Devolution Evolution
My Scoop.it topic, the "devolution revolution" has to do with the rise of vinyl sales this year, even while overall sales of recorded music are declining. It seems to me that vinyl and analog are working together to reproduce a warmer recorded sound of the past, and it's got me wondering, when so many styles, fashions, and trends from earlier generations are recycled, will the future be on vinyl?

Jacob Harley's insight:

A smartphone application that reads vinyl records right from your phone! this is brilliant, especially because the 3.5 mm output jacks on phones are compatible with so many speaker playback devices these days.  Could this be the next big thing driving vinyl sales? Furthermore, It's interesting to think that the combination of vinyl and new digital technology could actually lead to the extinction of CDs..

We ❤ Retro Media: Vinyl, VHS, Tapes & Film | Off Book | PBS | Devolution Evolution | Scoop.it

We live in a digital world that gives us all the media we could possibly dream of at the click of a mouse, yet many people miss the old school physical formats from our past. Listening to vinyl and cassettes allows us to connect with music in a different way than MP3s. VHS and 8mm create visual aesthetics and atmospheres that are difficult to replicate in digital video. And the surprises inherent to analog instant photography help embed an organic quality to the recording of our memories. The challenges these retro formats present to capturing and experiencing media actually enhance our appreciation for the sound or image, making the art we love a bit more intimate, and real.

Soundtracks Get Vinyl Releases | Film School Rejects

Soundtracks Get Vinyl Releases | Film School Rejects | Devolution Evolution | Scoop.it

We may stand in line to get our hands on the latest technology and watch as record stores close their doors as more and more music fans turn to iTunes and digital downloads instead of physical CDs, but there is still something about vinyl records that keep people coming back for more. While digital files are crisp and polished, it is almost impossible for a studio to duplicate the richness that comes from vinyl – plus those little imperfections and pops that come from listening to a record can sometimes be the best part. Even though CDs may seem like they are becoming a way of the past, there is a new trend coming forward and one that seems to be popping up more and more with soundtrack releases – the option to get these compilations on vintage vinyl.

Sales of vinyl LPs up 33%, saving independent music stores | Devolution Evolution | Scoop.it
Jacob Harley's insight:

In a year where recorded music sales are down, vinyl sales are up, and some bands (most notably the robotic duo Daft Punk) are actually returning to the age of analog recording and vinyl.  Could this suggest a change in the industry?
