An Economical Modular Prefab in Oregon

An Economical Modular Prefab in Oregon | Fransoix's Musings - Les intérêts de Fransoix | Scoop.it

The brief was basic: a simple guesthouse for a familyto live while Bohlin Cywinski Jackson designed their main residence. The architect's design for the is instantly legible with a repetition of trusses, windows, and lumber creating a strong linear profile.

A standard, repeatable, four-foot-wide bay makes use of economical, available materials, such as open-web steel trusses, plywood, laminated veneer lumber, and an insulated aluminum window system. The resulting residence is linear, with an open-plan kitchen and living space, 3 bedrooms, and an office with views over the Cascade Range.

Ecorium of the National Ecological Institute, South Korea

Ecorium of the National Ecological Institute, South Korea | Fransoix's Musings - Les intérêts de Fransoix | Scoop.it

The Ecorium of the National Ecological Institute in Seocheon-gun, South Korea promotes a design concept by SAMOO Architects and Engineers that reflects three key concepts:

"From the Nature," "Be the Nature," & "With the Nature."

The first is expressed by the dynamic, organic lines of the Institute and its grounds.  The second uses cutting-edge technology to recreate ecological environments by aligning greenhouses with the optimal amount of sunlight for each one.  The third includes visitors who immerse themselves in the complex ecological experience.  The Ecorium is poised to become a landmark in green research, education, and exhibitions.

Designing The Innovation Economy: Using Technology To Shape The Future City

Designing The Innovation Economy: Using Technology To Shape The Future City | Fransoix's Musings - Les intérêts de Fransoix | Scoop.it
With technological change marching forward at a rapid clip, city environments are being reshaped and the urban experience is being reimagined.

Nearly ubiquitous mobile access has provided visitors and residents with the ability to unlock the “secrets” of the city, opening the door to new experiences and improving livability and user-friendliness. However, in order to make the best of these changes, policy must welcome and support innovation and the urban transformation that accompanies it—and there’s no one-size-fits-all formula...

UN City by 3XN Architecture in Copenhagen

UN City by 3XN Architecture in Copenhagen | Fransoix's Musings - Les intérêts de Fransoix | Scoop.it

The new regional head office of the United Nations is designed with clear references to the UN’s identity and values: It is a building that physically reaches out to all parts the world, while the sculptural staircase in its core reflects the UN’s work to create global dialogue.

Located on an artificial island the building is naturally separated from its immediate surroundings, while still being highly visible from both the city and the water.

Innovation + Technology at Cornell University's Gates Hall by Morphosis

Innovation + Technology at Cornell University's Gates Hall by Morphosis | Fransoix's Musings - Les intérêts de Fransoix | Scoop.it

Morphosis Architects incorporates an innovative stainless steel facade screen to mitigate heat gain for new academic building.

Los Angeles–based Morphosis delivered a 100,000-square-foot, five-story building that is currently completing construction on Cornell University's Computing and Information Sciences (CIS) program structure.

While in essence a simple, efficient, rectangular plan and elevation, the design features several elements—including a twisting stainless steel sun screen and a protruding arm of the upper floors hovering above the main entrance—that make it an unmistakable product of Morphosis as well as a suitable looking enclosure for a discipline forged by the realities of the digital age.

The Closest Look Yet at the Relative Energy Efficiency of Big Buildings

The Closest Look Yet at the Relative Energy Efficiency of Big Buildings | Fransoix's Musings - Les intérêts de Fransoix | Scoop.it

New York City's largest buildings have as outsized a place in the city's energy use profile as they do in the skyline. Just 2% of New York's properties account for 48% of the city's energy use.

What's a city to do? The Bloomberg administration is doing what it does best: crunching massive amounts of data. On Wednesday, the mayor released the city's second annual benchmarking report, which analyzes the year-to-year energy and water use of New York's 26,680 largest buildings.

"It's the first time we've had access to this comparative information," says Melissa Wright, an associate director of the Natural Resources Defense Council’s City Energy Project who has worked in the Bloomberg administration. "For so long it was this hidden information about what the real energy performance was of a set of buildings or individual buildings."

The Seas of Plastic | Visual.ly | Fransoix's Musings - Les intérêts de Fransoix | Scoop.it

'We created an interactive data visualisation about plastic pollution in the world’s oceans based on a study that our scientist and oceanographer Laurent Lebreton published in 2012. It is based on the results of a numerical model of floating marine debris and serves to identify the 5 plastic gyres as well as other accumulation zones. Furthermore it provides an insight to relative contributors by regions and allows for comparison by region and accumulation zone.'
