Grassi Museum für Angewandte Kunst | Stepping into the limelight

Grassi Museum für Angewandte Kunst | Stepping into the limelight | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

Leipzig | 28.03.2013 - 29.09.2013

"The special relationship which exists between people and shoes – and in particular women and shoes – is a popular source of fascination. The mystical attraction they exert is felt not only by the female of the species, but also to an increasing extent by designers and artists who are thinking ‘outside the shoebox’ and falling head over heels for footwear.

Never before has an exhibition showcased such an experimental, boundary-pushing concept of shoe design. There is nothing mainstream about the styles on show; rather, they are imaginative, bold and even provocative.

Some 150 pairs of shoes from a hundred or so international designers introduce the visitor to a wealth of styles, ranging from the architecturally inspired to creations of audacious irony and socially-motivated footwear."

The Met | Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between

The Met | Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

New York | 04.05.2017 - 04.09.2017

"The Costume Institute's spring 2017 exhibition examines the work of fashion designer Rei Kawakubo, known for her avant-garde designs and ability to challenge conventional notions of beauty, good taste, and fashionability. The thematic show features approximately 140 examples of Kawakubo's womenswear for Comme des Garçons dating from the early 1980s to her most recent collection, many with heads and wigs created and styled by Julien d'Ys. The galleries illustrate the designer's revolutionary experiments in "in-betweenness"—the space between boundaries. Objects are organized into nine aesthetic expressions of interstitiality in Kawakubo's work: Absence/Presence, Design/Not Design, Fashion/Anti-Fashion, Model/Multiple, Then/Now, High/Low, Self/Other, Object/Subject, and Clothes/Not Clothes. Kawakubo breaks down the imaginary walls between these dualisms, exposing their artificiality and arbitrariness."

Toronto | 17.01.2017 - 28.04.2017

"[An exhibition] that examines how biomimicry – the design of products, services, and systems that imitate nature’s models – has given new rise to design thinking. More and more, designers are looking to nature for responsible design solutions, which has been fuelled by innovation in technology.
This exhibition invites visitors into a multisensory, imaginative environment that responds to present-day issues that are affecting design practitioners through a survey of products, things, and solutions."

Gewerbemuseum | Object Lessons - The story of material education in eight chapters | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

Winterthur | 09.04.2017 - 01.10.2017

"This exhibition is divided into eight chapters which recount the story of learning with, about and through materials: in science, at school, in commerce, crafts and at home, in novels and films, in the archive and on the Internet. Its focal point is an “object lesson box”. This small box, which contains over a hundred materials, was developed as a teaching aid in the nineteenth century.
The exhibition shows that material literacy has always been relevant, why it was forgotten and what it may look like in the future."

National Print Museum | Green Sleeves: The Irish Printed Record Cover

National Print Museum | Green Sleeves: The Irish Printed Record Cover | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

Dublin | 05.05.2017 - 01.10.2017

"This exhibition examines the Irish-printed album cover. Included album covers were all designed and printed in Ireland. The work was completed for Irish groups, who worked at home or abroad, as well as albums from abroad referencing Ireland or Irishness. The collection dates from the late 1950s to the present day, and covers a wide range of musical and non-musical genres. Arising from the increase in popularity of the vinyl record, the Irish print industry saw an increase in companies solely devoted to album covers in the 1960s. This business flourished for two decades before declining along with the vinyl record in the 1980s. Yet even with the decline in production and sales, the vinyl record and the album cover have both persisted, and have seen a revival of late. Despite selling in much smaller numbers than its heyday, the format has proven remarkably resilient and album covers continue to be designed in Ireland."
