The Semantic Web as made real with lightweight means such as LOD and Microforms means that an inclusive, broad knowledge of who we are may finally be at hand.

The Semantic web is the next big thing few understand. We will all understand it better in about a year, in the meantime designers need to start changing their design ethos. A design ethos is what sets the parameters of how designers create. When something is inside the boundary it gets include, outside not so much. This means designers are the necessary first wave on any and everything.

I like to watch designers like a hawk on a wire looking for dinner. When they move I move. Time for designers to start moving on semantic web.

Found these great questions on a site that was a tad too spammy to post the link here, but excellent questions for marketers and designers. Answering these six questions helps define if you get it or not:


* Always-on: Are you publishing at least daily?

* Editorial: Are you publishing content that is being shared?

* Independent: Do you own the platform delivering content?

* UX: Do you control all aspects of the user’s experience?

* Networked: Is content optimized for distribution?

* Measured: are Key Performance Indicators in place?

* Monetizable: Could your platform be someone else’s paid media?

User Experience UX Software Design 2013 Trends. Agree, big 2013 design trends include:

* Visual Marketing & Design Simplicity (lean content, lots of Infographics and other data visualizations).

* Content Marketing heavily influenced by mobile first and mobile's content constraints (speed, small, UI).

 

Would add bubbles about the size of "mobile first" for:
* Predictive Analytics.

* Real Time "read the cookie, fire the design" triggers.

* Move to branching business logic controlling design elements.

 

I may be the only champion of the freedom from design boxes movement. I just don't see UX and design functioning in such limited ways for much longer. Design is most impactful when it is relevant and we have enough persona and behavior information to "read the cookie, fire the design" now. 

Why aren't we?

I saw this same problem with the move from A/B to multivariate testing. MVP testing puts such a load on shifting THINKING and creative that adoption was slow. AI-like web design has the same problem. Once you create a branching path algorithm based on personas and behaviors you need LOTS of creative to support the move.  


Oh, this isn't the ONLY time I've been up on a soapbox all by my lonesome.

Gael de Talhouet, Global Digital Director at Henkel Hi Martin, Great pres. Now, you worked for P&G so you will understand my question : I perfectly get story telling for brands like Patagonia, but what can that mean for detergent or dishwashing brands ?

My Answer
Every brand must build an emotional connection. Tide does 'Loads of Hope' when they bring truckloads of washers and dryers to disaster relief areas so people can have clean clothes. When they do that the brand's dimensions include emotional connection and social relevance. If you think of Jim Stengel's book Grow you realize Tide is about PRIDE and so restoring pride after a disaster is perfectly aligned with the brand. Good question. Hope that helps.

Confessions of A Director of Ecommerce
I've spent the last few years trying to share as many "secrets" as I learned as a Director of Ecommerce. I don't run an ecommerce website anymore so can afford to be generous (lol). 

One of my pet peeves was directing the eye sight line of people in our images. I wanted the eyes pointed at something that mattered. People follow the eye line of those they are looking at. We had three tactics:

1. Gaze straight at visitor - promotes engagement.

2. Gaze directly at a Call To Action - promotes clicks.

3. Gaze at other people in same picture - promotes connection.

 

 We used #1 for pages with broad reach such as our homepage and category top-level pages. 

We used #2 in 4Q on the home page and bending the sight lines of any people in images on a product page works well (our product pages tended to make the PRODUCTS the heroes so few people). 

We used #3 when connection was one of the benefits of a product. If you sell wine, travel or family cars you may want to have pictures of people looking at each other. I would never ONLY have this picture on a webpage since it can make the viewer feel left out. 

The natural companion to the "connection" picture is a picture of a single person gazing out at the viewer. This says, "Yes, we see you, value your visit and want to be friends". 


Websites communicate SO MUCH in covert ways. Balancing what you say with one image such as the people looking at each other with another image to promote engagement is the game you play, the inside baseball "secrets" that separate teams capable of making millions in profits online from those who won't and wonder why :).M

In the guide you will find rational and fact-supported advice on how to choose, place and test image use inside web-based content as well as lots of extremely relevant examples of effective image use online.

1. Treat Customers Right - Genuinely Interact.
2. Don't Come On Too Strong - Have Respect.

3. Listen - Hear what customers are saying.

4. Continue - Offer ongoing 

5. Partners not customers - communication is 2 way.

6. Build Trust - No Surprises good or bad.

7. Be Transparent - HONESTY always wins in the end. 

8. Keep Your Promises & Only make keepable ones.

9. Customer is always RIGHT.

10. Say THANK YOU and be KIND.

These are great and I would add:

1. Know YOURSELF, be consistent and true.
2. Have FUN (fun is contagious).

3. LOVE what you do (passion is contagious).

4. LOVE who you do it with (or fake it until you make it).

5. Stay Calm, Carry On

6. Change the World

7. Share and then SHARE some More.

8. Align your company to Stengel's Brand Ideals.

9. LISTEN more than you TALK.

10. Curate more than you Create.

 

 Do any five of these consistenly and like, trust and respect may just turn to LOVE.

Listening to the experts my friend Phil Buckley (@1918) lined up via Skype for his SEORaleigh session on "Technical SEO" I wrote this note:

RESPONSIVE Design Done Wrong KILLS SEO.

Didn't know how many new SEO pitfalls responsive brings. It figures, as much as Google says they want responsive the nature of a spider crawl is it must have SOMETHING to crawl.

The many hidden SEO traps of responsive design got me to write another large note:

RESPONSIVE projects MUST have a SEO Champion.

The "SEO Champion" is there for one reason, to protect the content's ability to get into a search engine. Without such a watchdog Responsive could crater a website existing rankings and make it hard to get new ones.

Content must work for VISITORS and SPIDERS was the last note I made.
