Design Museum Holon | Yaacov Kaufman - Stools

Design Museum Holon | Yaacov Kaufman - Stools | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

Holon | 25.03.2015 - 06.06.2015

"The exhibition is presenting about 450 objects created in Studio Yaacov Kaufman in the past eight years. The stools are presented as a complete and continuous course of action, resembling their own development process. At first glance they seem to be replicated mutations of a small piece of furniture - like the animation produced when flipping a flip book. A second, more focused look reveals a diverse, continuously developing, non-hierarchical system of examinations that has no beginning or end, edges or margins. And if they did not have to leave the studio, the stools would continue to fill the small space in Jaffa until it burst at the seams."

Centre Pompidou | Le Corbusier - Measures of Man

Centre Pompidou | Le Corbusier - Measures of Man | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

Paris | 29.04.2015 - 03.08.2015

"The Centre Pompidou is devoting a completely new retrospective, featuring some three hundred works, to the output of Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, aka Le Corbusier.
Not only a visionary architect, urban planner and theorist of modernity, but also a painter and sculptor, Le Corbusier made a profound impression on the 20th century in dramatically changing architecture and the way it is «inhabited». His international career flourished long before globalisation made its appearance.
Adopting a decidedly innovative approach, the Centre Pompidou takes a fresh look at the output of this major figure in modernity through the proportions of the human body, which Le Corbusier considered essential as a universal principle. For the architect, this «measurement of man» defined all aspects of architecture and spatial composition."

Calais | 18.04.2015 - 31.08.2015

"The main characteristics of this fashion designer’s art were praised from his first Parisian collection in 1937 - precision, perfectionism, masterful cuts, a sense of both bright and delicate colours which differed from those used in France at the time, and a certain theatrality which confirmed his "Spanishness".
With almost 75 outfits, accessories (hats, gloves, shoes) as well as photographs and workshop sketches, the exhibition provides a vast panorama of the designer’s work and traces the history of Balenciaga and lace."

Museum für Gestaltung Schaudepot | Swiss Style - International Graphic Design

Museum für Gestaltung Schaudepot | Swiss Style - International Graphic Design | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

Zürich | 17.04.2015 - 26.07.2015

"Plain, functional graphic design is highly topical. Amidst the visual opulence surrounding us today precisely condensed posters or the carefully composed systems of symbols used in airports seem spectacular. Back in the 1960s pioneering achievements of this kind formed the basis for the international success of Swiss graphics. With founding fathers such as Josef Müller-Brockmann, Karl Gerstner or Armin Hofmann, reduced design under the name “Swiss Style” developed into a movement that pointed the way to the future. Designers like Massimo Vignelli or Wim Crouwel established the minimalist aesthetic worldwide. The exhibition traces the successful spread of “Swiss Style” and confirms its relevance with a selection of contemporary works, for instance with a critical intervention of "Experimental Jetset", an Amsterdam-based trio of graphic designers."

"Humankind has devised conceptual tools that make it possible to measure, convey information about, and manipulate all things in the natural environment that are difficult to manage as they are -- tangible things, air, water, light, sound. Those tools are units. Designs that we encounter in our everyday lives are likewise made possible because of the existence of numerous units: meters for the length, grams for the weight, and seconds for the time and many more. They constitute communication tools that can be shared among people of cultures throughout the world. On the other hand there are unique systems of units which have been rooted to the diverse society and cultures as well."

Haus der Kunst | David Adjaye: Form, Heft, Material | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

Munich | 30.01.2015 - 31.05.2015

"The heterogeneous work of architect David Adjaye (b. 1966) comprises approximately 50 built projects - from luxury shops and museums to libraries and social housing. [...]

Adjaye's private structures play with the contrast between hermetically sealed fronts and unexpectedly generous openings in the back, thereby accommodating the owners' need for a private retreat. In contrast, as open and permeable structures, his public buildings are socially effective architecture. Unlike structures of pure functionalism and iconic monumentality, they approach their users rather than patronizing them."

The Art Institute of Chicago | Ireland: Crossroads of Art and Design, 1690–1840

The Art Institute of Chicago | Ireland: Crossroads of Art and Design, 1690–1840 | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

Chicago | 17.03.2015 - 07.06.2015

"Presenting over 300 objects drawn from public and private collections across North America—as well as the Art Institute’s own important collection of Irish decorative and fine arts—this exhibition is the first to explore the rich and complex art and culture of Ireland during the long 18th century. The seeds for the exhibition were first planted by historian Desmond Fitzgerald, 29th Knight of Glin, who in his 2007 book, Irish Furniture, outlined his vision for “a major exhibition on Ireland’s decorative arts of the 18th century, which would . . . waken up the world to a staggering array of art that was manufactured in Ireland during this period.” Surprisingly, such an exhibition has never before been undertaken on either side of the Atlantic. Ireland: Crossroads of Art and Design, 1690–1840 expands on the Knight of Glin’s vision to also include paintings, sculpture, and architecture. Irish book bindings, ceramics, glass, furniture, metalwork, musical instruments, and textiles are also featured in a series of “Made in Ireland” galleries highlighting Dublin, Cork, Belfast, and Waterford as centers of production."

New York | 28.04.2015 - 27.09.2015

"Pathmakers: Women in Art, Craft and Design, Midcentury and Today considers the important contributions of women to modernism in postwar visual culture. In the 1950s and 60s, an era when painting, sculpture, and architecture were dominated by men, women had considerable impact in alternative materials such as textiles, ceramics, and metals. Largely unexamined in major art historical surveys, either due to their gender or choice of materials, these pioneering women achieved success and international recognition, establishing a model of professional identity for future generations of women."

Southfield | 17.04.2015 - 02.05.2015

"[...] the first comprehensive exhibition to offer a look inside the design studios of Detroit’s automakers from 1946 to 1973 [...]. In an effort to gain market share in the post-World War II era, Detroit-based automakers hired university-trained artists to produce the most visually appealing cars. This was a time when styling and design were highly valued by automakers, and artists had the opportunity to shape the industry and change the look of the entire country. What makes this exhibition particularly remarkable is that the car company policies mandated preliminary artwork to be destroyed when the final designs were selected for production, so the vast majority of this artwork has disappeared."

Montreal | 12.03.2015 - 17.05.2015

"The work of Ábalos & Herreros is a conscious mirror of architecture and time. Though their practice started in the mid-eighties, it was ultimately the nineties that gave the work its shape and its raison d’être. More than any other firm, Ábalos & Herreros excelled in pragmatic reproduction. With the conviction that architecture as a cultural practice is successful only when it reflects the world it inhabits, they became masters of emulation. Their practice tackled the problems of production (of culture) through reproduction (of the world)."

Cooper Hewitt - Smithsonian Design Museum | Beautiful Users | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

New York | 12.12.2014 - 19.04.2015

"This exhibition looks at how design has become more and more user-focused over the past fifty years, and how this shift has affected the daily lives of people everywhere. When designers are creating products or spaces or technologies, they ask how people—users—will eventually engage with their designs. Depending on the user’s unique traits (including their size, abilities, occupation, age, and culture, among other things), designers can adapt their creations to fit users’ needs and behavior. [...] Installed in our first-floor Design Process Galleries, Beautiful Users features nearly 120 objects from Cooper Hewitt’s collection and private lenders that illustrate the evolution of “user-centered design”—from the mid–20th-century work of Henry Dreyfuss (who coined the phrase “designing for people”) to the complex systems and services that today’s designers
are developing."

Vitra Design Museum | Architecture of Independence. African Modernism

Vitra Design Museum | Architecture of Independence. African Modernism | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

Weil am Rhein | 20.02.2015 - 31.05.2015

"When many countries in Central and Sub-Saharan Africa gained their independence in the 1960s, experimental and futuristic architecture became a principal means by which the young nations expressed their national identities. The exhibition in the Vitra Design Museum Gallery is one of the first presentations of this remarkable period of more recent architectural history. This exhibition was researched and curated by architect and author Manuel Herz, with a substantial contribution by photographer Iwan Baan.
The exhibition documents more than 80 buildings in five countries; Kenya, Côte d’Ivoire, Zambia, Ghana and Senegal. The often heroic and daring designs of parliament buildings, central banks, stadiums, conference centers, universities and independence memorials mirror the forward-looking spirit that was dominant in these countries at the time. However, this architecture also represents the difficulties, contradictions and dilemmas that the young nations experienced in their independence process, as building designs and architects were often imported from foreign countries, if not from one of the former colonial powers."
