The Most Thorough Summary (to date) of MOOC Completion Rates -

The Most Thorough Summary (to date) of MOOC Completion Rates - | Development of Higher Education | Scoop.it

How many times have you heard the statement that ‘MOOCs have a completion rate of 10%’ or ‘MOOCs have a completion rate of less than 10%’? The meme seems to have developed a life of its own, but try to research the original claim and you might find a bunch of circular references or anecdotes of one or two courses. Will the 10% meme hold up once we get more data?

Mooc Completion Rates

Mooc Completion Rates | Development of Higher Education | Scoop.it

The average completion rate for massive open online courses is less than 7 per cent, according to data compiled by an Open University doctoral student as part of her own Mooc studies.

Katy Jordan, whose PhD research focuses on online academic social networks, took time out from her doctorate to gather information on the number of people completing a range of free web-based courses. So far, she has tracked down information on the percentage of students completing 29 Moocs.

Would like to hear the audio to this presentation. Don't feel that universities are on their way out, but they will be forced to change.
Mark Smithers's comment, September 19, 2013 9:19 PM
Hi Benjamin, I agree. They aren't on their way out but they will need to change. The question is what what is a university for? If it's for doing what it does right now (which I don;t believe) then they won't exist. Ah semantics :)

The MOOC Bubble and the Attack on Public Education

The MOOC Bubble and the Attack on Public Education | Development of Higher Education | Scoop.it

In the last year, MOOCs have gotten a tremendous amount of publicity. Last November, the New York Times decided that 2012 was “the Year of the MOOC,” and columnists like David Brooks and Thomas Friedman have proclaimed ad nauseum that the MOOC “revolution” is a “tsunami” that will soon transform higher education. As a Time cover article on MOOCs put it—in a rhetorical flourish that has become a truly dead cliché—“College is Dead. Long Live College!”
