Turner Prize winner Susan Philipsz and sisters create ‘sound art’ for Pope - Scotland - Scotsman.com

Turner Prize winner Susan Philipsz and sisters create ‘sound art’ for Pope - Scotland - Scotsman.com | DESARTSONNANTS - CRÉATION SONORE ET ENVIRONNEMENT - ENVIRONMENTAL SOUND ART - PAYSAGES ET ECOLOGIE SONORE | Scoop.it
AS CHILDREN, artist Susan Philipsz and her sisters sang for Pope John Paul II during his 1982 visit to Scotland.

Thirty years on, an artwork created by Philipsz based on their performance is to be gifted to Pope Benedict XVI.

Philipsz, who grew up in Glasgow’s Maryhill and won the Turner Prize in 2010 for a piece of “sound art”, which featured her singing a Scottish folk song and was installed under three Glasgow bridges, has been invited to create a sound piece for Milan, which is hosting the World Meeting of Families later this month and which the Pope is to attend.

Installation environnementale sur le Pont Lafayette
Hans Peter Kuhn (Allemagne)

Walking the bridge is an opportunity to reflect on the city as a whole by acquiring a unique distance from it. You are no longer inside of the system but standing above it. In this way, the bridge can alter the visitor’s routinized relationship with the city.

Key design questions and concepts:

In what ways does sound impact your relationship with your immediate environment? How can an individual experience their normal environment in a profoundly new way?How do people experience a personal relationship with an object? How does sound define an object? How can sound desystematize environments and behaviors associated with them? The transformative properties of sound

Markus Kison - Touched Echo

Markus Kison - Touched Echo | DESARTSONNANTS - CRÉATION SONORE ET ENVIRONNEMENT - ENVIRONMENTAL SOUND ART - PAYSAGES ET ECOLOGIE SONORE | Scoop.it
For the exhibition Bilderschlachten, part of European Media Art Festival Osnabruck 2009, Markus Kison was invited to create an Osnabrück specific version of his work touched echo. The icons show the date of the first air raid on Osnabrück during World War II: 20.6.1940. Located on a bridge in the city centre of Osnabrück the public space installation is heading into the direction, where English B-25 bombers attacked from. In their role as a performer visitiors put themselves into the place of the people who shut their ears away from the noise of the explosions. While leaning on the balustrade the sound of airplanes and explosions is transmitted from the swinging balustrade through their arm directly into into the inner ear (bone conduction). Further information on the website of the Dresden version.

Touche echos - Markus Kison

Touche echos - Markus Kison | DESARTSONNANTS - CRÉATION SONORE ET ENVIRONNEMENT - ENVIRONMENTAL SOUND ART - PAYSAGES ET ECOLOGIE SONORE | Scoop.it
Desarts Sonnants's insight:

Exposé
Using bone conduction, a technology developed for hearing devices, the touch echo installation transmits sounds of the cities which were devastated in the 1945 carpet bombing in the Second World War, through the arms of the visitors when they rest their elbows on the balustrade and hold their ears closed. Several custom-made sound conductors mounted to the railing send sounds of airplanes and bombs exploding through vibrations; it is completely silent unless you touch the railing. The installation touched echo is a minimal media intervention set within a public space. The visitors of Brühl's Terrace in Dresden are taken back in time to the night of the terrible air raid which devastated their city February 13, 1945. In their role as performer, the visitor imagines themselves in the place of the Dresden inhabitants who must have closed their ears tightly in fear to shut out the horrendous noise of the explosions 65 years ago. When one leans on the balustrade the sound of airplanes and explosions is transmitted from the swinging balustrade through one’s arm directly into the inner ear. Awards/exhibitions/presentations

Developed in the Digital Media Class at the University of the Arts Berlin. Realised with thesponsorship award of Saxon Ministry of Science and the Fine Arts, with friendly support from the Trans-Media-Akademie Hellerau and Schlösser und Gärten Dresden, Geschäftsstelle Zwinger / Brühlsche Terrasse.

Floral Derrangement - Scanner - Robin Rimbaud

Floral Derrangement' is a public sound installation created specifically for BRASS 2011. Inspired by a recording of the popular piece of music 'The Floral Dance', performed by Brighouse and Rastrick Band in 1977, Scanner has replayed and stretched the song to 130 times its original length, adding new melodies, playing new brass parts in a fresh arrangement of a classic English folk tune.

The work was discretely installed on Kingsgate Bridge, Durham, UK for the Brass Durham International Festival 2011 and played from morning until night, surprising passers-by as well as colluding with local bird song and the cathedral bells regularly peeling out.

This languid, epic piece of music created harmonies that are stretched beyond comprehension with ethereal oceanic effect to produce a new digital interpretation of this popular tune.
