After idea generation, the next step in the thinking process is incubation. After you have spent time collecting the facts and generating ideas, forget the problem. Hand it over to the subconscious to incubate. The subconscious is a vast computer, which stores everything you have ever seen, felt, smelt or experienced. Read a book, watch a movie, listen to music or ride a bicycle. Incubation after hard work can result in discovery.

Paris-based practice betillon / dorval-bory have designed '8 houses in chiba', a series of detached dwellings contained within a single roof form in chiba, japan. using the qualities of attic spaces, the interior program is completely inserted within the gabled structure. elevated from the ground, the encompassing landscape continues uninterrupted beneath the residences, also leaving area for a grand communal garden as well as parking.

'Room to grow' is a conceptual concept by british architects james perry and claire harper. the idea was developed for housing association peabody's 150th anniversary, which launched an international competition to design 150 homes on a former hospital site in the east end of london.

The proposal takes its lead from the peabody schemes of the early 20th century featuring a robust outer façade that encloses a softer, sociable heart. This is expressed in the contrast between the brick wall of row housing and the composite of lightweight panels that make up the softer facades, facing onto the shared communal spaces.

Overlooking a residential street in suita-shi, japan, the 'house in suita' by tokyo-based horibe naoko architect office borrows scenery from a nearby 50-year old cherry tree. two glass cubes open the corners of the dwelling, one offering a panoramic view towards the leafy canopy positioned to the north of the structure. smaller in size, the other takes into account a high retaining wall to the south of the sloping site by minimizing exposure to the homes lowest level. the gradually graded lawn and curved concrete stairway form a comfortable approach to the front door.

to house a botanical garden in kangawa, japan. expressed with different materials, the overall external compositions are parallel,
elevating a bifurcated, solid mass upon a transparent base. a glass-enclosed museum and shop extend views towards a field
and distant hills, containing the restrooms within an opaque, rectangular volume at the center of the floor plan. an open-riser
steel staircase leads to the spacious studio space, with a perimeter ledge intended for computers and work stations.

Close to Lake Joux in Switzerland, the architecture firm of Ralph Germann designed this lake house that’s covered in a dark, anthracite metallic covering to protect it from the cold climate. The ends of the house are set back and covered in larch wood giving it a homey feel. The windows are long and narrow which let the homeowners take in panoramic views of the lake, also giving the exterior of the house some extra architectural details.

Tokyo-based practice horibe naoko architect office have recently completed the 'house in kyobate' for a couple and their two children in nara-shi, japan. A wooden cube is extracted from the corner of the neutral two-storey elevation, cantilevering above the perimeter plantings and forecourt. Addressing the street, the windowless facade and extracted volume alludes to the programmatic hierarchy within the interior of the home.

The interior of traditional japanese homes feature a space with floors surfaced with straw tatami mats, referred to as the tsuzukima, or 'continuous gap'. Sliding screens within the wide open area may be drawn to subdivide into smaller rooms.

by vienna-based practice triendl + fessler architekten. lifted on a concrete base on a 1500m2 linear and narrow plot of land this
residential structure was developed for two families. due to the complex topographic setting, the corridors are arranged like a chain
in order to orient views from rooms towards the southern scenery.
