Thanksgiving: Supermarkets And Fair Food

Thanksgiving: Supermarkets And Fair Food | Design in Education | Scoop.it

With the Thanksgiving holiday less than a week away, many schools around the country enter into conversations with their students about being grateful for what they have, showing gratitude to others, and starting food drives for the less fortunate. The heightened awareness, while noble, should be an ongoing conversation about empathy year round, and not slotted into a month where we overindulge with too much food.

So this year, we chose to talk to our students about who supplies their food. We did not mean which grocery store. We posed the question: What does it mean "from farm to table"? Kids have mixed messages about farm life from rosy images in picture books, nostalgic views in commercials, or pumpkin picking during October in contrived environments for entertainment. We wanted them to know more about the people who supply fresh food to markets and manufacturers.

An Animation Of Easter Chocolate - Teaching Media, Finance, & Global Trade

An Animation Of Easter Chocolate - Teaching Media, Finance, & Global Trade | Design in Education | Scoop.it

If you're like us, you indulged during this past week of spring vacation with some welcome sun and possibly some holiday candy. If you're also like us, you're now returning to a classroom full of restless students who can see the end of the school year in sight.

Luckily, the animation wizards at NBC News have once again offered up a timely treat to engage students' eyes (and taste buds) on their first morning back from break. The motion graphic, "The Business Behind Chocolate Easter Eggs," offers a surprisingly rich educational tour in just under a minute and a half. The video is not even really about Easter, so it is worthy of showing to any diverse classroom.

Valentine's Day - Hitting The Sweet Spots

Valentine's Day - Hitting The Sweet Spots | Design in Education | Scoop.it

If you’re like us, you may be finding that the polar vortex has wreaked havoc on classes from the multiple snow-day closures. The looming mid-winter break isn’t making things any easier with the constant struggle to keep kids focused on learning. Add Valentine’s Day into the mix on top of everything else, and things get complicated.

Well, take heart. While we don’t typically spend too much time on Valentine’s Day as a special holiday, we know our kids enjoy it. We suppose that’s why we are always looking to find new material each year to bring them into focus during the heart of winter.

Innovation Design In Education - ASIDE: Infographic Holiday Cards As Data Visualization

Innovation Design In Education - ASIDE: Infographic Holiday Cards As Data Visualization | Design in Education | Scoop.it

Recently, our friend and colleague, Gina Sipley (@GSipley), forwarded an “infographic holiday card” she received. We then did a little digging. To our surprise, it turns out that using infographics to report on the happenings of the past year have been trendy for quite sometime. Who knew that data visualization had hit the holiday card market?

Innovation Design In Education - ASIDE: Visualizing Dr. King's "I Have A Dream" Speech

Innovation Design In Education - ASIDE: Visualizing Dr. King's "I Have A Dream" Speech | Design in Education | Scoop.it

Perhaps one of the most powerful speeches in American history is Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream" speech made on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., in 1963. We recently came across a post from FastCoDesign that captures sections of the speech as infographics to demonstrate what makes this speech so brilliant. The original analysis was done by Nancy Duarte who created an interactive visualization that analyzes the careful selection of words that Dr. King chose. To do this, Duarte used a bar graph to overlay blocks of text to map out his oration. The video speaks for itself, and it makes a perfect teaching tool for students in exacting the nuances of language, metaphor and history.

Financial Literacy, The Economy, And Holiday Shopping

Financial Literacy, The Economy, And Holiday Shopping | Design in Education | Scoop.it

We received a lot of questions from our students about "Black Friday" this fall. It seems the play up to the annual start of the holiday shopping frenzy grows earlier with each passing year. If your students are like ours, many did not understand the hype around this day, how it affects the economy, or for that matter, why it is so important to the bottom line of so many companies.

Veterans Day: What We Don't See

Veterans Day: What We Don't See | Design in Education | Scoop.it

Veterans Day infographics provide a wide range of data to help us discuss this holiday with our students, and we've written a number of posts to remember the brave men and women who served so valiantly to protect our freedoms. But perhaps the infographic above from the American Psychiatric Association is the most powerful to cross our path. It's not about the numbers of veterans from different wars, or the history of the day; instead, it represents the staggering statistics about the wounds that plague the minds of so many of our veterans.

Not Irish, Snake Charmer, Or Saint - St. Patrick's Day Resources | Design in Education | Scoop.it

In the spirit of St. Patrick's Day, many of us will don green even if we are not Irish. The Irish diaspora around the world makes it hard not to feel a little Irish on March 17. In fact, the Irish population in the United States is seven times larger than that of Ireland, and approximate 71 million live outside of the country.

New Year’s Resolutions: Some Visuals For Inspiration, Motivation, And Data

New Year’s Resolutions: Some Visuals For Inspiration, Motivation, And Data | Design in Education | Scoop.it

With the New Year arriving in less than 48 hours, people all over the world are thinking about making resolutions for the coming year.

According to Wikipedia, a New Year’s resolution is a secular tradition, most common in the West, when a person makes a promise to change something starting on the first of the year. It does have historical connections, and it is not uncommon to reflect on self-improvement.

To that end, we gathered some information about the topic to see what types of ideas we could use with our students during the first, short week of school. From Buzzfeed, we came across the post "14 Quotes To Inspire Your New Year’s Resolutions For 2014." This clever mix of historical figures garbed in festive holiday regalia would definitely make for a good, philosophical discussion in any history or English class.

Veterans Day: Resources To Embrace, Engage, And Educate

Veterans Day: Resources To Embrace, Engage, And Educate | Design in Education | Scoop.it

We try to instill the patriotic spirit in our students for every national holiday. Many in our school community have family who served in World War II, the Korean War, and in Vietnam, and a few have family and friends who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. We’ve written about Veterans Day and service to the community; however, the following resources bring the reality of the wars in the Middle East closer to home.

With all the violence in the world today and the daily barrage of recent protests in Egypt and Brazil, we should count our stars and stripes that we can go about our routines this 4th of July. To be sure, there will be plenty of barbeques, shopping, and fireworks, but we should take the time to reflect on our freedom and independence.

Innovation Design In Education - ASIDE: Veterans Day - Infographics About Those Who Serve

Innovation Design In Education - ASIDE: Veterans Day - Infographics About Those Who Serve | Design in Education | Scoop.it

Sometimes when we get caught up in the midst of the chaos from the loss of electricity and Internet access, we forget that there are others who faced far more: our veterans of foreign wars. "All I want is a hot shower and a cup of coffee" takes on a new meaning if you fought in deserts, jungles, and mountains. We begin to realize our inconveniences are small in comparison to those who served for months or years in harm's way, defending our nation.

Innovation Design In Education - ASIDE: Autumnal Infographics As Teachable Moments

Innovation Design In Education - ASIDE: Autumnal Infographics As Teachable Moments | Design in Education | Scoop.it

It's only fitting that we share some infographics for the change of seasons. After all, autumn does affect just about every aspect of our daily routines, from the shorter day to the series of holidays beginning with Halloween to the New Year. The infographics for the fall season reflect this pattern, from what we buy to where and when to see the best fall foliage.

Why not take advantage of these data-rich delights with all their living color to teach a little autumn trivia, devise a few math problems, or map out a geographic trail across the United States for the best leaves? There is plenty of information to go around, and it might even spur a debate or two in comparing the details. No matter what your discipline, mini lessons abound from these eye-catching displays of words, pictures and numbers. Here are just a few of our favorites.
