Abandoned Vanity Ballroom: Detroit's "Most Beautiful Dance Rendezvous" |

Abandoned Vanity Ballroom: Detroit's "Most Beautiful Dance Rendezvous" | | Detroit | Scoop.it

It was once billed as “Detroit’s most beautiful dance rendezvous”. And even in a state of abandonment, it’s easy to see why the Vanity Ballroom gained its reputation. Designed in 1929, architect Charles Agree envisioned a flamboyant venue for people to dance and enjoy the sounds of the big band. While the Vanity didn’t achieve the fame or notoriety of Agree’s other beautiful ballroom, the Grande, it hosted some of America’s biggest music stars before finally closing its doors in the early 1980s.

The Singularity : West Robinwood Street, Detroit, Michigan (ghost street)

Last week I read in the morning paper about a street here where 60 out of 66 homes were vacant or abandoned on a single block. The reporter called it a "ghost street." Yesterday I found myself in the area. Other than an errant sofa, the street was completely empty, almost peaceful. I took a photo of every house on the north side of one block and then stitched them together. If you were to compare the current international housing crisis to a black hole sucking the equity out of our homes, this one-way street near the northern border of Detroit might just be the singularity: the point where the density of the problem defies anyone's ability to comprehend it. These homes started emptying in 2006.

Dying Detroit

A quick tour of Detroit proved quite shocking. Entire neighborhoods literally falling apart. The grand, majestic buildings from the golden age of Detroit empty and crumbling.

L'ENTITÉ: Détroit, USA: ville moribonde | Detroit | Scoop.it

Most of us are familiar with the lost city of Atlantis myth, but explore closer to home and you’ll find the lost city of Detroit. The city was once a boom town accounting for one of the largest collections of architecturally inspired buildings in America – impressive structures that still stand today, albeit gutted skeletons of their former selves.

"Ghosts of the Grande": Detroit's Abandoned Rock and Roll Palace | | Detroit | Scoop.it

When it opened in 1928, the Grande Ballroom was a popular venue for west Detroiters to enjoy jazz and dance to big band music. Then, four decades later, the Grande achieved immortal status in the annals of psychedelic rock history. Finally closing its doors in 1972, the abandoned ballroom has collapsed into decay and taken its place among Detroit’s incredible modern ruins. Now, Leo Early has catalogued the Grande Ballroom’s history, in the ultimate living memory of this important piece of Detroit history.
