Out of Range, by Jana Winderen

"Out of Range" is an audio work based on ultrasound and echolocation used by bats, dolphins and other creatures who operate beyond the range of human hearing - 'seeing' with sound, or perhaps 'hearing' objects.

All sound is invisible; ultrasound is inaudible. Of course, many species have a greater range of hearing than us humans and also more specific and specialised with complex combinations of the different senses… Creatures on both land and under water produce and/or perceive very high sound frequencies. Some species of insects, birds, fish, and mammals can emit and hear ultrasound, used for communications, hunting and orientation. These creatures operate on a different level of perception to us, in an inaudible range above 20kHz...

Many animals also use the acoustic properties of a space; a bat for example can use the echo from a tower block wall to amplify their calls for mates in the autumn; a toadfish uses the shape of a cave to amplify their calls to protect their habitat. Whales use the different acoustic properties at different depths in the ocean at different pressure levels to send their long distance calls. An astonishing fact about moths is that they have a reflex action with their wings to shut down when they hear the bat echolocation calls… That we reckon that this is so astonishing says something about us….

The mix for the piece is based on ultrasound, hydrophone recordings below the water and also of echolocation sound within audible range. The recordings were made in various locations in Central Park and East River in New York, USA, a forest outside Kaliningrad in Russia, Regents Park in London, UK, and various locations in Madeira, Norway, Denmark and Sweden. The ultrasound is time-stretched to bring it into a frequency range audible for human beings.credits
released 06 April 2014

Recordings were made on a Pettersson Ultrasound Detector D1000X, Reson 4032 and DPA 8011 hydrophones and 4060 dpa microphones onto a Sound Devices 477T hard disk recorder.

The photographs mirror "the audible range" through a contrast between gateways, portals and sight lines, set against situations where the camera eye cannot make sense of the optical event it is confronted with.

Deutschlandradio Kultur, Redaktion Hörspiel / Klangkunst commissioned the piece for Elektroakustischer Salon: Art’s Birthday 2014, which was performed live at Berghain, Berlin, on Friday 17th January 2014. With thanks to Marcus Gammel.

Soundtrackcity » Sound – Track – City

Sound:
eye-opener

Sound art aims to make people listen more attentively to their surroundings. On a soundwalk this happens in a very direct way: a particular route is followed while listening to a recorded sound composition through headphones. But blind people are already very active and attentive listeners. What, then, is the added value of a soundwalk for them?

In everyday life we mostly pick up sound as signal, and this is particularly true of blind people. In contrast to their sighted counterparts, they are after all dependent on sound as their principal source of information. In the forum discussion after the soundwalk, the blind participants spoke of their pleasure in the beauty of the sounds heard through the headphones. Walking through the streets had gained an added dimension for them. Their customary, targeted ‘signal listening’ was replaced by relaxed spatial listening.

Sighted participants on the soundwalk Down by the Riverside experienced a similar response. For once, listening took precedence over seeing. And other senses such as touch and smell were activated by the mindful listening.
On the Amstel bridge a former bridgemaster recalled through the headphones how he used to operate the bridge by hand. I heard the grating sound of the bridge opening and suddenly I became aware that I was tracing the letters on the NIEUWE AMSTELBRUG nameplate with my fingers, like a blind person. And not only that. For the sighted participants, the relaxed attitude of spatial listening also had an effect on their way of seeing. Their customary, fragmented snap-shot way of seeing, aimed at instantly recording information, was transformed into a dreamy registration of the surroundings as a whole, with new, fresh eyes.

Another aspect of the soundwalk with headphones is that the world we hear differs from the actual surroundings. The sounds through the headphones of the sound walker is a conscious, site-specific composition created by the sound artist, an intervention in the normal aural experience of a specific environment. The walker experiences this virtual world as unequal to the actual world he is walking through, which he sees and also hears through the half-open headphones. He must strive to connect these two opposing sources of information by drawing on his imagination, ideas and memories. The result is a new experiential environment, one’s own newly-created personal city.

This experience is in stark contrast with the regular use of mobile media in the city. Increasingly people walk through the city’s streets wearing earplugs or headphones, locked in their own sound bubble of downloaded MP3s or a radio station. They experience this self-chosen soundtrack as their real surroundings. It fits them like a reassuring glove and the sound does nothing to prompt them to re-evaluate their urban environment.

MOVEMENT, MEMORY & THE SENSES IN SOUNDSCAPE STUDIES – Sensory Studies

Desarts Sonnants's insight:

INTRODUCTION & OBJECTIVES

This paper will explore how the practice of soundwalking can be a tool for memory retrieval. I ask: How are memories created and remembered in the mind and felt within the body? What happens to our perception of self, home, and knowing as we move through spaces and places of significance? I aim to explore the subject of memory and movement within the context of soundscape studies; these notions require an understanding of how we “hear” the past and re‐evoke our acoustic memories as we move and act through our environment. Traditional methods for recalling the past involve mainly visual cues and focus on materiality (Bäckman, Small, Wahlin & Larsson 2000) —we look to photographs and hold personal objects, etc.—while remaining visual‐centered and localized. I suggest that it is the physical act of moving our body through meaningful environments that unifies the senses, places and knowing and that brings together the local past into the present experience (Casey 1987). My main focus is to understand the ways in which people—both as individuals and as groups—remember and construct the past. This paper explores how the production of memory and act of remembering are evoked during the process of memory walks (or soundwalks) as a way of understanding and engaging with the world.
