The Oil Drum | Don’t Count on Revolution in Oil Supply

The Oil Drum | Don’t Count on Revolution in Oil Supply | Développement durable et efficacité énergétique | Scoop.it

"..., many oil executives have stated publicly that incremental oil supplies are now in a precarious balance with capacity declines and will remain so for years to come.

Much as all the stakeholders in the energy industry would like to be optimistic, it isn’t an oil glut by 2020 that is keeping oil prices as high as they are. It is the reality that the oil sector has been pushed to the limit of its capabilities and that this difficult challenge will dominate energy markets for the rest of the decade."

Opportunities and challenges for a sustainable energy future

Opportunities and challenges for a sustainable energy future | Développement durable et efficacité énergétique | Scoop.it

Access to clean, affordable and reliable energy has been a cornerstone of the world's increasing prosperity and economic growth since the beginning of the industrial revolution. Our use of energy in the twenty–first century must also be sustainable. Solar and water–based energy generation, and engineering of microbes to produce biofuels are a few examples of the alternatives. This Perspective puts these opportunities into a larger context by relating them to a number of aspects in the transportation and electricity generation sectors. It also provides a snapshot of the current energy landscape and discusses several research and development opportunities and pathways that could lead to a prosperous, sustainable and secure energy future for the world.

Is LEED Certified Construction Management Worth the Investment? - Green Conduct

Is LEED Certified Construction Management Worth the Investment? - Green Conduct | Développement durable et efficacité énergétique | Scoop.it
Nearly every major city or province is investigating the possibilities of renewable energy, as attested in a recent post about the Bala Falls Hydro Project in Ontario. There are two competing interests in construction management today: first, to overcome the slumping market and sell buildings; and second, to build with energy-saving and eco-conscious features in mind. Ideally, these two should go hand in hand, and in many cases they do.

It can be tempting, though, for construction managers to seek cost-saving shortcuts for purposes of funding or expedience. Designing a building to be “green,” and seeking green certifications, is a costly and time-consuming process, which has many wondering whether the investment is worth it. In most cases, buildings built to green standards save a lot of money in energy costs over the years.

Global Energy Subsidies Map -- National Geographic

Global Energy Subsidies Map -- National Geographic | Développement durable et efficacité énergétique | Scoop.it
Fossil-fuel subsidies are a growing fiscal burden that encourage wasteful consumption. See which countries have the largest subsidies around the world.

Nations are weighing phaseout of fossil fuel subsidies, a growing fiscal burden that ratchets up carbon dioxide emissions by encouraging wasteful oil, natural gas, and coal consumption. The largest subsidies are in developing countries, which spend more than $400 billion annually shielding their populations from high fuel prices. But oil industry tax breaks and other government measures in developed nations also subsidize fossil fuels, to the tune of $45 billion to $75 billion per year.

English community takes collective ownership of solar farm.

Solar power is going communal in rural England.

A group of community members about 75 miles west of London have launched a citizen takeover of a 5 megawatt solar photovoltaic array, aiming to buy it back from the financiers who helped it get built on a farmer's land a year ago. Through a share offering, the group is hoping to create the world's largest cooperatively owned solar farm.

Does the growing craze for sidewalk dining create an influx of eco-friendly food vehicles — or just gas-guzzling polluters?

Many food truck vendors practice good green habits, but it's the ones who employ these components that should receive a thumbs-up for sustainability:

The use of locally farmed ingredients.
Trucks fueled with biodiesel or vegetable oil.
Trucks with zero-emissions systems.
The use of propane and rechargeable batteries.
The use of solar power.
No idling engine.

Sunflower-Inspired Solar Panels Track Sun Without Motors

Sunflower-Inspired Solar Panels Track Sun Without Motors | Développement durable et efficacité énergétique | Scoop.it
A new solar tracker maximizes the sunlight solar panels can capture, without using additional electricity to do so.

The system depends on a new material Jiang's team developed, which combines a rubbery material, called liquid crystalline elastomer, with tiny carbon fibers. The fibers are able to absorb a wide range of light, including light waves in the visible and infrared spectrums.

When sunlight falls on the carbon fibers, they heat up. The difference in temperature between the hot carbon fibers and the cooler outside air causes the liquid crystalline elastomer to shrink. When the sun moves on, the material cools and expands again to its original size.

Jiang stood hexagonal solar panels on top of an array of six columns made of his new sun-activated material. Whenever sunlight hit one of the columns, it shrank, tilting the panel on top toward the sun. Compared with solar panels that don't move, the sun-facing panels harvest 10 percent more energy, Jiang's team found.

Three Sustainable Cities on the Rise

Three Sustainable Cities on the Rise | Développement durable et efficacité énergétique | Scoop.it
The green living lifestyle skyrocketed in the last decade and became a social injection of epic proportions. In no time shoes were being made from bamboo, college towns were turned into tiny Vespa cities, and the canvas bag market boomed like it was being shot from a cannon. Suddenly, shrinking America’s Shaq-sized carbon footprint seemed possible, and everything from water bottles to t-shirts changed their ingredients.

There are plenty of ways to go green and promote sustainable living in your home and community. Beyond simply rolling out the recycle bin to the curb and making eco-chic clutches out of Capri Sun pouches, you can get innovative with your recycling through local waste services like Republic Services in the US and other international equivalents who, by changing the way they take care of trash and recyclables, are making money from your waste. Earth consciousness is perpetually rising, and waste management is following suit. Here’s a quick trip around the globe, looking at three sustainable cities on the rise and what they’re doing to be friendly to the earth...
