Technology for Creating Interactive and Dynamic Data Visualization | Designing New Learning Environment | Scoop.it

Here are libraries for plotting data on maps, frameworks for creating charts, graphs and diagrams and tools to simplify the handling of data.

Even if you’re not into programming, you’ll find applications that can be used without writing one single line of code. Many of these tools are relatively simple to use, and others are more advanced. . .

"The more educators give students choice, control, challenge, and collaborative opportunities, the more motivation and engagement are likely to rise. The enhancement of agency has been linked to a variety of important educational outcomes, including: elevated achievement levels in marginalized student populations, greater classroom participation, enhanced school reform efforts, better self-reflection and preparation for improvement in struggling students, and decreases in behavioral problems."

A picture is worth a thousand words or more

A picture is worth a thousand words or more | Designing New Learning Environment | Scoop.it

Enough talking people.  After skimming through forums, profiles, post etc. I started walking in circles around my house (literally). Somehow, I found myself looking at a wall where this art work is hanging from.

It totally hit me: this is how I’ve felt on the first week at the DNLE course. Does anyone can relate with this feeling?

Although I am not formally trained in the arts, I grew up in a home with great appreciation for the arts, among them music, dance and visual arts. So for me arts is a very relevant part in my life.

As an educator, it is only natural for me to relay on the arts when opening a class or starting a new lesson, and concluding and producing student's work.

I follow this basic criteria:  I never give away the art work's title;  rather I let students to either figure it out or come up with a new one. In addition,  I don't share the artist's name, school or time period so students can do further exploration and not have preconceived ideas on the artist's philosophy, intent or motivation in creating the art.

Let’s give it a try:

1.What name would you give to this piece?

2.How does it make you feel when you look at it?

3.What’s the message that you think that artist was trying to give?

4. When do you think this art work was created

In art, there are not right or wrong answers, just personal interpretations.

Feel free to answer to one or all questions. Lets see where does this little experiement take us!

Digital Literacy in the Primary Classroom

Digital Literacy in the Primary Classroom | Designing New Learning Environment | Scoop.it

Kevin McLaughlin writes a great post sharing: What is Digital Literacy

Futurelab, an organisation ‘committed to developing creative and innovative approaches to education, teaching and learning’, gives the following definition in its publication Digital Literacy across the curriculum:

To be digitally literate is to have access to a broad range of practices and cultural resources that you are able to apply to digital tools. It is the ability to make and share meaning in different modes and formats; to create, collaborate and communicate effectively and to understand how and when digital technologies can best be used to support these processes.

Explainer: How Many Megabytes Does Your Brain Hold?

Some days I wonder if my brain is going to be able to hold all the information we are storing and processing during the DNLE MOOC learning. So I did some searchin and the results are encouraging. Not so for South Korean President Lee Myung-bak who North Korea's state-run media has called  an "underwit with 2MB of knowledge."

"Most computational neuroscientists estimate human storage capacity somewhere between 10 and 100 terabytes. A terabyte is 1 million megabytes. And I wonder, does it matter how much information can hold or what we do we that information?
