NIssan announces the Leaf has sold over 50,000 cars since debuting in late 2010, and some quick math shows it may actually have outpaced the Toyota Prius.
Stephane Bilodeau's insight:

So who is the winner here in this comparison of well known green car models? By just a side to side view, it is obviously the Leaf over the same numerical sales period against the others. In terms of historical precedent, one has to give the title to Toyota though for showing the way for other car manufacturers on how to make and successfully market for well over a decade a funky looking hybrid that somehow has wormed its way into many driveways around the world.

Sustainable Renewables: Inconsistent Policies Stall A Fossil Fuel-Free Future, Experts Say | Développement durable et efficacité énergétique | Scoop.it
From his solar panel manufacturing facility in Marysville, Wash., Gary Shaver can see and hear passing coal trains. "The tracks are maybe a block away, and this is not a Texas block," said Shaver, president of Silicon Energy, LLC.
Stephane Bilodeau's insight:

But while renewable power generation from green sources has already doubled in the U.S. over the past four years, some energy experts and industry representatives suggest the supports are not yet in place for the industry to achieve its full potential or for the country to wean itself off of fossil fuels. These experts highlight the need for long-term, consistent policies that incentivize investment, manufacturing and deployment of clean technologies -- much as feed-in tariffs have done for Europe -- in conjunction with penalties for greenhouse gas emissions.

GE, Google Launch Mapping Partnership for Smart Grid, Energy | Greentech Media

GE, Google Launch Mapping Partnership for Smart Grid, Energy | Greentech Media | Développement durable et efficacité énergétique | Scoop.it

The two companies announced Tuesday morning that they’re integrating Google Maps data into GE's Smallworld electrical, telecommunications and gas applications -- a set of geospatial analytics tools and software that GE has adapted for Web, mobile and desktop use. On the smart grid front, GE is building Google’s mapping content into its grid distribution management system (DMS) and outage management system (OMS), and it’s also tapping Google’s Android platform to augment its existing mobile products, mainly to give them better, more information-rich maps.

This amounts to a major announcement in the relatively small world of utility geospatial information system (GIS) vendors, to be sure. Today’s market is dominated by such players as Esri and Intergraph, in-house products from grid giants like Alstom and Siemens, and up-and-comers like startup Space-Time Insight.

GTM Research has predicted U.S. utilities will spend between $110 million and $180 million on GIS upgrades and replacements from 2010 to 2015, with projects ranging from the high end, such as Southern California Edison’s $71 million upgrade of its 10-year-old GIS, to a few hundred thousand dollars for small municipal or cooperative utilities.

“Google's rich mapping content will form an integral part of GE's solutions, strengthening the existing geospatial capabilities of GE's Smallworld products by providing out-of-the-box base mapping as well as visualization and analytics capabilities,” according to the announcement.

Kaley Hannon's curator insight, October 22, 2013 12:40 AM

Google has made an ethical decision to join GE in going green. Google is placing it's rich mapping content into the realm of smart grids to allow GE to grow and expand their electrical, telecommunications, and gas application. Google made this decision by using the ethical decision-making guide and deciding that it was not illegal, it did not violate company or professional standards, and that it only affected others positively.

When people talk about “clean energy,” they often mean wind or solar power, and when they’re discussing “energy efficiency" or "energy conservation,” they’re usually talking about doing things like remembering to turn off the lights.

But energy efficiency IS clean energy, just like solar and wind. It’s also cheaper than fossil fuels and doesn’t create pollution. It’s an energy resource that your local utility can help you create by taking simple steps that add up to defeating the behemoth of Dirty Power that’s overheating our planet and fouling our air and water.  It can also save us money on our utility bills!

Clean Energy | The Union of Concerned Scientist | Développement durable et efficacité énergétique | Scoop.it

TThe Union of Concerned Scientists puts rigorous, independent science to work to solve our planet's most pressing problems.

Our energy choices have direct implications for our health, our environment, and our climate—and right now we are dangerously dependent on coal and other fossil fuels for most of our electricity needs.

Power generation is a leading cause of air pollution and the single largest source of U.S. global warming emissions.

Coal is the worst offender, a dirty energy source that produces less than half our electricity but more than 80 percent of all power plant carbon emissions, along with significant and harmful levels of pollutants that degrade our environment and adversely impact our health.

Via Victor VicPal

Obama gives green energy funds a jump-start | Reuters.com | Développement durable et efficacité énergétique | Scoop.it

In the wake of yet another monster storm in the Northeastern U.S., we are once again reminded of the need to address climate change, which is like a Grendel that keeps coming out of its cave to ravage us with increasingly violent weather.

The President outlined new initiatives on climate change in the State of the Union address on Tuesday. If they gain traction in Washington, it will give a boost to stocks and exchange-traded funds that invest in alternative energy and global warming solutions.

"If Congress won't act soon to protect future generations, I will," President Obama said. "I will direct my Cabinet to come up with executive actions we can take, now and in the future, to reduce pollution, prepare our communities for the consequences of climate change, and speed the transition to more sustainable sources of energy,"

It is difficult to say how these proposals, which have been bandied about Washington for years, will make it through a Congress more focused on fiscal issues and spending cuts. Yet even a modest increase in funding for alternative energy or a cap-and-trade carbon emissions program can revive a beleaguered sector. Here are some of the funds and stocks that will benefit:
