapping and measuring of realtionships and flows between people, groups, and organizations + <i>spacetime</i>.

Data Representation

Matrix of relationship

Semantic Graph:

*Node- a person or entities, w/attributes

*Link-a relationship, w/attributes ("friend w/): directed: one-way; undirected: two-way

*Attributes

....

Building the Graph

Each person is a node, a relationship is a link

Links can by directed or undirected

Graphs can have cycles.

Degree of Separation.

"Best" location in network:

most popular

best location

closest to everyone

not connected/think outside the box (less prone to group-think)

Day 4 Wed. June 13, 2012; 1:00-5:00pm

Working with networking applications.

ORA: http://www.casos.cs.cmu.edu/projects/ora/index.php

With the free time at the end of the day I'm trying to build a map with a heavily edited version of the workshop agenda. Once I have that analysis and visual, I'm hoping to do the same with the tweets generated through the conference and compare/contrast results. I'm even betting there is a way to combine the two texts...but that is way above my beginner pay grade.

Cyberinfrastructure and the Humanities

Some history of ICHASS.

DH is interdisciplinary field that is interested in archiving, analyzing, and interpreting human activity

Humanities is about contextualzing information; we can help comptuers do that (and/or they help us do that).

CS folks like to work with difficult problems; nobody has more difficult problems than Humanities scholars.

Discuss that the technologies are accessible enough to use with students.

Explicitly mentions that we need to be inclusive about CS folks as co-authors on the projects.

Building a DH PhD program at Clemson.
