MAK Austrian Museum of Applied Arts / Contemporary Art | Nomadic Furniture 3.0 New Liberated Living

MAK Austrian Museum of Applied Arts / Contemporary Art | Nomadic Furniture 3.0 New Liberated Living | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

Vienna | 12.06.2013 - 06.10.2013

"One would be hard-pressed to find a single area of our everyday lives and material culture that has not been swept up in the “participatory revolution” of the past several years. With the do-it-yourself movement now an omnipresent phenomenon, the design field’s current development is increasingly characterized by the fusion of production and consumption. The problematic issues raised by this “prosumer culture” range from a perceived need to decentralize and democratize goods production to both the criticism of mass consumption and the theme of sustainability in light of ongoing resource depletion.

(...)

The exhibition NOMADIC FURNITURE 3.0 will for the first time bundle and examine the omnipresent do-it-yourself movement’s contemporary development with specific regard to the design of furniture and residential spaces. Here, the prolonged constant increase in demand for plans showing how to build furniture and furnishing elements represents an opportunity to investigate present-day processes by way of a historical retrospective."

Alvar Aalto Museum | Children’s Scale

Alvar Aalto Museum | Children’s Scale | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

Jyväskylä | 10.02.2017 - 21.05.2017

"For the first time ever, the public has a chance to see an extensive collection exhibition of the virtuoso furniture and furnishing designs for children made by Aino Aalto and Artek. [...] Aino Aalto exhibited her first pieces of children’s furniture in 1929 and, beginning in the next decade, under Aalto’s guidance Artek designed the interiors for a large number of kindergartens and child health centres. The work produced by Aalto and her workmate, the interior architect Maija Heikinheimo, has strong ties to the modern welfare society and to the development of Finnish childcare. The exhibition includes interiors made for kindergartens, libraries and child health centres, along with furniture designed for them. To entertain our child visitors, some new pieces of children’s furniture have been built following Artek’s working drawings, and children will have a chance to try them out and explore them directly."

"The exhibition ‘Gispen Specials – The Customer is Always Right’ focuses on the unknown Gispen. Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen has selected fifty special editions and objects produced in limited numbers. These designs show the company’s quality and flexibility, which have made Dutch design famous throughout the world. Almost without exception, the specials resulted from the specific brief of a client who was unable to find what they wanted in Gispen’s (or other companies’) standard range."

Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe | Protect - Promote - Provoking Curiosity. Book Covers | design exhibitions | Scoop.it
Hamburg | 11.11.2016 - 26.02.2017
"For 550 years, books have been being printed – the first 400 years without real covers. In contrast to the title page, which has always been highlighted, decorated covers were a novelty. [...] Even in times of e-books and online-trade, printed books with their illustrated covers score with a range and quality like seldom before. In its graphic-hallway, the MKG shows a selection of about 400 book covers from their beginnings until today."

Fashion Institute of Technology | Paris Refashioned, 1957-1968

Fashion Institute of Technology | Paris Refashioned, 1957-1968 | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

New York | 10.02.2017 - 15.04.2017

"Paris Refashioned, 1957-1968 highlights one of the most groundbreaking time periods in fashion history. While many books and exhibitions about this era position London as the center of innovative, youth-oriented design, this limited perspective overlooks the significant role that Paris continued to play in the fashion industry. Paris Refashioned, 1957-1968 examines the combined influence of French haute couture, ready-to-wear, and popular culture during this era, with particular emphasis on how fashion was perceived and promoted by the American fashion press."

But what are the true facts behind take-away containers that say they are biodegradable and party cutlery made from so-called natural materials? It is a large, confusing area and making products out of these materials is a task for the future."

Carnegie Museum of Art | Iris van Herpen: Transforming Fashion | design exhibitions | Scoop.it
Pittsburg | 04.02.2017 - 01.05.2017
"Fashion designer Iris van Herpen (Dutch, b. 1984) marries precision and meticulous handcraft, inventive technological solutions, and a striking, futuristic aesthetic. [...] Pittsburgh is a city of creative makers and fabricators, a center of technology and robotics, and a supportive place for artists. A growing tech sector, and continued reckoning with its industrial past uniquely positions the city to respond to van Herpen’s designs, which are inspired by neuroscience and microbes, science fiction and the environment. She leans on new materials to do what traditional materials don’t, and employs new techniques to wring seemingly impossible forms out of traditional fabrics and common objects."

Los Angeles | 12.02.2017 - 18.06.2017
"The first comprehensive retrospective of the work of László Moholy-Nagy (1895–1946) in the United States in nearly 50 years, this long overdue presentation reveals a utopian artist who believed that art could work hand-in-hand with technology for the betterment of humanity. Moholy-Nagy: Future Present examines the career of this pioneering painter, photographer, sculptor, and filmmaker as well as graphic, exhibition, and stage designer, who was also an influential teacher at the Bauhaus, a prolific writer, and later the founder of Chicago’s Institute of Design. The exhibition includes more than 250 works in all media from public and private collections across Europe and the United States, some of which have never before been shown publicly in the U.S. Also on display is a large-scale installation, the Room of the Present, a contemporary construction of an exhibition space originally conceived by Moholy-Nagy in 1930."

Legion of Honor | Historic Futures: Artists Reinvent the Book

Legion of Honor | Historic Futures: Artists Reinvent the Book | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

San Francisco | 22.10.2016 - 26.02.2017

"The lineage of the artist’s book descends from the common impulse to use pictures to tell stories. This connection has held constant from Paleolithic cave paintings onward, through the emergence of the artist’s book as a recognized creative medium in the twentieth century. Historically, artists have used the familiar elements of the book form—paper, printing, binding—as opportunities for expression and reinvention, sometimes challenging our notion of what a book can be. Historic Futures features examples documenting key moments in the evolution of the artist’s book from the late 1700s to today."

Rotterdam | 27.01.2017 - 25.06.2017

"What determines a product’s appeal, function and identity? Increasingly it is the finish that designers employ not only to beautify a product, but also to strengthen, preserve or disguise it. The last layer can simulate ageing, form an impenetrable shell or function as a convincing imitation of craftsmanship. Designing the Surface, an exhibition where the final topcoat targets the senses, investigates a compendium of artefacts over five sets: lustre, patina, faux, teflon and agency."
