Designing service
One of the misunderstandings of these days is that a designer has an artist or artisan background. In that approach designers are idea generators, visualizers and prototypers.   That is not our point of view. Our adagium comes from the management writer Herbert Simon, who stated that "Everyone designs who devises courses of action  aimed at changing existing into preferred ones".  As stated by others, this version of design tends to abstraction and general expertise.   The focus of this blog is service and services. In our world  service is exchanged for service. All firms are service firms; all markets are centered on the exchange of service, and all economies and societies are service based. And just even government and other institutions are always exchanging services for services. But be sure, in this era of change there is a heavy focus also on concept generation, visualization and digital concept and prototypes.   Interested in designing services? In case you are interested to follow,  just do it. You can follow this me on Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter and my blog via email and RSS. It is up to you! In case you are interested to connect on linkedin, please feel free to do so.

How Technology and Social Media is Shaping 21st Century Retail

How Technology and Social Media is Shaping 21st Century Retail | Designing service | Scoop.it
As online sales are growing ten times faster than offline, technology is disrupting the retail environment. However, brick-and-mortar stores are still the vital drivers of sales and brand management: in the last few years, even a number of online-first brands like Rent the Runway, Bonobos, and Birchbox have expanded into retail. Bonobos even offers shoppers haircuts, free drinks, and in-store style consulting.

Top technology shifts that confront the business today

Top technology shifts that confront the business today | Designing service | Scoop.it

As I pointed out when the "big five" IT changes came down the pike three years ago (mobile, social, cloud, consumerization, and big data), which were seen as an unprecedented series of simultaneous changes at the time -- and in which we are still mostly in the early to mid-point stages of adoption in organizations today -- that the gap between what's achievable and what's needed might become untenable. Combine these in-process changes with limited budget for tackling strategic new capabilities like open APIs, Internet of Things, omnichannel engagement, machine learning, digital business models, rethought digital workplaces, and new models of IT such as bi/tri-modal, and you have a pretty hard to climb mountain of accumulated technical debt.

A very insightful diagram within another interesting article, it charts the multiple technologies that organizations are faced with and that can provide serious disruptions by lowering costs or enabling new business models.

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT?

It says "technology" and everyone thinks CIO but in reality those changes will impact every unit in the organization so every leader must be aware of them and have a plan to manage the accompanying change from a people and process standpoint.

Totally agree. #CX is NOT a project - it's about transformation. Driving the entire organization to know customers well and collaborating across business units to deliver the experience through desired channels. It won't work if everyone stays in their "own silo." Also love the Hyatt quote at the end!

Darcy Bevelacqua's curator insight, March 17, 2015 12:16 PM

the most important part of the business transformation is educating customer facing employees and enabling them to do a superior job by consolidating the information they need in one place. Your organization needs to know their customer's better than the competition and serve them utilizing that knowledge.

The customer landscape is shifting. It always does. This time, however, the door to Digital Darwinism has been kicked off its hinges. Technology and society are evolving faster than the ability to adapt. Consumers are becoming more connected. As such, they’re more informed. With information comes empowerment. And with new found connectedness and power, customer expectations begin to shatter current sales, marketing, and support models.

Eric_Determined / Eric Silverstein's curator insight, March 3, 2014 12:44 AM

"This generation’s digital tendencies means that marketers and brands need to step up their games in order to keep up and engage with them.

Millennials / Generation Y are 77 million strong in the U.S.—on par with Baby Boomers! —and make up 24 percent of the country’s population. And while many are still climbing the income ladder, this group’s size and age range highlights its long-term purchase power.

They are the first to come of age with cable TV, the Internet and cell phones, so technology is essentially baked into every Millennial’s DNA. In fact, when asked what makes their generation unique, Millennials ranked “Technology Use” first (24%), followed by “Music/Pop Culture” (11%) and “Liberal/Tolerant” (7%). In contrast, Boomers ranked “Work Ethic” as the most defining characteristic of their generation.

Given their fluency and comfort with technology, Millennials have more of a positive view of how technology is affecting their lives than any other generation. More than 74 percent feel that new technology makes their lives easier, and 54 percent feel new technology helps them be closer to their friends and family."

It's important to recognize the trends if your business expects to engage with them.

Me-Commerce and Retail's Future - Marketing Technology Blog

Me-Commerce and Retail's Future - Marketing Technology Blog | Designing service | Scoop.it

Retail is changing rapidly – both online and offline. Traditionally, retail establishments have always had low profit margins and high volume to produce the business results they needed to survive. We’re seeing rapid turnover in retail nowadays where technology is accelerating growth and increasing efficiency. Retail establishments that aren’t taking advantage are dying… but retailers that are leveraging technology are owning the market.+

Demographic shifts, the tech revolution, and the consumer demand for more personalized service are altering the roadmap for the customer decision journey.

McKinsey on Marketing lays out what they believe are the new Four P’s of Marketing:+

Pervasive – people shop wherever they are – whether it’s in bed with a tablet or while they’re in the middle of your showroom.Participatory – people are going to create and share ratings and reviews online of companies, products and services.Personalized – batch and blast traditional marketing is no longer working. Emotional connections through similar stories is driving conversions.Prescriptive – mobile applications, online research and social tools are helping consumers take control of their shopping through their own process.
