Fifty Recommended Books on Creativity – John Spencer

Fifty Recommended Books on Creativity – John Spencer | Design | Scoop.it
Here is a list of my favorite fifty books on creativity. Some of these are more on the pop culture side while others are more academic. Some are books I agree with while others are books that I don’t necessarily agree with but still provoked a lot of thought. I hope you find this list helpful.

Floating solar-powered Waternest eco-home is nearly 100% recyclable

Floating solar-powered Waternest eco-home is nearly 100% recyclable | Design | Scoop.it

Architect Giancarlo Zema and EcoFloLife developed WaterNest 100, an ecological floating habitat.

The 1000-square-foot floating pod-shaped home measures 12 meters in diameter and 4 meters tall. Its curved body is constructed from recycled glued laminated timber and a recycled aluminum hull. The rounded wooden roof is topped by a 60-square-meter photovoltaic array capable of generating 4 kWp. Four skylights flank both sides of the photovoltaic array. Large windows and balconies wrap around the unit to allow users to enjoy views of the water.

Case Study: 21CIF Scoop.it Magazine

Case Study: 21CIF Scoop.it Magazine | Design | Scoop.it
Teaching Information Fluency describes the skills and dispositions of information fluency adept searchers. Readers will receive in-depth information on what it takes to locate, evaluate, and ethically use digital information. The book realistically examines the abilities of Internet searchers today in terms of their efficiency and effectiveness in finding online information, evaluating it and using it ethically. Since the majority of people develop these skills on their own, rather than being taught, the strategies they invent may suffice for simple searches, but for more complex tasks, such as those required by academic and professional work, the average person’s performance is adequate only about 50% of the time. The book is laid out in five parts: an introduction to the problem and how search engine improvements are not sufficient to be of real help, speculative searching, investigative searching, ethical use and applications of information fluency. The intent of the book is to provide readers ways to improve their performance as consumers of digital information and to help teachers devise useful ways to integrate information fluency instruction into their teaching, since deliberate instruction is needed to develop fluency. Since it is unlikely that dedicated class time will be available for such instruction, the approach taken embeds information fluency activities into classroom instruction in language arts, history and science. Numerous model lessons and resources are woven into the fabric of the text, including think-alouds, individual and group search challenges, discussions, assessments and curation, all targeted to Common Core State Standards as well as information fluency competencies.

Understanding curation by creating and using a Scoop.it magazine is one of the projects in EDUC 760: E-Learning for Educators.  Constructing knowledge by skillfully tagging, annotating, and sharing information is a way to filter and use the ocean of information we live and teach with. 8-)

The 21st century is challenging old notions of learning spaces

The 21st century is challenging old notions of learning spaces | Design | Scoop.it

Classrooms should be spaces that students don’t want to leave.  Some communities are still hesitant about these futuristic looking learning spaces and have resorted to older, traditional physical spaces. Hopefully, they will begin to embrace changes to better prepare students and move them in the 21st century global economy.

While I do not ascribe to everything mentioned in this post, there is much to commend it.

Schools and the learning spaces within them should be engaging and attractive places for children in which to learn. Outside of their home, school is where they spend a significant portion of their lives.

Small-Sized Nature Retreat Overlooking the Ocean: Moonlight Cabin in Australia

Small-Sized Nature Retreat Overlooking the Ocean: Moonlight Cabin in Australia | Design | Scoop.it

Overlooking the ocean in Victoria, Australia, the Moonlight Cabin by Jackson Clements Burrows Architects is said to engage with the landscape’s ephemeral conditions. Modest in size, the residence answers the living needs of the owners, while making use of sustainable features: “The built form is fully screened in a spotted-gum rain screen that acts like a ‘goretex jacket’ to protect the cabin from the elements while the timber is free to move naturally in the changing climatic conditions. Its small footprint shelter (60m2) explores the boundaries of how small is too small, challenging conventional notions of what is actually necessary in our lives”, the architects explained.

Mirror Houses by Peter Pichler Architecture | Bolzano, Italy

Mirror Houses by Peter Pichler Architecture | Bolzano, Italy | Design | Scoop.it

The true purpose of the twin houses is clear: stringent environmental regulations and a contemporary concern for comfort demand a plethora of mechanical and electrical equipment and a highly insulated envelope. But with a great glass sliding door opening each unit to the breeze, the houses offer their temporary residents a taste of something like Thoreau's rougher-hewn Walden cabin, whose simplicity and intimate scale fostered his sense of connection to the environment. In their outward appearance, the Mirror Houses do little to blend in with their surroundings—the opposite, in fact—but, from the inside, the building seems almost to disappear, registering only as a frame for the view. “There but not there,” one might say...

What's next? 3D printed buildings?! Amazing to see how far this technology has come in such a short space of time.

Farid Mheir's curator insight, September 28, 2014 7:27 PM

This is much inline with my readings on the zero marginal cost society. Being able to print your own car may not be practical of cost effective today but once it is and car 3D models are available free or low charge on the web, where will the car industry go? I understand why Tesla is building huge battery manufacturing plant as they may have seen that providing key components may be the future of the car industry?

Alexandre Armougom's curator insight, September 29, 2014 9:16 AM

Modular Prototypes for Flexible and Efficient Prefab Structures

Modular Prototypes for Flexible and Efficient Prefab Structures | Design | Scoop.it

The prototypes designed for DST Company for the CONCRETA 2003 Exhibition, intend to provide a multiplicity of solutions regarding its purpose. The development of a modular typology that could respond to specific ends such as of temporary housing, environmental observatory, fire outpost, bar, Kiosk, “virtual square” or to a minimum element that could gather the necessary conditions to communicate through IT systems was a priority.

The plan was to produce a module that could be repeated and associated almost endlessly, being at the same time functionally mutable and capable of providing urban conditions through associative forms of its base element.

Une solution aux problème de logement?

JMS1kiddz's curator insight, October 23, 2013 9:34 AM

The concept of Prefabs is no new idea, however these modern prototypes change the way one looks at prefabs. Prefabs are generally associated with being made out of some sort of iron material and are built for practicality rather than comfort. These prototypes are designed to manage energy and to work in favour of the land. Not only are they nice looking but they are also complimentary to the land.
