UN City by 3XN Architecture in Copenhagen

UN City by 3XN Architecture in Copenhagen | Studium Media - Musings | Scoop.it

The new regional head office of the United Nations is designed with clear references to the UN’s identity and values: It is a building that physically reaches out to all parts the world, while the sculptural staircase in its core reflects the UN’s work to create global dialogue.

Located on an artificial island the building is naturally separated from its immediate surroundings, while still being highly visible from both the city and the water.

Elegant Installation Brings Bright Lights and WiFi to a Public Plaza in South Korea

Elegant Installation Brings Bright Lights and WiFi to a Public Plaza in South Korea | Studium Media - Musings | Scoop.it

The Communication Hut by Herreros Arquitectos is hung from three poles placed beyond its floating amoeba-like ring, and sits in the trees scattered through one of South Korea’s public squares. At all times of day, the ring emits WiFi signals to encourage occupation of the space, while at night it glows to provide a feeling of safety.

The Communication Hut encourages the public to use the space as an outdoor living room. By providing a relatively unobstructed ground plane, the occupants of the space can see friends from afar and children can play safely. The suspended structure, then, gives the site its boundaries, suggesting an enclosed space where sitting and stopping is welcomed. The Communication Hut is a subtle yet effective intervention in the workings of the city...

Innovation + Technology at Cornell University's Gates Hall by Morphosis

Innovation + Technology at Cornell University's Gates Hall by Morphosis | Studium Media - Musings | Scoop.it

Morphosis Architects incorporates an innovative stainless steel facade screen to mitigate heat gain for new academic building.

Los Angeles–based Morphosis delivered a 100,000-square-foot, five-story building that is currently completing construction on Cornell University's Computing and Information Sciences (CIS) program structure.

While in essence a simple, efficient, rectangular plan and elevation, the design features several elements—including a twisting stainless steel sun screen and a protruding arm of the upper floors hovering above the main entrance—that make it an unmistakable product of Morphosis as well as a suitable looking enclosure for a discipline forged by the realities of the digital age.

The Closest Look Yet at the Relative Energy Efficiency of Big Buildings

The Closest Look Yet at the Relative Energy Efficiency of Big Buildings | Studium Media - Musings | Scoop.it

New York City's largest buildings have as outsized a place in the city's energy use profile as they do in the skyline. Just 2% of New York's properties account for 48% of the city's energy use.

What's a city to do? The Bloomberg administration is doing what it does best: crunching massive amounts of data. On Wednesday, the mayor released the city's second annual benchmarking report, which analyzes the year-to-year energy and water use of New York's 26,680 largest buildings.

"It's the first time we've had access to this comparative information," says Melissa Wright, an associate director of the Natural Resources Defense Council’s City Energy Project who has worked in the Bloomberg administration. "For so long it was this hidden information about what the real energy performance was of a set of buildings or individual buildings."

'We created an interactive data visualisation about plastic pollution in the world’s oceans based on a study that our scientist and oceanographer Laurent Lebreton published in 2012. It is based on the results of a numerical model of floating marine debris and serves to identify the 5 plastic gyres as well as other accumulation zones. Furthermore it provides an insight to relative contributors by regions and allows for comparison by region and accumulation zone.'

All Aboard: Rail-Centric Construction Gets Back on Track

All Aboard: Rail-Centric Construction Gets Back on Track | Studium Media - Musings | Scoop.it
With train travel regaining popularity and high-speed passenger rail projects or improvements under construction in California, Michigan, and the Northeast Corridor, another era of railroad station construction is dawning.

In the last decades of the 20th century, many of the projects undertaken during the golden era of railroad station restorations across the country involved anything except trains. Today, with train travel regaining popularity- Amtrak ridership has jumped 49 percent since 2000-  nearly every station project includes intercity train service, and most incorporate other forms of transit, too.

In this era, train service is returning to some stations that had abandoned it, and rail hubs once again are seen as magnets for real estate activity and opportunity...

Sprouting Eco-Cities: Sustainability Trend-Setters Or Gated Communities?

Sprouting Eco-Cities: Sustainability Trend-Setters Or Gated Communities? | Studium Media - Musings | Scoop.it

Not only are many cities bursting at the seams from urban overcrowding; they are also increasingly starting to bear the strains of climate change.

Although there are numerous solutions to either challenge, the building up of new "eco-cities" tries to kill the two birds with one stone. But what is the role of these master-planned communities in our sustainable futures?

The concept of an isolated, ecologically minded community is by no means a new one. The forward-thinking Buckminster Fuller was talking about "domed communities" in the 1960s, and in 1975 writer Ernest Callenbach published his novel Ecotopia, greatly influencing the green movements that would quickly follow.

While smaller versions may have grown more organically, contemporary Eco-Cities are often top-down master plans designed by big-name firms. Since many of these Eco-Cities are still under development, we can only speculate about their future performance and whether they will be flexible enough to function as a "real city."

The Netherlands Is Building A Country-Wide EV Charging Network

The Netherlands Is Building A Country-Wide EV Charging Network | Studium Media - Musings | Scoop.it

A dense, relatively small country, the Netherlands is well suited to electric vehicles, and the new Fastned scheme could be a "benchmark" for other places.

The distinctive yellow stations are about 100 feet across, and covered in solar panels to power things like lights and cameras. Each station, which is located at an existing gas stop, will have four to eight charging points. If all goes well, they could make vehicle charging as convenient as filling a tank, though drivers will still need to wait 15 to 30 minutes before the task is completed.
