2009 595 Supermono Strada | Phil Aynsley Photography

2009 595 Supermono Strada | Phil Aynsley Photography | Desmopro News | Scoop.it

Developed by noted Ducati Supermono tuner Alistair Wager, the Strada is the Supermono Ducati never built. Wager bought much of the factory's remaining parts stock and commissioned Pierobon, who built the original frames for Ducati, to construct a further 10. Of the 3 road-going bikes he's built to date, this (the 3rd) is the most like the originals. The main changes from the 1993 racers are the use of the Testastretta head, 104mm piston, 54mm throttle body with shower type injectors & starter motor (all from the 999R). The exhaust runs on the opposite side to the original. A one piece billet steel crank and balance mechanism are fitted (the later was cast originally). Green powder coated aluminium side cases replicate the magnesium originals. NGR slipper clutch. The carbon fibre body work is of modern, lighter type. The Ohlins rear shock was built up from NOS parts. The bike produces 75hp at the rear wheel and weighs 137kg wet. Cost £40,000 plus VAT. Photographed in New Zealand, 2012. Bill Irwin collection.

1998 Ducati 916 SPS with the 996 CC Motor
The Ducati 916 SPS was an Evolution of the legendary Ducati 916 and had an even punchier engine and a refined chassis. There were major updates to the Sport Production series for 1997 and the 916 SPS, still carrying the "916" title, featured a 996cc engine with new crankcases for World Superbike homologation. However there was more to the SPS than merely new crankcases and larger pistons, as 36mm inlet valves were used , together with new inlet and exhaust camshafts. The 916SPS for 1998 received not only the new graphics, but the lighter frame of the Corsa (thinner tubing and no longer constructed in AL450) and also new Showa forks to accept the revised front brake calipers.

Design of the Ducati 916 was a balance between function and form:

The single-sided swingarm was beautiful, but designed to make wheel changes faster during races

The underseat exhausts improve aerodynamic performance, and resultantly gave very clean lines.

Production Date:October of 1997

Ducati.net Ducati History Lesson | 4 Stroke Gas Powered Tiller | eBay Italy | Desmopro News | Scoop.it

In the "here's something you don't see every day" department we just got this shared with us and thought it was worth passing on as a Ducati history lesson.  During the VM period of Ducati company ownership, Ducati built auxiliarly motors and sold them to companies that used them in everything from lawn mowers to roto tillers, water pumps and more.  So while it's a bit of a stretch, this really IS a Ducati powered machine...
