National Museum of Modern Art | Marcel Breuer's Furniture: Improvement for good | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

Tokyo | 03.03.2017 - 07.05.2017

"Focusing on differences between various versions of Breuer’s furniture design, this exhibition presents forty pieces from collections in Japan and abroad. Although he extended his creative sphere beyond furniture to architecture after the war, the essence of his design is condensed into his furniture. We hope that this show offers an opportunity to again appreciate Breuer’s design that points to the possibility for diverse interpretations of the phrase “modern design,” and to receive his message to us living in the twenty-first century."

Vitra Design Museum | Dieter Rams. Modular World | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

Weil am Rhein | 18.11.2016 - 12.03.2017

"»Dieter Rams: Modular World« is the first exhibition to put a primary focus on Rams’ furniture designs, demonstrating how closely they are linked to his design philosophy. Rams summarised their essential characteristics – simplicity, honesty, timelessness – in his »Ten Principles for Good Design«, which he began to formulate in the 1970s. In one of them he states: »Good design is long-lasting. It avoids being fashionable and therefore never appears antiquated. Unlike fashionable design, it lasts many years – even in today’s throwaway society.« The starting point for these deliberations was a fundamental criticism of consumerism, which motived Rams to articulate new goals for the practise of design – long before sustainability became a buzzword."

Museu Moto Barcelona | Scooters, un segle de moto urbana | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

Barcelona | 17.03.2016 - 03.2017

"Massey began working at CCA in 1957, and upon his appointment as head of design in 1964 he formed a research arm, the Center for Advanced Research in Design (CARD). The work of CARD extended beyond the traditional work of CCA to projects such as the Chicago Civic Poster campaign. Supported fully by Paepcke, this unusual arrangement enabled great creativity and innovation within a corporate structure. The portfolio of Massey’s work recently acquired by the Art Institute of Chicago demonstrates the designer’s ingenuity across a range of projects."

Jyväskylä | 10.02.2017 - 21.05.2017

"For the first time ever, the public has a chance to see an extensive collection exhibition of the virtuoso furniture and furnishing designs for children made by Aino Aalto and Artek. [...] Aino Aalto exhibited her first pieces of children’s furniture in 1929 and, beginning in the next decade, under Aalto’s guidance Artek designed the interiors for a large number of kindergartens and child health centres. The work produced by Aalto and her workmate, the interior architect Maija Heikinheimo, has strong ties to the modern welfare society and to the development of Finnish childcare. The exhibition includes interiors made for kindergartens, libraries and child health centres, along with furniture designed for them. To entertain our child visitors, some new pieces of children’s furniture have been built following Artek’s working drawings, and children will have a chance to try them out and explore them directly."

Die Neue Sammlung | Tone Vigeland. Jewelry - Object - Sculpture | design exhibitions | Scoop.it
Munich | 11.03.2017 - 11.06.2017
"With their flowing shapes Tone Vigeland’s pieces generally fit snugly despite being made of metal – steel, silver and gold. Through contact with the skin the metal regains its play with the light, and lent and dreamt of metallic color variations. Every piece becomes individualized through virtue of being worn. Though they stand out for their size and volume, the objects consist of an incredibly large number of tiny hand worked parts – minute pipes twisted from silver wire, precisely cut rectangular and round discs or tiny pellets and rings – so cleverly joined together as to be invisible to the naked eye. Tone Vigeland’s art on the body appears simultaneously modern and archaic."

The exhibition is an attempt at showing mutual Polish‑Norwegian correlations and affinities in design from the last fifteen years. The issue is illustrated by specific works of Polish and Norwegian designers, already awarded and recognized in the world or most recent ones. New York | 07.03.2017 - 01.04.2017
"This exhibition, Adrian: Hollywood and Beyond, highlights both Adrian’s ready-to-wear and his costumes, while focusing on his innovative use of textiles. Beginning during his Hollywood days, fabric was central to Adrian’s aesthetic. He employed an arsenal of techniques — such as appliqué, piecing, mitering, pleating, and draping — to build dynamic garments in which the materials are as celebrated as they are integral to the design. Adrian worked with and endorsed different textile manufacturers throughout his career. Indeed, his final collection in 1952 was dedicated to the “beauty” and “integrity of fabric.”"

The exhibition is based around four themes – crafts, fashion, bridal, and stage. Lars Wallin has personally selected works that mean a lot to him and in addition to ready-made garments, visitors can see sketches, toiles, jewellery, and even feel the fabrics. The idea behind this interaction is to create an understanding of the craft and design process, and to provide an insight into the work done within the studio."

Legion of Honor | Historic Futures: Artists Reinvent the Book | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

San Francisco | 22.10.2016 - 26.02.2017

"The lineage of the artist’s book descends from the common impulse to use pictures to tell stories. This connection has held constant from Paleolithic cave paintings onward, through the emergence of the artist’s book as a recognized creative medium in the twentieth century. Historically, artists have used the familiar elements of the book form—paper, printing, binding—as opportunities for expression and reinvention, sometimes challenging our notion of what a book can be. Historic Futures features examples documenting key moments in the evolution of the artist’s book from the late 1700s to today."
