Stephen Hawking says there are no black holes

Stephen Hawking says there are no black holes | Design, Photography, and Creativity | Scoop.it

"The absence of event horizons mean that there are no black holes — in the sense of regimes from which light can't escape to infinity," writes Hawking, in a new paper. In other words, the notion that black holes have an event horizon, which prevents anything from escaping ever, is wrong.

In a new paper, Hawking says that one of the defining features of black holes -- the complete inability of even light to escape -- may not hold true.

Bulletproof Decorating: Upholstery That Stands Up to Anything

Bulletproof Decorating: Upholstery That Stands Up to Anything | Design, Photography, and Creativity | Scoop.it

The Flintstones had it easy. When all your furniture is made of rock, you never have to worry about food spills or the pet dinosaur leaving a calling card on the couch.

While few of us would be willing to trade our plush upholstery for a granite sofa, you can still get an interior that’s fairly bulletproof if you choose the right fabric. “Technology has really helped a lot,” says Lesli Ann Cone, a designer and fabric rep who owns A & D Studios in Washington. Today’s engineered textiles look increasingly like their natural counterparts, Cone says, but can withstand wear and tear much better. And many natural fabrics are nearly as durable. It all depends on what you choose.

Tried And Tested: Can You Train Yourself To Be Happy?

Tried And Tested: Can You Train Yourself To Be Happy? | Design, Photography, and Creativity | Scoop.it

"We tend to define our lives by the pursuit of happiness. Will my job make me happy? Will my partner make me happy? If I have more money, will this make me happy?"

But we fail to realise that happiness is not some nirvana we can only access when all our desires fall into place. Neuroscience dictates that 40% of our personal happiness is absolutely in our control, 10% is due to personal circumstance and 50% is in our genes.

The creators of the 'Action for Happiness' movement, along with the founders of behavioural change website 'Do Something Different' passionately believe in this research and want to teach others how to take this control into our own hands.
