Floral Derrangement - Scanner - Robin Rimbaud

Floral Derrangement' is a public sound installation created specifically for BRASS 2011. Inspired by a recording of the popular piece of music 'The Floral Dance', performed by Brighouse and Rastrick Band in 1977, Scanner has replayed and stretched the song to 130 times its original length, adding new melodies, playing new brass parts in a fresh arrangement of a classic English folk tune.

The work was discretely installed on Kingsgate Bridge, Durham, UK for the Brass Durham International Festival 2011 and played from morning until night, surprising passers-by as well as colluding with local bird song and the cathedral bells regularly peeling out.

This languid, epic piece of music created harmonies that are stretched beyond comprehension with ethereal oceanic effect to produce a new digital interpretation of this popular tune.

Installation environnementale sur le Pont Lafayette
Hans Peter Kuhn (Allemagne)

Walking the bridge is an opportunity to reflect on the city as a whole by acquiring a unique distance from it. You are no longer inside of the system but standing above it. In this way, the bridge can alter the visitor’s routinized relationship with the city.

Key design questions and concepts:

In what ways does sound impact your relationship with your immediate environment? How can an individual experience their normal environment in a profoundly new way?How do people experience a personal relationship with an object? How does sound define an object? How can sound desystematize environments and behaviors associated with them? The transformative properties of sound

Markus Kison - Touched Echo

Markus Kison - Touched Echo | DESARTSONNANTS - CRÉATION SONORE ET ENVIRONNEMENT - ENVIRONMENTAL SOUND ART - PAYSAGES ET ECOLOGIE SONORE | Scoop.it
For the exhibition Bilderschlachten, part of European Media Art Festival Osnabruck 2009, Markus Kison was invited to create an Osnabrück specific version of his work touched echo. The icons show the date of the first air raid on Osnabrück during World War II: 20.6.1940. Located on a bridge in the city centre of Osnabrück the public space installation is heading into the direction, where English B-25 bombers attacked from. In their role as a performer visitiors put themselves into the place of the people who shut their ears away from the noise of the explosions. While leaning on the balustrade the sound of airplanes and explosions is transmitted from the swinging balustrade through their arm directly into into the inner ear (bone conduction). Further information on the website of the Dresden version.

Under the Morrison Bridge

Here’s a video that Ed shot under the Morrison Bridge. None of the sound of the above video has been shifted in pitch – different vehicles traveling at different velocities make different sounds when driving over the bridges. Our project will generate real-time, live ‘music’ out of the sounds of the traffic moving across the Hawthorne Bridge – ranging from skateboards and footsteps to cars and trucks.

BRIDGE-MUSIC-TOWER-SIGN - Joseph Bertolozzi

BRIDGE-MUSIC-TOWER-SIGN - Joseph Bertolozzi | DESARTSONNANTS - CRÉATION SONORE ET ENVIRONNEMENT - ENVIRONMENTAL SOUND ART - PAYSAGES ET ECOLOGIE SONORE | Scoop.it

Launched during the 400th anniversary celebrations in 2009 of Henry Hudson’s voyage up the Hudson River, Bridge Music was created by recording the sounds of bridge’s surfaces (guard rails, girders, etc.) with various mallets and using those sounds to compose new works, making the Mid Hudson Bridge the largest percussion instrument in the world. These performances of the bridge’s sounds are what one hears at the Listening Stations and on the park radios. The music contains no other tones than those of the bridge itself.
