The Roll Tape Sculpture ❏ .. Just Fantabulous☝

Fantstic Novel Tape-sculptures by an ingenius artist.

What can you do with a roll of packing tape?

If you're renowned street artist Mark Jenkins, you can do things like this:

http://yhoo.it/GM57su
http://www.xmarkjenkinsx.com/storker.html

Who is Mark Jenkins?

Mark Jenkins (born 1970 in Alexandria, Virginia) is an American artist most widely known for the street installations he creates using clear packing tape.

Jenkins' practice of street art is to use the "street as a stage" where his sculptures interact with the surrounding environment including passersby who unknowingly become actors.

His work has been described as whimsical, macabre, surrealist, absurdist, shocking and "situationist", the latter referring to Situationist International.

In addition to creating art, he also teaches his sculpture techniques and installation practices through workshops...

"Once I have the finished sculpture, I'll put it out on the street or in nature or somewhere where it interacts with the environment," he says.

Making Rheoscopic Fluid to Go Super Duper with Design

Making Rheoscopic Fluid to Go Super Duper with Design | Design Arena | Scoop.it

How does this magical substance work?

"Well, to paraphrase Wikipedia, there are crystal flakes that align with the direction of shear when in motion.

These aligned flakes reflect light toward the observer. Once the fluid stops moving, the flakes take on a random orientation and light is again diffused. Of course, Wikipedia gave no hint to the actual ingredient...

I searched for a few good hours trying to figure out how this stuff works. Turns out it's something of a trade secret, it would seem..."

✑ ✵ DENIM ✵ via the Human-Computer Interaction and Design ↝

✑ ✵ DENIM ✵ via the Human-Computer Interaction and Design ↝ | Design Arena | Scoop.it

'DENIM' , led by Prof. James Landay, is a set of researching tools for designing user interfaces that helps web site designers in the early stages of design, particularly through informal interaction such as sketching.

It supports sketching input, allows design at different refinement levels, and unifies the levels through zooming.

DENIM was designed with a pen interface in mind.

The authors note that 128 MB RAM and a pen tablet that can emulate a mouse are recommended for using DENIM (although it will work with a mouse).

✵ Ongoing Research:DENIM

Through a study of web site design practice, we observed that web site designers design sites at different levels of refinement -- site map, storyboard, and individual page -- and that designers sketch at all levels during the early stages of design.

However, existing web design tools do not support these tasks very well. Informed by these observations, we created DENIM, a system that helps web site designers in the early stages of design.

DENIM supports sketching input, allows design at different refinement levels, and unifies the levels through zooming.

We performed an informal evaluation with seven professional designers and found that they reacted positively to the concept and were interested in using such a system in their work.

⇝ ⇝ There are several key differences between DENIM and SILK:

⇝ DENIM supports more views of the design (e.g. site map) than SILK and integrates those views through zooming.

⇝ SILK recognizes widgets that are sketched by the designer. DENIM does not (yet).

⇝ ⇝ Some future enhancements to DENIM include:

⇝ Adding support for widgets found in HTML forms and traditional GUIs.

⇝  Enhancing the visual sketching language to support more complex events (e.g. animation, roll-overs), conditionals, and custom widgets.

⇝ Allowing DENIM to exchange data with other web site design tools.

⇝  Generating artifacts for presentation and documentation purposes.

⇝⇝ Try an exported DENIM HTML site ⇝⇝

Conditionals allow designers to create web sites where transitions between web pages depend on the end-user's actions.

Sneak peek of Macaw >> The code-savvy web design tool... Not Free but worthwhile

Sneak peek of Macaw >> The code-savvy web design tool... Not Free but worthwhile | Design Arena | Scoop.it

  • Stop writing code. Start drawing it.

Macaw provides the same flexibility as your favorite image editor but also writes semantic HTML and remarkably succinct CSS. It's time to expect more from a web design tool.

  • Fluid canvas and grid

Macaw is engineered for fluid widths. Resize the canvas and your grids and elements will update accordingly.

  • Responsive Breakpoints

Designing for different device sizes is tricky. Macaw lets you define arbitrary breakpoints and tweak properties for that specific width.

  • Rich Typography

Macaw gives you access to your system fonts, a full library of web fonts and even allows you to pull in Typekit fonts. It also provides useful calculations like characters per line.

  • Interactivity

Building clickable prototypes in Macaw is as easy as clicking on a target, but it doesn't stop there. You can also add more dynamic interactions with the scripting palette. Macaw will even autogenerate templates and jQuery variables for you.

Design more with less.

  • Global Styles

Macaw lets you save common styles so that you can quickly apply them to elements across your document. Once applied, you can update all of the elements at once with the style editor.

  • Reusable components and assets

Have a complex element that you need to use on multiple pages?

With Macaw you can store it in your library as a component and drag it on to any other page in your project.

  • The engine that learns as you design.

We wanted Macaw to write code you'd be proud enough to hand to developers. Current applications rely on trendy frameworks, export rigid positioning and generate ridiculous IDs. We think designers and developers deserve better. Macaw's powerful, patent-pending engine is called Alchemy and it can do some incredible things.

  • Consolidation

Alchemy analyzes every possible selector to describe your document and determines the most succinct way of using them based on logical criteria: applicability, specificity and semantics.

  • Absolute to Static Conversion

Macaw offers designers the freedom of absolute positioning within the interface but will convert to a static document flow upon export by calculating the necessary margins, padding, floats and clears. It's the best of both worlds.

Smushed 3.67% or 2.23 KB from the size of your image(s). How did we do it?

Smush.it uses optimization techniques specific to image format to remove unnecessary bytes from image files.

It is a "lossless" tool, which means it optimizes the images without changing their look or visual quality.

After Smush.it runs on a web page it reports how many bytes would be saved by optimizing the page's images and provides a downloadable zip file with the minimized image files.

Do not link to the smushed images on Smushit.com since they will only be available there temporarily.

Instead, download the zip file containing the smushed images for your web page and replace your image files with those files.

>>> ALSO:

Smush it comes in different flavours:

  • You can upload a bunch of pictures in your browser
  • You can provide us with a list of image urls or
  • You can get a Firefox Extension or a cross-browser bookmarklet to optimize the images found on any web page

Saving bytes has never been so easy - you point us in the right direction, and we'll do the rest for you.

Mathematicians calculate that there are 177,147 ways to knot a tie

Mathematicians calculate that there are 177,147 ways to knot a tie | Design Arena | Scoop.it

A small team of mathematicians, led by Mikael Vejdemo-Johansson of the of the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, has uploaded a paper to the preprint server arXiv describing a mathematical process they used to determine that the number of ways to tie a tie is 177,147—far more than previous research has suggested...

"We extend the existing enumeration of neck tie knots to include tie knots with a textured front, tied with the narrow end of a tie. These tie knots have gained popularity in recent years, based on reconstructions of a costume detail from The Matrix Reloaded, and are explicitly ruled out in the enumeration by Fink and Mao (2000).

We show that the relaxed tie knot description language that comprehensively describes these extended tie knot classes is either context sensitive or context free. It has a sub-language that covers all the knots that inspired the work, and that is regular.

From this regular sub-language we enumerate 177 147 distinct tie knots that seem tieable with a normal necktie.

These are found through an enumeration of 2 046 winding patterns that can be varied by tucking the tie under itself at various points along the winding. "
