Fashion and Textile Museum | Kaffe Fassett : A Life in Colour

Fashion and Textile Museum | Kaffe Fassett : A Life in Colour | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

London | 22.03.2013 - 29.06.2013

"Kaffe Fassett – A Life in Colour’ is a celebration of the work of one of the great practitioners of contemporary craft. This exhibition, the first in London since Kaffe Fassett’s record-breaking show at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1988, features over 100 works within a dramatic installation designed by Sue Timney.

Exhibition highlights include extravagantly-coloured 9-foot-wide knitted shawls, coats and throws, patchwork fabrics shown in a glorious selection of quilts, as well as items especially created for this exhibit and not seen in public before. The design also features a ‘feeling’ wall that allows visitors to touch and better understand the textiles on display and their construction. From his childhood in the creative community of Big Sur, California, to his career as a painter, and later as a knitwear and textile designer in London from the 1960s to the present day, Kaffe’s ability to blend pattern, texture and colour has won him a dedicated following of enthusiasts."

Vitra Design Museum | Ettore Sottsass - Rebel and Poet | design exhibitions | Scoop.it
Weil am Rhein | 14.07.2017 – 24.09.2017
"This year he would have celebrated his 100th birthday: the Austro-Italian designer Ettore Sottsass (1917–2007), one of the most influential and unconventional figures in twentieth-century design. He gained renown with his designs for the office equipment manufacturer Olivetti, for his poetic, minimalist sculptural objects, and as the leading figure of the Memphis design collective in the 1980s. Over the course of his long career, Sottsass moved between disciplines, leaving behind a fascinating oeuvre that is represented by many objects in the collection of the Vitra Design Museum. The Vitra Schaudepot exhibition presents an overview of approximately 30 of his furniture designs, consumer products, photographs and writings. It pays tribute to an extraordinary designer who did not regard form and function as constraints, but rather viewed design as an opportunity to explore the nature of human existence."

Musée Bourdelle | Balenciaga, l'oeuvre au noir | design exhibitions | Scoop.it
Paris | 08.03.2017 - 16.07.2017

The gaze of Hélène Binet, a photographer who has been one of the most mindful of Hadid’s production over the years, interprets the strength and the dynamism of the architecture with a series of intense photographs that provide new details of her works."

"How can we repair the future? And how can architecture and urbanism contribute to this? For the exemplary trial run of a Care + Repair urbanism the Architekturzentrum Wien is initiating a public workspace with a closeness to nature on the former railway territory of the impressive Nordbahnhof grounds, one of the largest inner-city development zones in Vienna. This is the gathering point for six international architectural teams who are developing prototypes for Care + Repair in tandem with local initiatives and experts. How can different urban knowledge effectively come together in neighbourhood networks, new uses of community spaces, the re-use of existing material resources, and the care for nature in the city? An on-site exhibition shows projects by the invited teams, showing how Care + Repair architecture works with the existing city and takes it into the future."

Cartier in Motion includes over 170 exhibits alongside rare insights into the research and work of the designers at Cartier, through extracts from material found in the Cartier Archives. Whilst telling the story of Cartier watchmaking and the invention of the modern wristwatch, Cartier in Motion explores the change in society at the turn of the 20th century. "Breathing Colour blurs the boundaries between art and design. Combining intriguing shapes with extensive research; this exhibition questions our preconceptions of colour and embraces its imperfection and experimentation.
The exhibition is divided into separate spaces that simulate daylight conditions at specific times of the day – morning, noon and evening. These three phases explore the impact of changing daylight on our perception of colour. Each installation includes a series of three-dimensional objects as well as textiles, some of which are hand-woven while others are produced on industrial looms."

"Günther Kieser is one of Germany’s most important graphic designers. His primarily focus was on creating posters for jazz and pop concerts, including legendary works like the poster of Jimi Hendrix where cables and switches seem to grow out of his head, or the colorful skull for the Grateful Dead. [...] Now in retirement, Günther Kieser originally no longer wanted to exhibit his works or to design posters. But he has made an exception for Bröhan-Museum, even designing the poster for this exhibition."

"The theory of mobile architecture, conceived by Friedman in 1950s, called into question the Modernist vision whereby the inhabitants are required to adapt to a building and not the reverse: through models, drawings and installations the exhibition recounts the development of this theory while at the same time exploring the theme of improvisation as a “possibility” in the world of architecture, as theorised by Friedman from the 1970s."

Leipzig | 22.06.2017 - 01.10.2017

"The bicycle went through some rapid changes in the last few years: Designers and manufacturers react to the demands of a changed mobility that requires new approaches for solutions, especially in the urban space. The general traffic situation and density require re-orientation that focuses not only on the contrary positions between motorised individual traffic and public transport, but in particular on interim solutions and combinations. The bicycle plays an important role here."

Gemeente Museum | Architecture and Interiors. The Desire for Style | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

Den Haag | 10.06.2017 - 17.06.2017

"The architecture and interiors of De Stijl are famous around the world. Dutch architects and designers like Gerrit Rietveld, Theo van Doesburg, Cornelis van Eesteren and J.J.P. Oud blazed the trail for generations of progressive thinkers who came after them. The historical roots of De Stijl are less well-known. This summer, the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag and Het Nieuwe Instituut (which holds the greatest architecture collection in the world) present a marvellous overview of drawings, architectural models and examples of furniture by members of the influential art movement. Exhibited side by side for the first time ever, the works offer surprising insights: what seems simple and straightforward at first sight proves to be ambiguous and complex. And what appears new may turn out not to have been."

Vitra Design Museum | Together! The New Architecture of the Collective | design exhibitions | Scoop.it
Weil am Rhein | 03.06.2017 – 10.09.2017
"Housing is scarce – that much has become evident in the last few years. As real estate prices in big cities continue to skyrocket, conventional ideas of housing development prove unable to meet demands. The reaction to these challenges has been a silent revolution in contemporary architecture – towards collective building and living. Using models, films, and walk-in displays, the exhibition »Together! The New Architecture of the Collective« addresses this global phenomenon by presenting a broad array of collective building and living projects from Europe, Asia, and the United States. An overview of historical precedents for the current wave of collectives demonstrates that the idea of collectivity has been a recurring theme in the history of architecture, from the reformist ideas of the nineteenth century to the hippies and squatters of the twentieth who touted the slogan »Make love, not lofts«."

"Digital technologies have revolutionised design and production, transforming the practice of architects, designers and artists. What is the status of the author-creator in the age of non-standard production and its unique but industrially manufactured objects? What is the status of the 3D-printed object, simultaneously everyday object, technological product, work of art, designer item, and architectural prototype? How come the digital age has seen it spread to every field of production? Described as a disruptive technology, 3D printing has become widely diffused over the last decade and a half, thanks open-source-software-based platforms, adopted throughout industry from aeronautics to biotechnology."
