Museum Angewandte Kunst | New Everything! | design exhibitions | Scoop.it
Frankfurt | 25.03.2016 - 14.08.2016
"After World War I, a unique modernization and design project that would go down in architectural history as Das Neue Frankfurt (“New Frankfurt”) got underway in the metropolis on the Main.Yet it was a far more comprehensive undertaking that also encompassed political, social and pan-cultural dimensions and aspired towards no less ambitious a goal than to create a new city and a new society. In the exhibition New Everything Frankfurt’s Museum Angewandte Kunst will present a systematic survey of the typography and graphic design of that era for the first time. The exhibition will focus above all on the 1920s, while also extending the time span to the post-World War II era and into the 1980s, and will moreover be enhanced by spotlights on the vibrant world of present-day design."

Les Arts Decoratifs | Fashion forward, 3 siècles de mode (1715-2016) | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

Paris | 07.04.2016 - 14.08.2016

"The Musée des Arts Décoratifs is celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of its fashion collection from April 7 to August 14, 2016. In doing so we are responding to our public’s strongly expressed desire to at last be shown an all-embracing panorama of fashion history over several centuries. It will also be an unique opportunity to showcase the jewels and highlight the particularities of a national fashion and textiles collection curated in full dialogue with the other departments of a museum dedicated to all the decorative arts. The ‟Fashion Forward, 3 Centuries of Fashion (1715-2016)” exhibition will bring together 300 items of men’s, women’s and children’s fashion from the 18th century to today, selected from the museum’s collections to provide a novel chronological overview."

CID au Grand Hornu | Aldo Bakker. Pause

CID au Grand Hornu | Aldo Bakker. Pause | design exhibitions | Scoop.it
Hornu | 01.05.2016 - 14.08.2016
"This is the first large-scale retrospective to focus on the Dutch designer Aldo Bakker, at a moment that seems particularly right. [...] His repertoire includes objects and small items of furniture, in which formal research is prioritised over any other consideration. Turning his back on functionalism as much as post-modernism and any other movement or trend, Aldo Bakker has developed a highly personal, formal vocabulary. His objects often appear to be invested with a personality and have their own character, as though they were autonomous creatures. Shaped for the most part out of a single material (ceramic, glass, wood, copper, etc.) they appear like organic, friendly forms, not unlike a pictogram. Their relative functionality leads to a dramatisation of human gestures."

Venezia | 18.04.2016 - 31.07.2016

"The exhibition The Glass of the Architects. Vienna 1900–1937 for the first time thematizes the epochal influence that the designs of Viennese Modernism’s young architects exerted on the development of art glass in Vienna in the first three decades of the 20th century. Based on over 300 works from the collection of the MAK – Austrian Museum of Applied Arts / Contemporary Art as well as from private collections, it presents the nascence of the art of modern glassmaking in Austria from the last decades of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy to the end of the First Republic."

Bröhan Museum | All that Jazz - Poster art by Niklaus Troxler - Blackbox #1 | design exhibitions | Scoop.it
Berlin | 23.01.2016 - 17.07.2016
"There’s no one form of jazz, but many different kinds: from New Orleans jazz, Dixieland, swing, bebop, cool jazz, free jazz, or fusion to a mix of techno and jazz. Jazz is diverse and vital, just like the works by Niklaus Troxler, who for over 40 years has been making the posters for the summer jazz festival and winter concert series he founded in the Swiss town of Willisau. Diversity became a signature of his style, for the posters respond to various styles of jazz and explore the abilities of great jazz performers. In his unusual designs, Troxler, one of Europe’s most renowned graphic designers, interprets jazz history and the development of poster design."

"Wearable technology and head-mounted displays are in the press daily. Why now? While the basic technology has existed for decades, only recently have these devices become practical and desirable. "On You: Wearing Technology" looks at the challenges along the road to making a consumer wearable computer: power and heat, networking, mobile input, and display through examples of consumer, professional, and “maker” devices. The exhibition also includes personal stories of individuals who use or create wearable technology."

Providence | 22.01.2016 - 03.07.2016

"In 1890, designer William Morris quipped that women were “upholstered like arm chairs.” Buried under folds, ruching, tassels, and fringe, they were on the verge of becoming fixtures in their own drawing rooms. The confections on view in Swagged and Poufed illustrate the luxury of material and eccentricities of form typical of the late 19th century and reveal their continued influence in contemporary designs by Kenzo Takada, Gianfranco Ferré for Dior, and Maison Martin Margiela."

MAD Museum | Eye for Design

MAD Museum | Eye for Design | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

New York | 07.06.2016 - 18.09.2016

"Eye for Design explores the unique graphic identity created by the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) in the 1960s and 1970s through its imaginatively designed exhibition catalogues and related ephemera. The examples gathered here—drawn primarily from MAD’s archive or that of the American Craft Council—were designed by many American and international graphic artists, including Emil Antonucci, John J. Reiss, and Linda Hinrichs. At a time when the field of graphic design was becoming increasingly corporate, these designers rejected the minimal abstraction of the brand logo in favor of hand-rendered illustration, playful use of typography, vibrant color, and inventive adaptation of the catalogue form."

CCCB | Making Africa. A continent of contemporary design

CCCB | Making Africa. A continent of contemporary design | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

Barcelona | 23.03.2016 - 28.08.2016

"The exhibition showcases the work of over 120 African artists and creators and illustrates how design fuels economic and political changes. "Making Africa" speaks, from Africa, of a new continent “under construction” and places emphasis on its possibilities over its problems. The exhibition offers a new tale of Africa, an invitation to value the continent from a brand new perspective. Many of the major African capitals are seeing the consolidation of a generation that, around culture and through creation and design, is defending its right to build itself in freedom, without foreign tutelage and contradicting the stereotypes projected from the West."

Museum of Fine Arts | Kenneth Paul Block. Illustrations

Museum of Fine Arts | Kenneth Paul Block. Illustrations | design exhibitions | Scoop.it
Boston | 12.12.2015 - 14.08.2016
"Kenneth Paul Block (1925–2009) is arguably the most important fashion illustrator of the second half of the 20th century. His versatility and ability to create a graceful gesture or evoke the high energy of the post–WWII generation make his work stand out among illustrators of his time. Throughout his career, mainly with Women’s Wear Daily and W Magazine, he chronicled fashionable designs and the lifestyles of the people who wore them. Blending illustration and portraiture, his drawings of figures like Jacqueline Kennedy, Babe Paley and Gloria Guinness capture the sophistication of the era’s socialites and celebrities. This chronological survey contains approximately 30 works spanning Block’s career from the 1950s into the 1990s––drawing from the MFA’s repository of Block’s extensive archive of drawings. Including examples of fashion illustrations and society portraits, works range from early black-and-white drawings in charcoal to later works in watercolor and colored pencil."

Melbourne | 05.03.2016 - 31.07.2016
"The first major survey of Australian fashion to be undertaken in this country. Since settlement, Australian fashion has been shaped by geographic, seasonal and cultural variants, and defined by colloquial vernacular. In every era, Australian designers have consciously defined the character of how we dress according to local terms of reference. Even today, Australian style can be understood as the by-product of independence and impertinence. From the early dressmaking establishments of Brisbane to the mid-century salons of Collins Street, to the contemporary studios by Bondi’s beaches, 200 Years of Australian Fashion traverses over two centuries of fashion design in Australia."

"The production of time-saving devices surged from the 1920s to the 1940s, and it was no coincidence that the industrial design profession developed alongside it. Designers for large companies such as Eastman Kodak and Electrolux helped to stimulate the economy, especially in the U.S. during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Their attractive packages for familiar and new devices for the living room, office, and the kitchen included everything from televisions to pencil sharpeners and blenders. Examples of many of these now-familiar designs from Mia’s Modernism collection are featured in this exhibition."

"The first Schaudepot temporary exhibition is dedicated to Radical Design, a design Movement that reached its peak at the end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s in Italy and is one of the most important avant-garde movements in the history of design. With manifestos, unconventional design vocabulary, transdisciplinary working methods and utopian design ideas, exponents of Radical Design were protesting against functionalism and the established taste in design and architecture. Thus, they showed that designers and architects must not only be seen as service providers in a commercial context but that they can also actively and critically engage in social and political matters."
