Fashion and Textile Museum | Kaffe Fassett : A Life in Colour

Fashion and Textile Museum | Kaffe Fassett : A Life in Colour | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

London | 22.03.2013 - 29.06.2013

"Kaffe Fassett – A Life in Colour’ is a celebration of the work of one of the great practitioners of contemporary craft. This exhibition, the first in London since Kaffe Fassett’s record-breaking show at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1988, features over 100 works within a dramatic installation designed by Sue Timney.

Exhibition highlights include extravagantly-coloured 9-foot-wide knitted shawls, coats and throws, patchwork fabrics shown in a glorious selection of quilts, as well as items especially created for this exhibit and not seen in public before. The design also features a ‘feeling’ wall that allows visitors to touch and better understand the textiles on display and their construction. From his childhood in the creative community of Big Sur, California, to his career as a painter, and later as a knitwear and textile designer in London from the 1960s to the present day, Kaffe’s ability to blend pattern, texture and colour has won him a dedicated following of enthusiasts."

Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe | Drawing Fashion. Masterpieces of a Century | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

Hamburg | 19.12.2014 - 03.05.2015

"This unique overview demonstrates that the genre of fashion drawings is justified in being seen an art form in its own right. True, fashion has been depicted ever since ancient times, and since the 19th century also illustrated with drawings in magazines and series of prints, but the fashion drawing as an independent format only came into its own with the rise of fashion magazines such as Vogue, Gazette du Bon Ton or Harper’s Bazaar. The “Drawing Fashion” which the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg (MKG) will be showing from 19 December on are from those in the possession of the renowned gallery owner, collector and great expert on the art of illustration Joëlle Chariau. The original drawings from this collection give us an idea of the essential nature of fashion drawing and their quality on the highest level of artistic excellence. "

Barcelona | 19.12.2014 - 21.12.2014

"The “wishes” of famous designers and architects that were on show in the Victoria & Albert Museum [...] are coming to Barcelona.

The “Wish List” is a remarkable collaboration between the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC), Benchmark Furniture and household names from the design world, such as Terence Conran, Richard Rogers, Norman Foster, Zaha Hadid, and Paul Smith. The famous commissioners worked with up and coming designers, who not only developed the designs, but then actually made the pieces with the help of Benchmark’s craftsmen."

Vienna | 17.12.2014 - 19.04.2015

"The exhibition presents a contrasting selection of works from two pioneers of Modernism, complete with historical background and examples of their impact extending up to the present day. They developed two contrary approaches to the expression of individuality and self-realization among modern consumers."

Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague | Man-Made Fibres and Clothing from the Mid-Twentieth Century to the Present

Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague | Man-Made Fibres and Clothing from the Mid-Twentieth Century to the Present | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

Prague | 02.10.2014 - 11.01.2015

"To explore the history of clothing and fashion trends is to examine simultaneously the history of textile fibres. The past endeavours to learn about the laws of nature and govern them included efforts to better exploit raw materials for the production of textile materials, that would reduce humanity’s dependence on nature. The beginnings of man-made fibre research hark back to the 17th century. However, only much later, in the 20th century, can we really speak of the century of manmade fibres. The rapid advancement of textile, clothing and chemical industries after World War II brought about the production of a variety of cheap fabrics made of chemical fibres that raised great hopes among manufacturers and consumers in their day."

"For the first time in The Netherlands, the Kunsthal presents an overview of the broad, encompassing work of Rudolf Steiner(1861-1925). Steiner was one of the 20th century's most significant and influential reformers, and his legacy is as relevant today as ever. Steiner served as a source of inspiration for some artistic giants including Piet Mondriaan, Wassily Kandinsky and Josef Beuys, and still does so for many contemporary artists and designers, such as Olafur Eliasson and Konstantin Grcic. The exhibition presents a rich and extensive collection of furniture, models and blackboard drawings, offering a fascinating insight into his life, work and sweeping intellectual legacy."

The Metropolitan Museum of Art | Grand Design: Pieter Coecke van Aelst and Renaissance Tapestry

The Metropolitan Museum of Art | Grand Design: Pieter Coecke van Aelst and Renaissance Tapestry | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

New York | 08.10.2014 - 11.01.2015

"The first major monographic exhibition devoted to the great 16th-century Netherlandish artist Pieter Coecke van Aelst (1502-1550) will open at The Metropolitan Museum of Art on October 8, 2014. Grand Design: Pieter Coecke van Aelst and Renaissance Tapestry will explore the artist’s career and reunite many of the finest surviving drawings, panel paintings, and cartoon fragments from his hand with 19 of the spectacular Renaissance tapestries that were made to his designs. These massive hangings were the ultimate medium for Coecke’s artistic expression, yet while they were being woven, he never touched them; they were executed by weavers who superbly translated his vision with brilliant silks, wools, and precious metal-wrapped threads. The splendid tapestries, many on loan for the first time from the major royal and national collections of Europe, will reveal the monumental scale, stunning palette, and artistic daring of this important Renaissance master."

"Facebook is blue; Earth is blue when viewed from outer space. Blue is the colour of romanticism and of melancholy. Over 80 percent of the western population chooses blue as their favourite colour. Conservative parties prefer blue; Margret Thatcher’s blue outfits are legendary. It is precisely because blue is so omnipresent in our society that it has experienced such diverse cultural ascriptions and is so open to being ideologically charged. To reclaim a colour like this also means to pick up on its complex and multilayered connotations as well as potentially to reinterpret them."
