Will Ashton's comment, December 7, 2014 5:37 PM
The article discusses the huge hindrance protectionism can be to world trade. In this particular example, protectionism over food is the issue. This is due to ethical issues, health regulations (ie. The way certain countries treat crops or how they feed their animals) and primarily the worry that increased supply of certain foods can flood the market and therefore decrease the price of the good if demand stays the same. This would result in domestic farmers struggling. In the CETA talks between Canada and the EU, a lot of negotiation was required before the EU were prepared to let 45,000 more tonnes of beef and 75,000 more tonnes of pork into the EU free of tariff.
On the flip side, there is of course the argument that the protectionism can in fact prevent there from being choice within countries though. This article therefore shows some of the positives and negatives of free trade.
