Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe | Inside Out. Insights into Fashion

Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe | Inside Out. Insights into Fashion | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

Hamburg | 07.06.2013 - 13.10.2013

"A coat with four sleeves, a dress like a snake pit, suits printed to look like bare skin or a red-brick wall – the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg (MKG) is showing fashion which has first and foremost the character of a performance and is not always wearable. With some 55 models by iconic designers such as Rei Kawakubo, Martin Margiela, Alba d’Urbano or Iris van Herpen and video clips, the exhibition directs the observer to fashion which turns garments inside out and breaks up their surfaces. The variations on this theme which the 30 or so designers on show create are multifarious: the designs alienate the human silhouette like the 2D dresses of the Japanese avant-garde label Comme des Garçons, which overextend the normal dimensions of the body with seemingly huge geometrical dresses."

Museum Bellerive | Say it with Flowers

Museum Bellerive | Say it with Flowers | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

Zürich | 21.11.2014 - 29.03.2015

"The Museum Bellerive is showcasing the appeal of flowers as a decorative motif. Some 300 objects of glass art, furniture, ceramics, textiles and graphic design offer a wide range of insights into the collections of the Museum für Gestaltung. The exhibition reveals the personal styles of important designers as well as the preferences of various periods for certain flowers. The profound millefleur patterns of William Morris’s wallpapers and the lilies and thistles of Emile Gallé’s vases were popular in the Belle Époque. While in the 1970s people preferred eye-catching daises, today fine silks from the company Fabric Frontline feature detailed botanical reproductions."

Freer and Sackler | Nasta‛liq: The Genius of Persian Calligraphy

Freer and Sackler | Nasta‛liq: The Genius of Persian Calligraphy | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

Washington DC | 13.03.2014 - 03.05.2015

"Nasta‛liq: The Genius of Persian Calligraphy is the first exhibition of its kind to focus on nasta‛liq, a calligraphic script that developed in the fourteenth century in Iran and remains one of the most expressive forms of aesthetic refinement in Persian culture to this day. More than twenty works ranging in date from 1400 to 1600, the height of nasta‛liq’s development, tell the story of the script’s transformation from a simple conveyer of the written word to an artistic form of its own. The narrative thread emphasizes the achievements of four of the greatest master calligraphers—Mir Ali Tabrizi, Sultan Ali Mashhadi, Mir Ali Haravi, and Mir Imad Hasani—whose manuscripts and individual folios are still appreciated not only for their content but also for their technical virtuosity and visual quality."

Gemeentemuseum | Romantic fashions | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

The Hague | until 22.03.2015

"Rustling silk, breathtaking embroidery, frills and flounces, vast crinolines. Sharply tailored suits for dandies and elegant ball gowns for ladies. This major 19th-century fashion exhibition at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag features costumes from the time of Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, Eline Vere and Downton Abbey. In addition to entire costumes in all their glory, the show will include glamorous accessories, tightly laced corsets and original fashion prints and photographs. With the help of the Prince Bernhard Culture Fund, many items have been restored especially for the occasion and will be on show to the public for the very first time. The inclusion of contemporary creations shows how the 19th century still influences life today, as modern designers continue to draw inspiration from its forms, silhouettes and techniques. Famous examples include the magnificent embroidery of Jan Taminiau, the dandyism of Vivienne Westwood, and the (often dark) romanticism of Jean Paul Gaultier and Edwin Oudshoorn. "

Musée Matisse | To Weave Matisse | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

Le Cateau-Cambrésis | 15.11.2014 - 08.03.2015

"The exposure “To weave Matisse” questions the border of painting and decorative arts in the work of Henri Matisse (1869-1954). In 1946, when the manufacture of the Goblins orders from Matisse a tapestry, the artist hesitates then agrees to take up the challenge, that “to leave manufacture the 18th century”. Bathed in the profusion of the colors and the matters, the artist, born in a family from tisserands in Cateau-Cambrésis, grew in the middle of the embroidered flowers and of the printed arabesques of the fabrics which it collects all his life during. Of its travel to Morocco, in Oceania and to Tahiti, Matisse brings back hangings, carpets, typed and other fabrics, which are as many sources of inspiration from which it draws a decorative vocabulary and geometrical reasons. Museum für Gestaltung | Poster Rhythm. Music Posters from Zurich | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

Zürich | 04.03.2015 - 17.05.2015

"Graphic design and music form a legendary team: many designers themselves performed as musicians on the stage, while others found fulfillment as concert promoters. The rhythm and dynamics of very different musical styles are to be found in their posters that move with sovereign ease between art and graphics, in the process often reinterpreting the laws of the medium. Around the city the subversive potential of these music graphics offers an exciting counterpoint to mainstream concert posters and tells about a music culture of generally short-lived clubs and subculture locations."

Cincinnati | 28.02.2015 - 24.05.2015

"Known by most for designing the topless bathing suit in 1964, Rudi Gernreich was one of the most original and prophetic fashion designers of the twentieth century. His minimalist knit garments, executed in psychedelic colors and geometric patterns, are visually striking. But Gernreich’s clothes were more than fashion. They were intended to free women’s bodies. All the garments in the exhibition are on loan from Peggy Moffitt, the designer’s primary model and muse. The exhibition includes photographs of Moffitt in Gernreich’s designs and the first fashion video."

[...] Rand’s influence was extended by students he taught at Yale University. His visually stimulating, yet problem-solving, approach to graphic design attracted devoted admirers during his own lifetime and he remains influential today.

"Design is an activity that has become fully part of our lives. We live in a world that is shaped largely by human effort and in which design is so present that it often becomes invisible until it ceases to work. However, design enables us to constantly, consistently, solve problems that generate great social impact. In this show, we focus on design that is expressly aimed at improving the lives of the users it is intended for, the environment in which it operates and the society to which it belongs."
