Derrida: A Biography by Benoît Peeters - review

Derrida: A Biography by Benoît Peeters - review | Derrida & Deconstruction in Education | Scoop.it

In May 1992, the dons of Cambridge University filed into their parliament to vote on whether to award an honorary degree to the French philosopher Jacques Derrida, founder of so-called deconstruction. Despite a deftly managed smear campaign by the opposition, Derrida's supporters carried the day. It would be interesting to know how many of those who tried to block him in the name of rigorous scholarship had read a single book of his, or even a couple of articles.

StellaB's insight:

Cool: Raymond Williams and Jacques Derrida talk in the empty hall at the end of the Linguistics of Writing Conference (Glasgow, 1986). They begin by reflecting on the recording of the event for television. Gradually their conversation widens to touch on topics including translation, the international flow and influence of publications and artistic movements, and the role of the English language and North American market in legitimizing academic ideas.

The conversation ends with Williams pointing to a need to examine one complex contemporary instance of such legitimation of ideas: what is commonly, and Williams says not always frivolously, denounced as a kind of Franco-American intellectual hegemony.
