Tracking Clean Energy Progress 2013 examines progress in the development and deployment of key clean energy technologies. Each technology and sector is tracked against interim 2020 targets in the IEA 2012 Energy Technology Perspectives 2°C scenario, which lays out pathways to a sustainable energy system in 2050.

 

Stark message emerge: progress has not been fast enough; large market failures and preventing clean energy solutions from being taken up; considerable energy efficiency remains untapped; policies need to better address the energy system as a whole; and energy-related research, development and demonstration need to accelerate.

 

Alongside these grim conclusions there is positive news. In 2012, hybrid-electric vehicle sales passed the 1 million mark. Solar photovoltaic systems were being installed at a record pace. The costs of most clean energy technologies fell more rapidly than anticipated

When three of the world's biggest polluters pledge to do more to rein in their climate emissions, that's a pretty good day.

The pledge also reiterates China’s intention to halt the rise of its greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, and to get about 20 percent of its electricity from non–fossil fuel sources by that same year, as first announced in a deal with the U.S. in November. That still gives the country 15 years to keep increasing its climate pollution, but Li said China will “strive for the earliest possible peak,” and there are other signs that the country in fact plans to meet and exceed its goals faster than it is committing to. China’s coal consumption has dropped off dramatically. The country is also now one of the world’s biggest investors in renewable energy.

Just a few hours after the China announcement, President Obama and Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff — the leaders of the Western Hemisphere’s two most populous countries — came forward with their own climate announcement. The leaders promised to have their countries running on 20 percent non-hydroelectric renewables by 2030.

If Greenland goes, it is becoming clear that it won’t go quietly.

Scientists have already documented entire meltwater lakes vanishing in a matter of hours atop the vast Greenland ice sheet, as huge crevasses open beneath them. And now, they’ve cast light on the mechanisms behind another dramatic geophysical effect brought on by the rumbling and melting of this mass of often mile-thick ice: earthquakes.

In a new paper in the journal Science, a team of researchers from Swansea University in the UK, the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University, and several other institutions explain how the loss of Greenland’s ice can generate glacial earthquakes. In brief: When vast icebergs break off at the end of tidal glaciers, they tumble in the water and jam the glaciers themselves backwards. The result is a seismic event detectable across the Earth.

“These are all around magnitude 4.6 to 5.2, they’re all pretty close to magnitude 5,” says Meredith Nettles of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University, a co-author of the study. “Which is a pretty big earthquake.”

Granted, these earthquakes aren’t caused by faults – they’re caused by massive movements of ice and how those impact the ground beneath. Compared with the early 1990s, Nettles says, scientists are now measuring seven times as many of these glacial earthquakes coming from Greenland — the rate has shot up as the ice sheet has begun to lose more mass from the calving of icebergs at the front end of glaciers.

Each gigaton sized iceberg would be equivalent to roughly a quarter of a percent of Greenland’s estimated 378 gigaton annual ice loss. It takes 360 gigatons to raise the global sea level by a millimeter, so Greenland is doing that roughly annually, as icebergs fall into the sea and glaciers retreat further. (In all, the ice sheet contains enough water to raise global sea levels by 6 meters, or 20 feet.)

The loss of ice occurs both through iceberg calving — which explains almost half of Greenland’s total loss, according to the new study — and mechanisms like simple drainage. Here, as meltwater atop the ice sheet finds ways of flowing down to its base (sometimes through sudden lake drainage), it then makes its way to the ocean. But both mechanisms have their explosive elements — earthquakes, tsunamis, lake vanishings — albeit in very different ways.

While key details of China's plan are not yet known, it is expected to include targets announced in November, when it reached a key climate change deal with Washington to cap its emissions by 2030 and fill 20 percent of its energy needs from zero-carbon sources.

Earlier this month, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang reaffirmed the government's commitment to hit a carbon emissions peak by "around 2030". The country's coal consumption decreased for the first time in years in 2014, however, leading some to speculate that its emissions could reach their peak sooner.

"Saudi Arabia produces much of its electricity by burning oil, a practice that most countries abandoned long ago, reasoning that they could use coal and natural gas instead and save oil for transportation, an application for which there is no mainstream alternative. Most of Saudi Arabia’s power plants are colossally inefficient, as are its air conditioners, which consumed 70 percent of the kingdom’s electricity in 2013. Although the kingdom has just 30 million people, it is the world’s sixth-largest consumer of oil.

 

Now, Saudi rulers say, things must change. Their motivation isn’t concern about global warming; the last thing they want is an end to the fossil-fuel era. Quite the contrary: they see investing in solar energy as a way to remain a global oil power.

 

The Saudis burn about a quarter of the oil they produce—and their domestic consumption has been rising at an alarming 7 percent a year, nearly three times the rate of population growth. According to a widely read December 2011 report by Chatham House, a British think tank, if this trend continues, domestic consumption could eat into Saudi oil exports by 2021 and render the kingdom a net oil importer by 2038."

These are the top-tier researchers doing research for the Vatican

 

Several dozen of the world’s most prominent scientists sprang from their seats and left the Vatican hall where they were holding a conference on the environment in May 2014. They were bound for a meet-and-greet with Pope Francis at the modest Vatican hotel where he lives, the Domus Sanctae Marthae.

Among the horde was Veerabhadran Ramanathan, a climate scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Since 2004, he has also been a member of a 400-year-old collective, one that operates as the pope’s eyes and ears on the natural world: the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.

He had a message for Pope Francis. Only it was too long.

 

The academy’s chancellor, Archbishop Marcelo Sánchez Sorondo, suggested to Ramanathan that he condense his thoughts to just two sentences — and deliver them to Francis in Spanish. Ramanathan, who speaks no Spanish, spent the balance of the eight-minute jaunt committing the words to memory. He got it down with moments to spare. The phrases vanished as soon as he caught a glimpse of Pope Francis himself.

"Reaching the pope is one thing. They also wanted to reach everybody else. Ramanathan and a coterie of his colleagues endorsed a follow-up plan. They would bring leaders of reason and faith together under one roof to talk about the most consequential risk humanity has had to confront since the advent of nuclear weaponry.

That’s why in April, the Vatican invited representatives from the world’s religions — including Buddhists, Hindus, Jews, Muslims, and other Christians — to a symposium discussing climate science and the ways religious leaders might lead on the issue.

More than a dozen faith leaders heard from one of the world’s top climate scientists, Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, about how the earth went “from glacial chaos to climate paradise” during the last big climate transition 12,000 years ago, and what we may be in store for next.

They heard from Nobel Laureate Paul Crutzen, who popularized the notion that human industry has shoved the world into a new geological phase — the “anthropocene,” or in plainspeak, “the human age.”

And they heard Jeffrey Sachs, prolific writer and Columbia University economist, say that “we can still, but just barely,” avoid pollution levels that lead to dangerous climate change risk."

Er. Tan Seng Chuan, chairman of WES on Climate Change 2015 steering committee, said that one of the objectives of the conference is to increase awareness among engineers that they need to think about climate change from the inception of a project, especially in emerging Asia.

Having been an engineer for about four decades, Dr Bindu N. Lohani of the ADB knows first-hand how science – and technological solutions – hold the key to solving one of the world’s biggest challenges: climate change.

Besides emphasising the fact that engineering innovations in areas such as energy efficiency and renewable energy are vital to climate change mitigation, Dr Lohani adds that there is also technology that already exists that can help governments “climate proof” infrastructure to adapt to climate change. These are in the areas of materials composition, e.g. temperature-resilient paving materials; design, e.g., porous pavement to accommodate more intense precipitation; and location of infrastructure to reduce risks from rising sea levels.

At the same time, the engineering community needs to challenge itself and devise ways to overcome existing technological limitations, he says.

“The first is air travel, for which no economically proven alternative to carbon-based fuels currently exists. The second is carbon capture and storage, which may prove critical since the removal of carbon emissions may become necessary if we are to remain within a two degrees Celsius increase in temperatures, which is considered by scientists to be the ‘safe’ limit.”

Born in Kathmandu, Dr Lohani graduated with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from India’s Birla Institute of Technology and Science in 1970, following which he worked for the Nepali government’s departments of housing and physical planning; roads; and local development.

Le facteur principal qui justifie la décision des familles est la pauvreté. En 2013, 30% de la population bangladaise vivait avec moins de 1 dollar par jour, selon le réseau Climat et Développement. Même si l’école est gratuite, beaucoup de parents ne peuvent pas payer le matériel scolaire de leurs enfants, ou même les nourrir tous les jours. Les filles sont les plus touchées car la discrimination sexuelle est ancrée dans la société bangladaise. Les garçons sont la priorité des familles. Quand les filles se marient, elles doivent aller vivre dans la famille de leur époux. Le mariage apparaît donc pour les parents comme un moyen de survie. Et plus la fille est jeune, moins la dot à apporter est élevée.

 

Les catastrophes naturelles jouent un rôle croissant dans le perpétuement de ce phénomène social. La situation géographique du Bangladesh rend la population particulièrement vulnérable aux catastrophes naturelles : cyclones, inondations, sécheresse, séismes, érosion, tornades. Le pays en subit au moins une par an, et perd 3% de son PIB tous les ans à cause de ces désastres, selon l’Agence suisse pour le développement et la coopération. Le changement climatique rend ces catastrophes plus fréquentes et plus dévastatrices. Ainsi, tous les ans, des villages et des terrains sont dévastés, des familles mises à la rue. En prévision de tels événements, certains parents préfèrent marier leurs filles, et leur assurer un futur dans une autre famille.

With only 30% of people in Africa having access to electricity, it’s little wonder Tesla’s Powerwall home-storage batteries are being touted as the next big revolution for African energy. In countries like Nigeria diesel-powered generators are the default back-up for chronic, daily national power cuts. Tesla’s Powerwall battery works as a back-up that is not reliant on fossil fuels. It stores renewable energy like solar and wind and can last more than 24 hours. All this at no cost other than the upfront cost of the Powerwall itself.

After months of build up, an Italian-language document believed to be an early draft of Pope Francis’ encyclical on the environment was leaked four days early on Monday, breaking a Vatican embargo on an official papal teaching that flatly rejects traditional conservative Christian justifications for exploiting the planet.

“We are not God,” the document reads. “The earth precedes us and was given to us. This allows us to respond to an accusation made against Judeo-Christian thinking: it has been said that, from the story of Genesis, which invites us to subjugate the earth (Genesis 1:28), the savage exploitation of nature would be encouraged, presenting the image of human beings as ruler and destroyer. This is not the correct interpretation of the Bible as intended by the Church.”

The future of coal has come under scrutiny from a perhaps unlikely source – the head of the organisation representing wealthy nations that relied on coal for 32% of electricity generation last year.

Angel Gurría, secretary-general of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), said the scale of new investments in “unabated” coal-fired electricity generation − where greenhouse gases are emitted directly to the atmosphere − posed the most urgent threat to the Earth’s climate.

Speaking in London, he said governments should be sceptical about the benefits of coal for their citizens. They should rethink the role of coal in energy supply, and conduct a more rigorous evaluation of its true costs.

Without new mitigation measures, coal generation is projected to emit more than 500 billion tonnes of CO2 between now and 2050 − eating up around half the remaining carbon budget that scientists say is consistent with keeping a global temperature rise below 2°C.

In any case, Dr Gurría said, countries’ contributions to emissions reductions after 2020 are not consistent with a 2°C pathway. He said the carbon clock was ticking and the Paris COP21 climate conference must give a clear and credible signal that governments are determined to go for a higher level of ambition.

Barack Obama and Dilma Rousseff put climate change at the top of their agenda at their bilateral meeting on Tuesday, with the US and Brazil agreeing to obtain up to 20% of their electricity from renewable power by 2030.

Brazil also committed to restoring up to 12m hectares of forest – an area about the size of England or Pennsylvania – in another attempt to reduce the carbon pollution that causes climate change.

The White House said the initiatives were part of a new US-Brazil climate partnership, loosely modelled on the historic US-China agreement reached during Obama’s visit to Beijing last November, intended to build momentum for a global deal to fight climate change in Paris at the end of the year.

“Following progress during my trips to China and India, this shows that the world’s major economies can begin to transcend some of the old divides and work together to confront the common challenge that we face,” said Obama at a joint press conference with his Brazilian counterpart.

Rousseff also heralded the agreement as a highlight of her trip, claiming it would help progress towards a global emissions reductions agreement at upcoming talks in Paris.

“Climate change is one of the central challenges of the 21st century,” she said. “And we have one important objective, which is, number one, to ensure that the energy mix in our two countries will have a substantial share of renewable sources of energy.

Rich and poor countries alike have been putting forth their commitments, known as nationally determined contributions, to reduce emissions as part of the treaty, which world leaders hope to finalise later this year in Paris.

Brazil also plans to expand renewable energy sources other than hydropower to between 28% and 33% of its total energy mix by 2030.

And in the electricity sector, the US and Brazil jointly announced intentions to increase their share of renewable, non-hydropower sources to 20% by 2030. Deese said boosting renewables that high in the US would be dependent on controversial power plant emission limits that the Obama administration has proposed.

“We believe that this is an ambitious target, but one that is actually achievable and will create new low-cost opportunities for the American economy,” Deese said. “To achieve it, we’re going to have to continue to hit our marks in implementing the regulations we’ve identified to date.”

Bill Gates, qui considère le changement climatique comme une menace importante pour la planète, a ajouté qu'il n'était «pas vraiment contre le désinvestissement», mais il doit aller de pair avec «des investissements sérieux dans des technologies révolutionnaires».


Selon le Groupe intergouvernemental d'experts sur l'évolution du climat (GIEC), il est urgent de se détourner massivement des énergies fossiles, en particulier du charbon, et d'investir massivement dans l'efficacité énergétique pour découpler croissance et émissions de gaz à effet de serre.

 

Des entreprises, des banques et des fonds d'investissements ont récemment annoncé leur intention de se retirer du charbon et autres industries néfastes pour le climat.

ENVIRONNEMENT – Comme chaque année, le concours du meilleur photographe d'environnement nous offre un florilège de clichés à la fois impressionnants et inquiétants. L'objectif ? Voir au-delà du cliché pour attirer l'attention sur les problèmes environnementaux.

Plus de 10.000 photographes et réalisateurs originaires d'une soixantaine de pays différents ont immortalisé des scènes captivantes aux quatre coins du globe. Organisé par la londonienne Royal Geographical Society et la CIWEM (Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management) et sponsorisé par Atkins, le concours est ouvert aussi bien aux amateurs qu'aux professionnels.

Ces photographies sont destinées à démontrer l'existence d'un lien entre les questions environnementales et sociales. Tout en éveillant les consciences, elles suscitent de nombreuses interrogations sur les dégâts causés par les hommes sur Terre. Et pour cette édition 2015, la barre semble être placée très haut.

"Les inscriptions pour le prix de 2015 sont de très haut niveau. Les clichés nous exposent à des sujets qui font réfléchir, et qui nous poussent à mettre en question l'impact que nous avons sur la planète, à la fois en tant qu'individu et citoyen" , s'est en effet réjoui selon la BBC Nigel Hendley, l'un des juges et également chef de la direction intérimaire de la CIWEM.

Changements climatiques, surpopulation, catastrophes naturelles, biodiversité, développement durable, pauvreté et conséquences de la mondialisation... Des domaines fondamentaux sont abordés par ces artistes, qui parviennent à montrer à quel point la nature est fragile malgré sa beauté déroutante.

Pope Francis is proving to be the first “environmentalist pope.” It turns out he also may be the first urbanist pope–not counting the aptly named Pope Urban of the 3rd Century.

 

Today marks an important milestone in the global effort to combat climate change: the full support of the Pope, who today issued a wide-ranging Encyclical statement urging the world to pursue sustainable development, and clarifying the link between Catholic teaching and environmentalism. As part of this wide ranging document critiquing modern capitalism’s inability to create healthy and just environments, Pope Francis also specified his thinking on the importance of cities in the creation of a healthier and more equitable world.

 

He writes in Chapter 1 (What is Happening to Our Common Home) that “Nowadays, for example, we are conscious of the disproportionate and unruly growth of many cities, which have become unhealthy to live in, not only because of pollution caused by toxic emissions but also as a result of urban chaos, poor transportation, and visual pollution and noise. Many cities are huge, inefficient structures, excessively wasteful of energy and water. Neighbourhoods, even those recently built, are congested, chaotic and lacking in sufficient green space. We were not meant to be inundated by cement, asphalt, glass and metal, and deprived of physical contact with nature.”

 

For those already working on issues related to sustainable urbanism, none of this is particularly new. But for this thinking to come from the Catholic Church itself, an institution that commands the moral respect of millions of Catholics, is a momentous occasion.

 

As the first pope from the Global South, Francis’s background has no doubt exposed him to the problems of unsustainable development. Born as Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, Francis had exposure to urban poverty in Latin America throughout his career, often visiting residents of Buenos Aires’s shantytowns, or Villa miseria.

China should be given more credit for its investment in clean electricity, the head of the International Energy Agency says.

Maria van der Hoeven says most people think that China is frantically building coal-fired power stations.

The reality, she says, is that China is spending as much as the US and Europe put together on clean power.

She says its coal-fired power stations are state of the art - and should be copied in other developing countries.

Maria van der Hoeven told BBC News: "People think about China in a way more representative of previous decades.

"They are now the largest wind power market in the world. They have increased their power generation from renewables from really nothing 10 years ago - and now it's 25%. These are very important signals that China is moving into the right direction."

Her organisation - the rich countries' energy think-tank - says in 2014 that China spent more than $80bn in new renewables generating capacity; higher than the EU ($46bn); Japan ($37bn) and the USA ($34bn).

China's commitment to renewables has benefited the rest of the world by creating a mass market that prompted a 70% reduction in the cost of solar panels in recent years.

Pour construire l’outil, la NASA a combiné des mesures historiques du monde réel avec des données de simulation du climat du « Fifth Coupled Model Intercomparison Project »,  un effort de collaboration mondiale pour étudier et mieux comprendre notre climat changeant. Les modèles prédictifs vont des scénarios « business as usual » (statu quo) jusqu’aux pires conditions avec des émissions de gaz à effet de serre extrêmement élevées.

L’agence estime que l’ensemble de données fournira aux scientifiques et aux planificateurs une bien meilleure compréhension des risques auxquels notre monde fragile devra faire face.

Ben van Beurden, the chief executive of Shell, told the Guardian that he would not enter the Arctic unless it could be done safely although he dismissed as “emotional” suggestions Shell should stay away just because the region was showing advanced signs of climate change. “I have spent a lot of time on this and I think we can do it responsibly.”
