this "viewers choice" concept might seem to be limited to video platforms, but in a campaign from u.k. band hurts, the strategy has been applied to spotify.

The U.K. band Hurts decided to aim their music at a specific group in an innovative way.  The people they targeted are shown to be forgoing traditional radio in favor of Spotify.  The band teamed up with a trending author in the same group in order to provide Spotify only content that would feature an audio book coupled with music from the band.

Sean Garrett talks about Jay-Z's new album and its unique way of promotion.  He discusses the new ways that music is being promoted and why they are taking hold. 

 

This "free" album presents several Pros and Cons.

 

Pros: The album has become highly accessable.  This accesability will also apeal to non Jay-Z fans because it is free, patrons can download the music without risk.  The new tactic is publicity for Jay-Z and for Samsung, showing that the company is forward thinking and "hip".  This event lessens the search for pirated material because it is free.  Finally, it shows the artist reaching out to the consumer and trying to make the music easy to get. 

 

Cons:  While the music is free, it is exclusive to samsung users, and only to those who have smart phones.  The app collects a lot of personal data, and could be a security issue in the future.  The app is easily copied and has been used to distribute malware.
