For Students, Why the Question is More Important Than the Answer | MindShift

For Students, Why the Question is More Important Than the Answer | MindShift | Design and Technology - Enhancing Students Critical and Creative Thinking | Scoop.it

In a traditional classroom, the teacher is the center of attention, the owner of knowledge and information. Teachers often ask questions of their students to gauge comprehension, but it’s a passive model that relies on students to absorb information they need to reproduce on tests.

What would happen if the roles were flipped and students asked the questions?

Kaela Blacker's insight:

This blog explores the aspect of questioning in the classroom. It highlights the traditional aspect of questioning when the teacher is a facilitator and informer of knowledge. However, the blog further explores this concept and focuses on developing skills and strategies for students to become the questioners and begin to think critically and creatively in the classroom.

The blog explains that the right questions involve vigorous thinking of problems, investigations, processing open-ended and closed questions and prioritising. This is critical for developing design thinking. All educators will find this blog useful in considering aspects of teaching and learning around questioning, critical and creative thinking and curriculum - design and technology.

How do you teach creativity? If we look at creative thinking as the act of coming up with new ideas (new to the thinker, not necessarily to the world at large), what’s the best way to teach that...
Kaela Blacker's insight:

Creative Something is a blog developed around the teaching of creativity. This blog highlights interesting ideas and thoughts around the teaching of creativity. Consistantly the question of 'can you teach creativity?' surfaces in many educational discussions; the blog answers this well-known question. Interesting discussion is developed around the answer - "Yes!” You can teach creative thinking, but it’s not about teaching arts or expression necessarily, it’s more about teaching students to be curious and how to ask good questions."
