DETROIT WILD CITY - Leblogdelaville

DETROIT WILD CITY - Leblogdelaville | Detroit | Scoop.it

Leni Sinclair: Rock photography’s overlooked grand matriarch | Detroit | Scoop.it

Let’s call it like it lies: There are few images in rock ’n’ roll as iconic as Leni Sinclair’s seminal MC5 photographs. And, as they say, half of life is just showing up. L'ENTITÉ: Détroit, USA: ville moribonde

L'ENTITÉ: Détroit, USA: ville moribonde | Detroit | Scoop.it

Situated Urban Research : Urban Agriculture

Situated Urban Research : Urban Agriculture | Detroit | Scoop.it

The Art Center community garden in midtown Detroit is evidently a wholly different entity to the self-generated patch in Hubbard Farms. Here, the University Center Cultural Association, which exists to promote and regenerate the midtown cultural district, has worked with local groups to create what is essentially a piece of public art.

Though it is not quite a top-down intervention, unsubtle fencing and a firmly-locked gate made clear that the sponsoring institutions were keen to protect the significant investment made here from undesirable sections of the community. Residents of the city of Detroit are invited to rent sections of bed at a subsidized rate and commit a set minimum of voluntary work. The garden provides an excellent way to demonstrate support for a revived Detroit so long as the garden is kept neat and presentable, and therefore comes across exclusive.

36 Hours in Detroit

36 Hours in Detroit | Detroit | Scoop.it

DESPITE recent news stories of a population exodus from Detroit, there are many reasons to make a pilgrimage to this struggling city right now — and not just because Eminem’s slick Super Bowl commercial showcased the inner strength of the Motor City. No video can portray the passion one finds on the streets of Detroit these days, where everyone from the doorman to the D.J. will tell you they believe in this city’s future. While certain areas are indeed eerily empty, other neighborhoods — including midtown, downtown and Corktown — are bustling with new businesses that range from creperies and barbecue joints catering to the young artists and entrepreneurs migrating to Motown, to a just-opened hostel that invites tourists to explore Detroit with the aid of local volunteer guides. In the historic Brush Park district, architecture buffs will find some lovely refurbished houses, and along Woodward Avenue, restored film palaces are a wonderful reminder that this city’s storied past includes not just automobiles, but also the entertainment industry. No urban enthusiast will want to miss the recovery that Detroit is now attempting

Is Detroit the new Brooklyn? | Need to Know | PBS

Is Detroit the new Brooklyn? | Need to Know | PBS | Detroit | Scoop.it

Last weekend, the New York Times featured a story in its Style section about the onslaught of hip, young urban pioneers streaming into downtown Detroit. These “creatives,” as they are being called, are taking advantage of low rents and the opportunity to recycle this abandoned, blank slate of an urban landscape into something new and exciting. There are restaurateurs and entrepreneurs of all stripes living alongside environmentalists and urban farmers. The city, according to the Times, seems like “a giant candy store for young college graduates wanting to be their own bosses.” One woman said that there’s a cool party just about every evening. The article pointed out that even though recent census figures show that Detroit’s overall population shrank by 25 percent in the last 10 years, downtown Detroit experienced a 59 percent increase in the number of college-educated residents under the age of 35.
