Gemeente Museum | Architecture and Interiors. The Desire for Style

Gemeente Museum | Architecture and Interiors. The Desire for Style | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

Den Haag | 10.06.2017 - 17.06.2017

"The architecture and interiors of De Stijl are famous around the world. Dutch architects and designers like Gerrit Rietveld, Theo van Doesburg, Cornelis van Eesteren and J.J.P. Oud blazed the trail for generations of progressive thinkers who came after them. The historical roots of De Stijl are less well-known. This summer, the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag and Het Nieuwe Instituut (which holds the greatest architecture collection in the world) present a marvellous overview of drawings, architectural models and examples of furniture by members of the influential art movement. Exhibited side by side for the first time ever, the works offer surprising insights: what seems simple and straightforward at first sight proves to be ambiguous and complex. And what appears new may turn out not to have been."

Vitra Design Museum | Together! The New Architecture of the Collective | design exhibitions | Scoop.it
Weil am Rhein | 03.06.2017 – 10.09.2017
"Housing is scarce – that much has become evident in the last few years. As real estate prices in big cities continue to skyrocket, conventional ideas of housing development prove unable to meet demands. The reaction to these challenges has been a silent revolution in contemporary architecture – towards collective building and living. Using models, films, and walk-in displays, the exhibition »Together! The New Architecture of the Collective« addresses this global phenomenon by presenting a broad array of collective building and living projects from Europe, Asia, and the United States. An overview of historical precedents for the current wave of collectives demonstrates that the idea of collectivity has been a recurring theme in the history of architecture, from the reformist ideas of the nineteenth century to the hippies and squatters of the twentieth who touted the slogan »Make love, not lofts«."

Paris | 15.03.2017 - 19.06.2017

"Digital technologies have revolutionised design and production, transforming the practice of architects, designers and artists. What is the status of the author-creator in the age of non-standard production and its unique but industrially manufactured objects? What is the status of the 3D-printed object, simultaneously everyday object, technological product, work of art, designer item, and architectural prototype? How come the digital age has seen it spread to every field of production? Described as a disruptive technology, 3D printing has become widely diffused over the last decade and a half, thanks open-source-software-based platforms, adopted throughout industry from aeronautics to biotechnology."

MAK Vienna | Book Covers of the Wiener Werkstätte

MAK Vienna | Book Covers of the Wiener Werkstätte | design exhibitions | Scoop.it
Vienna | 08.03.2017 - 18.06.2017
"Although it may seem surprising from a modern-day perspective that bibliophiles in the past could be so dissatisfied with publisher’s editions that they would actually commission artists to design new book covers for their purchases, in the first third of the 20th century that was an entirely common practice. Indeed, over 300 book covers were designed at the Wiener Werkstätte between 1904 and 1929. With the aid of the objects from private collections—particularly the Ernst Ploil and Richard Grubman Collections—as well as from the MAK Collection that are on display in the exhibition BOOK COVERS OF THE WIENER WERKSTÄTTE, it is possible to demonstrate the tremendous abundance of ideas and the diverse craft techniques that are so characteristic of the book covers of the Wiener Werkstätte."

Hamburg | 31.05.2017 - 05.11.2017
"Keith Haring, born in Pennsylvania in 1958, moves to New York at the age of twenty and immediately falls under the spell of the lively street-art scene. At this point, Pop Art has already been around for some time. Graffiti shapes the face of the city. It takes Keith Haring only a few years to find his artistic path. He develops an unmistakable style that, with its bold lines and singular figures, has close ties to both comics and street art."

The Art Institute of Chicago | Who Builds Your Architecture? | design exhibitions | Scoop.it
Chicago | Until 11.06.2017
"Whether majestic skyscrapers, eye-catching museums, or sprawling residential complexes, buildings emerge from intricate, lengthy processes of design and construction that involve a host of different actors, from architects and engineers to clients and banks to contractors and construction workers. These relationships operate within a global network of knowledge transfer, manufacturing, and labor—people and materials moving around the world, often in uneven and unequal ways. This exhibition is part of a series for which the Department of Architecture and Design enlists contemporary architects and designers to organize installations that investigate critical issues within their practices. [...] The exhibition is divided into two parts: the first looks broadly at the construction process through a drawing of a fictional transnational project. The second examines the design and construction of specific facade components from buildings in four global cities."

Design Museum London | California. Designing Freedom | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

London | 24.05.2017 - 15.10.2017

"California has become a global centre of design. While its mid-century modernism is well documented, this is the first exhibition to examine California’s more recent influence on design.[...]

The central premise is that California has pioneered tools of personal liberation, from LSD to surfboards and iPhones. This ambitious survey brings together political posters and portable devices, but also looks beyond hardware to explore how user interface designers in the San Francisco Bay Area are shaping some of our most common daily experiences. By turns empowering, addictive and troubling, Californian products have affected our lives to such an extent that in some ways we are all now Californians."

"Today, 60 million people are fleeing from war, or have been displaced for other reasons. They often lack even the most fundamental necessities of life. Designers and architects can get involved and respond to these needs by developing inexpensive and/or smart solutions. And at a later stage – when people have arrived at a new destination – designers can help them to build new lives, and integrate into society through new technologies and innovative solutions."

Bibliothèque Forney | Mode & Femmes 14/18 | design exhibitions | Scoop.it
Paris | 28.02.2017 - 17.06.2017

Lausanne | 31.05.2017 - 01.10.2017

"The one object that has been inextricably linked to the idea of image across all ages and art forms, from art to literature, new media to design, must surely be the mirror. As well as its reflective function, it is has also been imbued with strong symbolic connotations. The mirror is thus associated with an array of myths across many cultures. [...] Each chapter tackles a specific theme relating to the mirror or reflections, and presents an array of design objects, complemented by others from the worlds of contemporary art and photography. Artists, whether famous or emerging, offer their take on the idea which, on the frozen surface of the window, now defines our being in the world."

The Museum at FIT | Force of Nature

The Museum at FIT | Force of Nature | design exhibitions | Scoop.it
New York | 30.05.2017 - 18.11.2017
"Force of Nature examines the complex relationship between fashion and the natural world. The exhibition reveals how nature has historically influenced fashion, and how fashion can serve as an indicator of society’s relationship with the natural world. In eighteenth century Europe, for example, nature became an object of renewed fascination as a result of overseas exploration. This fascination found expression in garments that featured depictions of exotic plants and animals. Spanning the eighteenth century to the present, the exhibition is organized into ten sections, each focusing on a facet of fashion’s connection to nature. Garments, textiles, and accessories, exclusively from the collection of The Museum at FIT, illustrate how principles in the natural sciences, such as the dynamics of sexual attraction, have informed fashion design."
