Acculturating Students to Time-Limited Writing

Acculturating Students to Time-Limited Writing | Developing the writer | Scoop.it
Middle school language arts teacher Sarah Goodis-Orenstein offers tips on improving students' on-demand writing skills, which she argues are increasingly needed both on standardized tests and in the workplace.
Judith Morais's insight:

On demand writing assignments (ODWA) can develop the ability of students to write within short time frames. As Sarah points out in this article, students do need to develop this skill. Some interesting ideas and practices are shared in this article.

Using TodaysMeet in my English 8 Classroom

Using TodaysMeet in my English 8 Classroom | Developing the writer | Scoop.it
This is a guest post by Kris Campea, a grade 8 English teacher. Find her on Twitter. I am a strong proponent of discussions in my English classes, and I’m always looking for new ways for students t...
Judith Morais's insight:

TodaysMeet is a great way to encourage online discussions in the classroom. it works on a similar format as twitter but much easier to control. Students need the address to join your room. After adding their own name, they can begin sharing their thoughts. There is a word limit so that keeps everyone focused on being concise.

Easy to use and free!

A tester !

A lire ici : http://sco.lt/7H4SPJ

alexislucas's curator insight, March 25, 2014 4:37 PM

How Does Writing Affect Your Brain? [infographic]

How Does Writing Affect Your Brain? [infographic] | Developing the writer | Scoop.it
According to today’s infographic, writing can serve as a calming, meditative tool. Stream of conscious writing exercises, in particular, have been identified as helpful stress coping methods. Keeping a journal, for example, or trying out free-writing exercises, can drastically reduce your levels of stress.

Via Dennis T OConnor
Judith Morais's insight:

This is an interesting, thought-provoking infographic that addresses the place of writing in brain theories of learning. Two things I have taken away from this:

1. That cliches have lost their significance and this affects how we teach them.

2. Writing helps students acquire knowledge, so it should be incorporated into learning experiences.

Many Eyes : Word Tree

Many Eyes : Word Tree | Developing the writer | Scoop.it

Via Ana Cristina Pratas
Judith Morais's insight:

This site is in development and is interesting if you want to be part of this phase. The user uploads data sets onto the site which then allows for various visualisations of the information. The examples of data that I saw on the site were statistics, for example, the number of fatalities on the road, and lists of information to address a topic of interest for example perceptions on the use of a spa. There were no poems or continuous texts in the data sets, possibly because data has to be original before it will be accepted. The visualisations look promising - ranging from charts to word maps.

I've curated this site into my writing segment only because I see its value in assisting me to write texts for my students which I can then analyse with the available visualisations. The visualisations could perhaps be used to trigger my students own writing. I've registered with the site to see how this works if and when I get round to uploading my own writing.
